Dylan Napa has 'no idea' how videos were leaked

By Melissa Woods / Wire

Star Canterbury recruit Dylan Napa says he has no idea how explicit videos involving him were made public as he awaits any penalty from the NRL.

League boss Todd Greenberg has flagged sanctions for the Queensland forward for the two videos, which were recorded five years ago but uploaded to the internet last month.

Fronting the media for the first time since their release, on Wednesday, Napa said he was unable to comment on the videos as the investigation by the NRL integrity unit was continuing.

However he said he didn’t lose his phone, as speculated, and had no idea who leaked the lewd material.

The 26-year-old said he was “embarrassed” by the videos and was nervous about fronting his 92-year-old grandmother after their release.
He said his family and the Bulldogs had been nothing but supportive during some “dark days”.

“I’ve had some days which were weren’t so pleasant but lucky I’ve had plenty of support from my family and also my Bulldogs family here.
“There was some dark days.”

Napa said while he wished it wasn’t him, he hoped the experience could be a warning for other young league players.

“It’s not the ideal situation but if it means it helps another one of the boys or someone else playing professional sport not to make the same mistake, that will be a good outcome.”

Napa said he arrived at the Bulldogs from the Sydney Roosters intent on being a leader among less experienced players but the videos had damaged that.

“I obviously wanted to set good examples and be a good role model for the young squad and it didn’t go to plan,” he said.

“It all got flipped on its head when this happened so I’m just looking to put it all behind me so I can put all my energy and focus on football which is I came here for.”
He said he preferred the investigation was wrapped up as soon as possible.
“I don’t want to stand in front of these cameras again unless it’s something for a good thing, not something silly I did when I was 20.”

If Dylan Napa gets 6 weeks as predicted, even 2 weeks, is signs of a bureaucracy which has lost the plot. They talk tough on sexual aggression against woman, but take no action over the Souths Internet exposure which cost a player his marriage. They talk tough on being a responsible citizen, but write letters of support for a guy way over the limit, on a long drive with a car full of people. He has banned Ben Barba, but he was well known as far back as 10 years ago to be irresponsible with alcohol and gambling issues. Drugs came later. And now good ol' Todd is going to get tough with Napa. Napa is not the 1st and certainly won't be the last to have their actions recorded having a sexual encounter, and a 3rd party put them up for all to see on the 'net. That all this happened 5 years ago doesn't seem to matter. Todd wants to punish someone for all the rubbish which has gone on over this latest off season. He can't touch Hayne or deBelin and others who are waiting court appearances, as the NRL got burnt with acting too hastily against Brett Stewart. But Todd's still burning, he wants to burn someone now. It seems Napa is the man, and the Bulldogs the club, to be scorched. It doesn't matter that the Bulldogs have already been scorched as payback, by a 3rd rate journalist and a daily newspaper, for the democratic changing of chairmen. Todd has blamed the Bulldogs for not doing a thorough investigation of him before signing him. They are not ASIO. They checked all the facts available and proceeded on due diligence. They did all and more than they had to. Now Todd wants to give Napa 6 weeks which will torpedo the Bulldogs opening rounds. Maybe someone should do due diligence on Todd Greenburg.

No argument from me Steve. The Bulldogs shouldn't be punished for this. This falls way outside the parameters of due diligence. If the Bulldogs are punished for something an individual did outside the game 5 years ago (an action which is debatable whether it is suspend able at all...) when he was a kid and has since played 100 first grade games for another club and a handful of Origin games, it would be a total joke. But discipline/punishment is not Greenberg's strong suit, so who knows what he will do. Maybe he will suspend Napa from playing for the Cook Islands again.... you just don't know with Toddels...

Yeah, I agree. There’s any number of cases like this you can put side by side and see how ridiculous they are. Player A was also over the limit 3-4 hours after getting behind the wheel. The NRL should have a giant punishment chocolate wheel and just give it a spin...just as fair and a bit more entertaining.

Napa is an idiot not a victim. The only victim here is the Bulldogs

Fair enough BA but when the Bulldogs complained to the NRL that they are being punished for something they had no involvement in the response was "Too bad....you should have done your due diligence before you signed him." How the hell is that fair to them. I mean if the Roosters supposedly had no idea then how are the Dogs to know People can rabbit on about how Napa is the victim (he isn't...he's just an idiot), but the only real innocent victim in all this is the Dogs. They could possibly lose a key marquis recruit for an indefinite period through no fault of there own. If I was a Dogs fan I'd be filthy.

So team meeting - and Travis Touma (or whoever) is wrapping it up - "... so please make sure you are all at the bus by 1:30pm Friday... oh and if any of you have ever made a sex tape, can you let me know"...… c'mon. Players, like other employees in other businesses are mates and they have non-work "Whats App" groups. I have no idea what is shared in my staff's whats app group. And as long as it isn't illegal or discriminatory, I am really not interested. need to register all personal videos that players take that may offend some viewers?

