Quade Cooper called up to Wallabies squad camp

By Melissa Woods / Wire

Star Melbourne Rebels playmaker Quade Cooper has moved a step closer to a Wallabies World Cup recall with his inclusion in a squad camp after steering his new Super Rugby team to three straight wins.

Cooper has joined the Test contingent for a three-day camp in Sydney which will involve physical testing and meetings before jetting out to South Africa on Tuesday for two Rebels Super Rugby matches.

The five-eighth turned in another impressive performance in their Friday night win over the Brumbies to push his hopes for a Test return ahead of this year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan starting in September.

In a busy game he set up two important tries – finding Marika Koroibete to open the second half and then sending one soaring wide to young Wallabies winger Jack Maddocks for the 70th minute match-winner.

Cooper hasn’t played a Test since taking on Italy in Brisbane in 2017 and his international career appeared over last year when he was frozen out at the Reds.

But the move south to the Rebels to resume his stellar halves partnership with Will Genia has reignited his hopes of Wallabies return.

Genia said after the Brumbies match Cooper didn’t need to do anything different to impress Wallabies coach Michael Cheika but just needed to maintain his consistency and he would find his way back.

“Quade has been consistent over the first three games and I’m sure he will be hoping that carries on through the season and if he does there’s no reason why he can’t get an opportunity in a gold jersey,” Genia said.

Wallabies lock Adam Coleman failed a head injury assessment (HIA) during the second half of the Brumbies win but will travel to South Africa with their first match against the Lions in Johannesburg Sunday morning Australian time.

Your opinion never has been and never will be any clear evidence of anything other than your clear biases....Yet again you say you have clear evidence yet you show NOTHING....

geez they are names you never mention....yet you take every possible opportunity to have a go at Foley and run Foley down so I think you just proved how much you dislike Foley....You dont rate these other players but we never see you post about them...thanks so much for proving me correct.....You are aware of the lack of logic around your post? Making claims contradicted by all evidence and with no logic has not been an issue for you before, so why would it be now?

I have been reading the comments here about who dropped QC and why and my opinion is that all of you are disregarding history. From 2013 onwards QC had injury troubles and was out of form at both SR and Wallaby level. Foley was selected at 10 even though he had limitations because the cupboard was bare (CLL was sick and Toomua was also struggling with injury), and Beale as I recall was overweight (in 2015) and out of form. QC continued to struggle in a struggling Reds outfit and he did not look like he was enjoying his rugby. Eventually QC decided on a sojourn in Toulon. Meanwhile the cupboard was very bare for the Wallaby 10 position, where Foley was the default option. None of can be certain why Thorn decided not to select QC. What we do know is that Cheika did try to get QC back into SR. We do not know why QC declined. Now we are in 2019 and all that previous stuff is history. QC does seem to be enjoying his rugby and is playing well. Cheika has invited him back into the Wallaby set up. Things seem to be moving along nicely, so lets all shut up and watch developments without postulating on what we don't know.

Again, Jacko, you're mixing up personal feelings with analysis. I don't rate Wells as a test flanker either. I suppose I hate him too? And Henry Speight, a Brumby I don't think should be a Wallaby, I guess I hate him also? You are aware of the lack of logic around this claim? Mind you, making claims contradicted by all evidence and with no logic has not been an issue for you before, so why would it be now?

You sure showed me, Jacko. All I had were clear pieces of evidence against your claims, and lists of situations where you continued repeating untruths after being contradicted. But you? You on the other hand have no examples, and no evidence. Good try :)

Not sure who said it but 100% on Koroibete. He still plays like his running the ball on a 5th tackle in league and constantly throws it away. I like the guy, but still has a fair way to come, however will say I saw more glimpses of potential in him in the Rebels Brumbies game on Friday night than I’ve seen of him in any game. Hodge to take his spot for the 11 jersey. Really want to see Meakes at 12 especially with his defense. Not sure how Meakes and Foley will link up. Love the QC/Meakes combo at the moment. Also liking Kerevi. Starting to lose hope in Hooper and kinda feel like he is starting to lose a bit of confidence in himself.

good grief - going backwards is not going to take the Wallaby's forward. I would rather lose at the beginning of the RWC than prop up a flaky / ageing players career with another shot as wallabies playmaker. Wallaby's need to rebuild not try go back to the future - its just delaying the inevitable.

