Jets, City fuming at VAR calls in A-League

By News / Wire

Newcastle Jets coach Ernie Merrick reckons the VAR has lost its bite after watching two crucial incidents go unpunished in 2-0 loss to Perth Glory.

The VAR was called into action when a Ronald Vargas thunderbolt cannoned into the arm of Glory defender Matthew Spiranovic in the 82nd minute on Sunday.

Replays showed Spiranovic kept his arm tucked in as he turned his body to protect himself, with the VAR deciding no penalty should be awarded despite the ball touching the player’s lower arm.

But the incident that really got Merrick’s blood boiling was when striker Roy O’Donovan was bundled over by Glory defender Shane Lowry in the 70th minute.

That incident wasn’t officially reviewed by the VAR, and Merrick wasn’t happy after the match.

“The guy in the VAR was having a cup of tea. He didn’t have a chance to look at it. He probably fell asleep,” Merrick said.

“With the handball, it just depends which referee you’ve got. Some give, some don’t.

“If it was against us, it would be given. We’ve had four penalties against, and we haven’t got a penalty this year.

“But the Roy O’Donovan one – he was wrestled to the ground, pretty blatant.

“I don’t know who looked at it. I think the guy in the VAR doesn’t really change any decisions nowadays. They’ve gone from one extreme to another.”

Merrick wasn’t the only person upset with the VAR over the weekend.

Melbourne City coach Warren Joyce was left angry that a Phoenix player wasn’t flagged offside in the lead-up to David Williams’ fifth-minute goal in Wellington’s 1-0 win.

Joyce was stunned the goal wasn’t overturned by the VAR.

Adelaide also had a gripe with the VAR over an incident in which the video review system upheld a decision not to award a penalty for a handball.

The busy January period is now over for A-League sides, but the jostle for spots is just heating up.

Glory boosted their lead at the top of the table to four points with their convincing win over Newcastle.

Victory moved into second spot with their 2-1 win over Sydney, while fourth-placed Melbourne City are now just one point clear of both Adelaide and Wellington following their loss to the Phoenix.

The seventh-placed Jets are 11 points adrift of sixth spot, and Merrick acknowledges his side face a huge battle to get back into the finals picture.

Obviously you don't follow the EPL through fan sites. The criticism of refs there is the same as here - exactly the same: inconsistent, ego-driven, favours the top clubs, etc. No difference at all.

I agree but my point was that the refs dont see themselves as the star of the show like our clowns seem to think

The EPL is in meltdown over refereeing standards there. We are definitely not alone

as I say, I saw a replay that did, but then it was taken off air. If he was offside, and it appeared he was by a far bit, play should have stopped then.

Anc the first thing that should include is dissolution of contracted refs in the A-league. Purely performance based promotion and relegation assesed by an independent team.

Afternoon All I really hate to say this but it's at a point where you have to question as to whether or not instructions have been given to the refs from the FFA! Surely at this level such incmpetence, amateurism and stupidity cannot be permitted. I have said it before and I will say it again, the best refs e.g in the EPL are almost invisible. Apparently Jarred Gillett has achieved qualification in the U.K. He might have been permitted to officiate in accordance with the status quo here but i do believe that if he continues the same level of performance in the U.K the ramifications will be a tad different. I am fast losing faith in our beautiful game when the FFA remains aloof to the Owners, the Managers the players and the people. To not address the rferees situation is to completely disrespect the game and the people.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with what I said and furthermore not only did the replays not actually show where Krishna was the moment the pass was hit, he layed the ball off for someone else to cross.

I haven’t seen the decision yesterday , but most jets fans said it wasn’t a penalty anyhow. But the jets had 3 penalties not given in one game against Mrlbourne city , plus 2 other howlers , which were identical to penalties that same referee had given to other teams , the jets got lucky only once against ccm when they scored an offside goal. The bottom 4 teams this year have been slaughtered by bad decisions, but in no way saying that any of those teams would be higher on the ladder, but they are definitely getting the worst decisions . The worst decision in football history was the var a league grand final glitch .. so Ernie Merrick has every right to not trust the var . If you read Ben Wilson referee reports each week , there are lots of admissions of mistakes from the var occurring . It’s just not working ..

So the lesson in this Get rid of the var ? Or give each team only 2 reviews ( var challenges ) per game as seems to work well in Nfl and cricket .

So true waz. Breathtaking incompetence from the var . And incredibly no one in the var box decided to we better not rule this a goal until we get the actual vision back . Technology has no place during game time .

Consistency is sadly lacking with our refs, on field and VAR. Handball in particular seems to be pretty random, and offsides. Some refs blow the whistle at the faintest of touches and others let pushes go. I watched Honda a few weeks back push Roar players down all over Suncorp and not be fouled, until about his sixth push, but still no card. Having watched a visiting Japanese ref let pushes go, I concluded that our Ausy ref must have thought it was ok for Japanese players to push opponents over. I think our refs need to come under closer scrutiny. There are some, and notably mostly out of the QLD NPL, that stand out above the others. But they should all be the same shouldn’t they? How do the refs standardise? and discipline or reward performance? I know when MV or SFC make a noise about a ref decision we’ve often heard an apology from the head ref, but what about the rest of us? Newcastle in particular have had some howlers, so what are they doing about it. Interesting, in England at a Championship match recently I noticed that they don’t do live replays of all goals or ref calls, just as they don’t at ACL matches. That’s one way to shut down the live crowd, but it’s hardly going to improve referring standards.

I'm pretty sure I saw a replay of Krishna standing about two metres off side and crossing for the David Williams goal. It hasn't been played much, most replays starting after his cross, but it looked like a clanger to me.

Yes, very valid point. I'm fuming about Azizi being offside when he assisted Iran's first goal at the MCG in November 1997.

Merrick takes the cake in this instance. He lost by two goals not one. Neither was a penalty. The handball in particular was a real long shot call. Its really shows the problem is whining blind coaches and supporters and their media buddies who listen to them. Two correct decisions and we have an article about how bad the refereeing was. The real lack of standard is with the coaches, media and the questionable supporters who commentate on them here.

Agreed. IMO there’s a chance to push the reset button on this, suspend its use from the end of the season and revisit the entire refereeing situation with a root n branch overhaul required.

Given that everyone was fuming about decisions pre VAR, and they're fuming about them with VAR, can't we accept that decisions aren't black and white? It's not tennis. In anticipation of people claiming it's an A-league problem and makes a mockery of Australian football, EPL managers are fuming about the appalling state of refereeing (no VAR in the EPL), while those countries in Europe who are trialling VAR are fuming about it....

Why stop at Jets and City? Roar are fuming at WSWs first goal which is clearly offside and there’s even debate as to whether VAR even looked at it?