LOL, you want consistency. Played A gets caught speeding and over the limit and Todd gives him a character reference. Hardly a cleanskin, Player A previously had been charged with assaulting his girlfriend, and had to attend a court ordered anger management course as a result. Player B has consensual sex, its recorded by a 3rd party and released by another party without anybodys consent. Player B, although he is the victim here, will most likely be watching and not playing the first 6 weeks of the season

To find out if they knew about the existence of the video's of course....which I'm sure they did. It all happened under the Roosters watch so if they knew they should have informed the integrity commission. Any reasonable person would have to assume videos of that nature would surface one day....conveniently for the Roosters it happened after the players left the club. Not suspicious at all lol.

My only question about this whole big Papi episode is why the hell the Roosters aren't being investigated to find out what they knew. I find it hard to believe no one was aware of this in management. Seems like they are untouchable

If Napa had no involvement in these videos being released and the police don't take any action its a bit rich of the NRL to hand down any penalty. What they are saying is they don't believe him. Heaven help any NRL official if he has any skeletons in their closet. This is purely grandstanding after the Barba incident.

Maybe if the players or persons who do the filming of these videos are involved in rugby league they should also be given the same penalty or fine as the accused player for their part in bringing the game into disrepute .

The better comparison - when looking at Souths, is the incident last season when players were accused of exposing themselves to a woman over the internet, which South Sydney then ignored until she went to the media. If only she had recorded it... But since she didn't, it never happened and the players are innocent right...? well expect for the whole thing where a players wife has now left him....

If the NRL wants to hold players accountable to higher standards of behaviour then I’ll back them...as long as there’s some modicum if consistency. I don’t necessarily have a problem with the game saying “it’s up to you if you make sex tapes, but if they get out in the public domain it’s your problem” If that’s the standard - great. As long as it’s consistent. But on recent results I can’t help but feel this is Greenberg grandstanding because there’s video footage. “We won’t tolerate this sort of behaviour in our game” Meanwhile the drunk drivers, the domestic abusers, the assaulters, the aggravated sexual assaulters get swept under the carpet as quickly as possible. No video, no investigation, no problem

The NRL has to be very careful here about the message it sends. People doing private acts that impact no one but themselves, I am looking at you bubbler boy, Mitch, Joel and the unnamed puppies, the Bulldogs private parts-grabbing party boys, and big Nappa. These are acts that when they leak are offensive to people's sensibilities, but no one was harmed, no one complained at the time and they involve a breach of the participants privacy. Are they really the worst things the NRL have to respond to? The panic responses to the above show the NRL are not able to grasp how they should police social media amplification of private events between consenting adults that have no approval to be made public. Whilst the players should know better, they are young (mostly) and stupidity that does not break a law is just stupidity not a criminal offence. The lack of action by the NRL against McGregor and Inglis after both were convicted for drunk driving, was depressing, these two people did something far worse and more dangerous than those above. It demonstrates the NRL responds to headlines not facts. It was an outrageous lack of response by them and demonstrates their "old school" mentality, drinking = OK a bit of a laugh..social media/youth culture bad and weird. CEOs caught with cocaine, players caught associating with bikie gangs who are known drug dealers, and crooked bookmakers going on the drink with players are also much more detrimental to the game than sex tapes, and drunken japes. Yet the league doesn't think so. Today. Maybe they will next week. Or next month depending on the "outrage meter". The NRL urgently need to develop some strata of offences that have a measured window of punishments that all participants are aware of. Something along the lines of: Grade 1 Off field private misdemenours that no one complains about till "made public", Grade 2 offences that are not criminal but offend "public sensibilities" (case studies may be required), Grade 3 offences that are illegal but don't cause harm or have the potential to cause harm to other people Grade 4 offences that are illegal and do cause harm to other people Grade 5 offences that are violent and yet to be tested in court, Grade 6 offences that question the integrity of the game ie gambling/drug use of club CEOs, club officials, coaches, players, or NRL staff Grade 7 offences that are violent and have been tested in court That would be a good starting point and put a lid on trumped up "bringing the game into disrepute" charges, which means nothing until the Tele gets a hold of a video, or makes up their own. C'mon Todd there are a lot of staff and consultants in the NRL these days surely you can make it work?

The only thing Napa is guilty of is stupidity. Stupid for the act and stupid for letting someone film. Its a bit rich on top of the Barbas expulsion but timing is everything. Greenberg has tried to come out and be the hard man and send a message which he is entitled to do but it goes to show someone is watching whether its NRL,media or someone who has a gripe against the player or the club.
