Karmichael Hunt signs with Waratahs for 2019

By Scott Pryde / Expert

Karmichael Hunt has officially made the move to the NSW Waratahs for the 2019 Super Rugby season in a player swap deal.

The utility back went unused at the Reds last year after falling out of favour with coach Brad Thorn, who took a hardline stance in response to his issues off the field.

Instead of playing in Super Rugby, he was forced to play NRC and club rugby in Queensland.

The player swap with the Waratahs will see another utility back in Bryce Hegarty make the trip north to play for the Reds during the 2019 season.

Hunt has won the trust of Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson and will likely prove an important cog in the Waratahs backline this year, given he can play everywhere from 10 to 15.

Gibson said in a press release that the decision was not one the club have taken lightly.

“Today we welcome Karmichael to the NSW Waratahs team,” said Gibson.

“We acknowledge the off-field issues that Karmichael has faced in the past and today’s decision is one that as a team and a business, we have not taken lightly.

“We have made an informed decision after completing a thorough process by not only speaking with Karmichael, but also his family, his team mates and broader support network, as well as consulting our own staff, board, players, and extended support team.

“Karmichael has been very open and genuine with us about his off-field issues and his desire to turn things around, not only professionally but personally.”

Gibson also hinted at wanting to rotate players more throughout 2019 to ensure fatigue levels were managed more effectively.

“One of the findings out of 2018 season review is that we played our best players too much. Our strategy was we needed to improve the depth of our squad and Karmichael helps us with that,” said Gibson.

“I was pleased with what we saw from him throughout the NRC from both his attack and defence.”

This is the first big move since Rugby Australia announced they would aim for increased cooperation across Super Rugby clubs to ensure resources were being used correctly.

Hunt, by only playing club rugby and NRC last season, had his salary go to waste, and it’s understood Rugby Australia were keen to not let that happen again.

The back said he was thankful for the opportunity.

“The NSW Waratahs is a team steeped in history. They were one game away from making the final last year and have winning aspirations, I can’t wait to get back in to it,” said Hunt.

“It means a lot me that Daryl and the Waratahs have decided to give me another go, I’m ready to take this opportunity with both hands. Myself, my family and my friends are all excited for the Super Rugby season ahead.

“I’m always the first to admit that I’ve made mistakes. But the time away from the sport has been the most important thing that has happened to me.”

The Waratahs will play their first game of the new season against the Hurricanes on Saturday, February 16, while Hunt’s first game against the Reds will be in Round 4 at the SCG.

Hardly a rant, you don’t last 15 seasons as a professional because your selfish and not a team player. Try again. I’ll tell you what selfish is - “if you have issues sort them or go away until you can sort them” - notice you didn’t mention who to turn to for help, oh wait providing no guidance is being personally responsible. Real tough. Behaviour code only applies when you get caught. Angels, every player is an ethical angels, yea right.

I got the feeling last year that Scott-Young was ahead of Korczyk in Thorn’s pecking order. Add Smith, BPA and Tupou up front and the starting XV looks strong

The thing about Thorn's approach is he appears to have discarded the following players pretty quickly: 1. Quade Cooper 2. Nick Frisby 3. Marcus Vanzati 4. Karmichael Hunt 5. James Slipper 6. Reece Hewatt 7. Andrew Ready 8. Sef Fa'agase In addition to 9. Perese quickly wanting out. The fact is there's a finite amount of players out there. There's a smaller amount willing to stay in Australia. There's then a smaller amount again that are off-contract and available. And when players are bailing out, how many are going to want in? It's the sort of thing that works when your the Brisbane Broncos in the 1990s. Doubtful it will work at the QLD Reds in the 2010s though.

I am in two minds about Thorn and his zero tolerance (seemingly of anything he deems inappropriate). Slipper, Hunt and Cooper all seem to have been harshly treated. Thorn's raw, uncompromising ambition to fashion the team and culture he wants is impressive. And his kiwi awesomeness too of course???? On the other hand, his flinty, unyielding punitiveness towards perceived transgressors seems like some kind of old testament fundamentalism which is lacking humanity or compassion. I would love to see the Thorn discards, incuding Hunt, show that they were deserving of a second chance. Preferably against the Reds.

By all accounts he was punted for "off field" issues

Mate, that Reece Hewatt cannot get a gig is really disappointing. I guess he has had a lot of injuries and his size goes against him. Watched him closely for Norths last year and he is a bloody beauty and a class fellow too. Ended up Captain at age 20. I would have hoped the Reds persisted there til he at least turned 23. I think he's got something overseas now.

IF Hunt can stay out of trouble he's a good swap for Hegarty imo. Big IF though and a risky one. When fit and behaving Hunt offers lots as a player including mongrel and determination. Things the wimpy Tahs don't posses currently.

By being charged with a crime that was later dropped, that's putting himself ahead of the team? He's not a repeat offender - As he was not shown to have offended a second time.

Do they know this or that? Irrelevant like the rest of your rant - its called personal responsibility fella. You want to play in the big time then each individual in the team subscribes to a code of behaviour. You are made aware that the team is what its all about - if you have issues sort them or go away until you can sort them. This is a pro rugby team not a baby sitting service for self centered morons. And I would not accept your garantee that the sea was salty.

Your argument and presumption of Thorn’s reasons is flawed as the Tahs due diligence report shows otherwise. Hunt claims he was tangled in a complex mental war with himself, does Brad Thorn know this? Does his team mates know this? No. Brad Thorn is triggered by 3rd party reports to which he had no experience on how to handle the narrative however succumb to the theory he’s a liar. I guarantee you in 99.9% of cases similar to Hunt’s alcohol trades as the redeemer of all things to which drugs is just mere servant offering a dead out.

There seems to be an emphasis from some here on the technical issues of Hunts drug offense. You can write it up to make it seem like a coherant argument - but it is all irrelevant. That is not why he was dropped by Thorn. He was dropped for making decisions that put himself ahead of the team - thats it. The exact nature of those decisions and the actions from other agencies don't concern Thorn - the nature of his RUGBY offense is that he placed his own desires above the good of the team - and in our game thats death - so he's gone and as a repeat offender he stays gone. I only hope Gibbo will be as strong with him should history repeat.

So the legal action occurred after he signed for the Reds? Ergo, did not see "plenty of legal action when he was at the Suns". Thanks.

Where as Slipper was immediately discarded after he was found to have erred. Frisby and Vanzati not even given a chance under Thorn. Hunt getting in trouble again, was found to be possession of prescription medication.

Are you at all aware there is a middle ground between “my way or the highway” and no discipline and players doing whatever they like, right? Yes I am 100% aware of the middle ground....That is why I questioned your "my way or the highway" statement. He is a very diciplined coach from what i see but definately not a dictator as your "my way" statements would infer. Hunt had been a reformed person since his 2015 incident and Thorn backed him in 2018...thats 3 clean years which Thorn trusted that Hunt had changed ( grown up ) but hunt got in trouble again...so Thorn could no longer back him

From the Tahs press conference Hunt claims he had to initiate a meeting almost a year after the incident to that he mentions Thorn alluded he won’t be in his plans - that right there smells of arrogance and ignorance from a head coach. The Fact Tahs conducted thorough due diligence makes Thorn look like a puppet and his way the only way. If the Tahs assessment of Hunt achieves the goals of both organisation & player then I would say a reformed Hunt would make a far better coach than Thorn. Why? Experience, Dialogue, temperament, objective, negotiation and understanding across a plethora of social and athletic levels. A Sanctimonious chest beating strong hand Thorn will eventually lose momentum.

Drug: a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body What evidence do you have that alcohol is not as addictive as illegal substances?