I dont care why you hate him.....I dont give a toss whether its personal or based on his rugby....You hate him and take every possible opportunity to run down his ability....the story behind your bias is not relevant...its just noise....Time you grew up

Wow having those ears would make you look very ugly....they are not good looking coaches......i dont make stuff up Fionn You are just so totally biased you cant accept the truth...You are a word arguer......You read a 500 word article and find 1 word to base your whole incorrect arguement on.....You repeat so many untruths you forget what you said the day before and your very clear biases are their for everyone to see..... You like making things up Fionn. You like speaking untruths and repeating them ad nauseam (like your Pocock paid sabbatical line that is total BS). I can’t but shake the feeling that you have no problem with being dishonest in order to try and win a discussion. It doesn’t reflect well.

As for the Bizzarre list well its made by people far more knowlegable about rugby than you will ever be but of course it doesnt say what YOU want it to does it...so you discredit it....Black Knight???? I do love liquorice and Black knight is a good brand

You know that for a fact, do you? You've got the ears of the three coaches that be said to have dropped him: Thorn, Deans and Cheika? Deans, in his biography, said that he dropped him as he wasn't taking the ball to the line anymore after his injury, but he was just starting to get that ability back by the end of 2013. Cheika said it was because he 'wasn't enjoying his rugby', and is now interested in him again. Thorn clearly dropped him for issues other than rugby. But Thorn has thus far shown himself to be a terrible coach. So, of the coaches that have coached Quade, the three that seem semi-competent: Deans, Link and Wessels all rated him and none dropped him for attitude. He was continued to play in France, despite you claiming that he was dropped. And you know what, Jacko? I've seen you go through this stuff before, and people to correct you on the facts, yet you still keep repeating them. You like making things up Jacko. You like speaking untruths and repeating them ad nauseam (like your Pocock paid sabbatical line that was untrue). I can't but shake the feeling that you have no problem with being dishonest in order to try and win a discussion. It doesn't reflect well.

not bad at all JB! I probably wouldn't have Marika at 11 though. He is too one dimensional for Test rugby IMO and loses the ball far too much in contact. Personally I'd put Hodge at 11. His best games in gold have been on the wing and we could use his booming boot in the forcing back contests that you regularly get in games. Other than that I see 12 as being a really hotly contested position. Between Meakes, Hunt and Kerevi there are 3 genuine options there. It's early days yet but I really like Meakes and Hunt as they do a lot of talking and organisation of the backline. Really helps the players inside and outside of them with awareness. Kerevi is a bit quiet but that's fine if you've got a good 10 and 13 around him.

Yeah damning stuff, he said didn’t want drugs around the team because he thinks it is bad for kids. What monster. Anyway, it doesn’t change the fact that none of us really know the reasoning, thoughts or feelings of the people involved, and it really a personal matter upon which we should mind our own business. That’s what I will be doing Charlie, if you want to continue making a spectacle of yourself with your petty little grievances against Thorn, good luck to you.

Speculation? Try this it's from your NZ new site https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/105474419/family-battle-shapes-former-all-black-brad-thorns-stance-on-drug-use Thorn sacked Cooper from the squad, fact! Your unfamiliarity with the term "give blood" indicates you've never had any meaningful contact with club rugby in Queensland and certainly not Brisbane. Your half smart reference to the Vietnam war was unnecessary.

CJ, It’s a small point and possibly a mute one but it needs to be made. There is a ‘novel’ idea floating around that “ it says something about Wessells about the rapid rise of QC.” Quade wasn’t born yesterday. And he didn’t start unlocking defences yesterday. The ‘rapid rise’ is as much the ‘rise’ through the selection lava that is the last 4 years of Australian rugby, and the ‘rise’ of awareness in rugby minds of the bleeding obvious. Having watched every minute possible of the kid’s play (and not just his missed tackles) I can say with confidence- he’s been rising for years.

That's amazing, Jacko, your "evidence" that Foley was better than Quade is that Foley won the comp more recently than Quade. Then, your evidence for Mac being better than Mounga is Mac being named in what was described as a 'bizarre' list, which included Bridge and Alamalo as the best wingers, Little and ALB as the best centres and Ioane as the best 8. You've done this because Mounga has led the Crusaders to two successive Super Rugby titles the last two years, while Mac has never done so. This logic was your entire logic for why you think Foley is better than Quade. You never cease to Jacko. Honestly, I think you'd make the Black Knight look meek by comparison.

The Un Zudders have been winning easily the last 4 years without Quade at 10. I do hope the Ull Blecks pick that little fella Mckenzie as reserve flyhalf, such a wondferful 10 he is. Look at how those Chiefs are dominating with him directing the play. Top of the table. Oh wait !

You are aware that that comment literally makes no sense? I'm not sure I've ever rated a club player higher than a super rugby player. See, you're at it again, Jacko, making the mistake of thinking that not rating Foley's rugby game has anything to do with my personal feelings about him as a player.
