Wallabies and Brumbies lock in Tom Banks on long-term deal

By News / Wire

Speedy Brumbies outside back Tom Banks has committed to Australian rugby for four more years in a boost for the Wallabies.

Banks, 24, announced he’d agreed to a contract to remain in Canberra until the end of 2022, hoping to build on a breakthrough campaign last year which led to rookie Test honours.

The Brisbane-born and raised flyer played three Tests off the bench, making two appearances against the All Blacks, including a debut at Eden Park.

It was just reward for a Super Rugby season in which he scored nine tries, the most by a Brumbies player since Stirling Mortlock hit the same mark in 2006.

Brumbies coach Dan McKellar said his 2018 back of the year had ample room to improve.

“He’s got very good natural instincts and, he sees space well. He works hard off the ball and wants to be in the game,” McKellar said.

“Tom’s talent, ability and vision are complimented by his genuine speed and these qualities make him an important player to us.”

Great to hear. He has serious gas....the length of the field try against the Waratahs last year, and the one against the Bulls in the republic showed that.

I couldn't agree more,if all blacks lost as many games as wallabies half way through the championships and the likes of Ione,Barrett,Read and whitelock played average they would have been dropped regardless of how they played previous years. So what happens in AUS! you can play every week and even get invited too a wallaby training camp in 2019,get rested in super rugby and have a guaranteed place in the RWC 2019 squad. all blacks have too perform constantly well and they know it, otherwise they could lose there spot. You can even use your playing time in the wallabies team too get match fit, players should be playing too get match fit at provincial level. The wallabies is the international team not a place for weakened standards.

Banks is the Fullback in Oz. He knows how to play fullback , he is seriously quick, is a committed defender, will turn and chase hard. So does DHP but he is just too slow. He can break the line but is too often caught from behind. Folau is very good some aspects of the position but poor at others. He rarely makes a try saving tackle, goood fullbacks often do. His strengths suit the wing. One on one 20 out and he scores most times. The Wallabies would be stronger in two positions if Banks was at the back. From Cheika he gets next to no game time is a very losing season. Our backline is too slow and to slow to react to beat the best teams. Beale not the guy. He is unpredictable in a way that the other Aussie backs don't seem to read well. Israel aside and he is protected in defence.

Good for Banks for sticking around, he would have been getting some amazing offers from overseas and when he is up against players who seem to have a mortgage on a Wallabies jersey irrespective of form, it would have been very tempting. I hope he gets to translate his obvious talent, commitment and belief into some serious international game time, he deserves it.

A back three with Banks, Morahan and Folau (if he can rediscover his 2017 form) would be excellent.

Yes Fionn There is something about this signing that lends a sense of security for the future. Maybe someone at head office is getting the picture. This is welcome news after the year of professional buck passing we have endured. This kid has Wallaby written all over him in a Latham/Roff type way.

Great signing. I still don't understand the hype about Mozza. A great try recently seems to have catapulted him into Wallaby thoughts (by some posters at least) . Interesting??

Banks is good and as the years go on he will become even better, heading towards RWC 2023 he will be a very important player for wallabies. Morahan is in his prime(the complete player)and is as good as anyone probably a more dangerous runner than Folau,he can kick with either foot which not many wallaby backs can do,but what stands out most is his ability too create space for teammates.

Good stuff, potentially a very good international player. Very quick, tough enough and tackles well enough, kicks and catches well. Could be a wing at international level It'd be nice to get Morahan back.

Indeed it bodes well, here's hoping he not only gets a decent chance with the WBs but that he is also USED effectively by the WBs - that always seems to be a big "IF" these days ...

Interesting to hear, and bodes well for the Brumbies. Hope he gets the chances that he deserves at the international level.
