Western Sydney don't need Barbarouses, they need defenders

By Jordan Klingsporn / Roar Guru

Aren’t Melbourne Victory stacked in attack?

Ola Toivonen, Keisuke Honda and James Troisi, with the first two of those being well known by football fans around the world and the latter known in Australia.

You’d think they would be destroying every team in the A-League when you compare them. Although one player probably doesn’t get enough recognition in that team.

Kosta Barbarouses.

If you go into the top goal scorers list for the A-League, most of them are players that have been getting a lot of coverage and recognition.

Adam Le Fondre on top, tied with Roy Krishna, Andy Keogh in third, tied with… Barbarouses?

I guess it would be hard for the New Zealander to get much credit due to the fact that he is playing alongside players who have played for AC Milan, Japan, Sweden and the Socceroos. But statistically, Barbarouses is under-rated.

Out of himself, Toivonen, Honda and Troisi, he has the most goals, he has the most minutes, he has the most successful crosses.

So if he is doing so well, why shouldn’t the Wanderers get him?

Well let’s have a look at some more facts. Currently the Wanderers are the club for Oriel Riera, Mitchell Duke and Kwame Yeboah, all of whom call themselves strikers. And it’s showing on the scoreboard too.

Believe it or not, the Wanderers have only scored one fewer goal than their rivals, Sydney FC.

And they’re in second place. Western Sydney have scored 38 goals, which is also more than fifth placed Adelaide United, and sixth placed Melbourne City.

Ten of the Wanderers’ 38 goals have came from star player Oriel Riera, while another seven have surprisingly come from Roly Bonevacia, who has caught interest from Perth in recent weeks.

The Wanderers did actually struggle a little bit getting the ball into the back of the net after scoring only 14 goals from the first 12 games of the season.

Consequently, they made the smart decision to bring in two more attacking players, being Mitchell Duke and Kwame Yeboah.

Duke and Yeboah to me are just another example players who had a great career in Australia, moved overseas, ruined their career, then came back home and restarted all over again.

Duke has scored four goals in the seven games so far, plus a pretty healthy crossing average of 23.1 per cent, mainly being contributed to by Markus Babbel playing him out on the wing.

So, with all of these attacking players, what does Babbel think he is doing?

Markus Babbel was a defender himself, he should know how to coach his defenders. So why are they leaking so many goals?

The Wanderers need defenders, and here a few options.

The first defender who would fit in well is Al-Qadsiah player Rhys Williams. He is currently a regular for his Saudi league club and is currently playing in a similar formation to what the Wanderers are.

Al-Qadsiah are alternating between formations a fair bit but most of them are similar to Babbel’s 4-2-3-1, as you have four at the back, two defensive midfielders plus a lone striker with no wingers.

Rhys Williams actually played 126 games for English club Middlesbrough from 2007 to 2016 and then came to his hometown to play for Perth Glory for a season, and then the Melbourne Victory for a season, before moving to Saudi Arabia.

The other important thing that they must do for the rebuild for next season is to lock up Brendan Hamill, who comes off contract at the end of the season.

Hamill is the only player in the Wanderers Centre-Back at the moment that is playing regularly, as Patrick Ziegler has been injured and has only snuck in six matches.

Hamill also has 31 more clearances at 124 and nine more blocks at 25, than Perth Glory defender Shane Lowry, who has arguably been the best Centre-Back for the ladder leading side.

The focus needs to be on where Babbel has his knowledge, in defence. Tony Popovic has shown this with Perth Glory this season, like Markus Babbel, Popovic was a defender.

He brought in Matthew Spiranovic, Tomislav Mrcela, Jason Davidson, and Ivan Franjic, and they have all been very successful for Perth and no doubt will have been influenced by their defensive-minded coach.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Kosta Barbarouses is a great player, and he would be a great asset to any side. But when you’re fifth in the league for goal scoring, and eighth in the league for goal concessions, I think it’s fair to say the Western Sydney Wanderers need to focus more on defence.

I completely agree - the Wanderers have plenty of talented attackers, and in the winter they need to focus a lot more on recruiting better defenders. That being said, the defenders all seem to be good individuals, they just aren't gluing together as a team. Nice job on becoming a Roar Guru, by the way!

He ranges from fantastic to NPL2. It's hard to watch as a WSW fan, some nights he can be so bad and yet the other night he sticks his boot out and stops a certain brisbane goal.

How many goals Barbarouses scored against Brisbane. I get the feeling Barbarouses will be going overseas again, MV have a big problem if he leaves because they are team full of play makers and Barbarouses is making all the runs. WSW can play well when they want to, others time what they are up to is a mystery. At the center of the mystery is the coach, why did he say he has the worst squad for starters. They are not the only team either, Brisbane seem to have the same issues. How many times have you seen these two teams and CCM under Mulvey play really listless one week and concede heaps then play much better the next.

I too was interested when Hamill named captain. I still think he is a great defender.

You are definitely not alone. As soon as I saw he was made club captain I stated publicly they were in for a very poor season. I wouldn't have him in the starting line up never mind club captain, or I believe what I said was that there were at least 8 A League sides where he wouldn’t be in he starting line up.

Am I alone in thinking Hamill is a key reason for WSW poor defensive showing? Stats don't tell the story, he lacks leadership, isn't particularly mobile and his reading of the game isn't great.

The days of the lazy forward who is only there to score goals are behind us and coaches are always searching for more hard working players clocking up the yards helping the team defend. It will be interesting to see what Babbel does in the off season with defenders as we do kind of believe that is his forte.

I read the article and made a short but positive comment in relation to KB which is there in plain view. You made a comment about his ability and your opinion of him and compared him directlyto other forwards. All Jordan said is that he feels he doesn’t get recognition in comparison to the others. Don’ttake it so personally, focus on KB, he is an asset to the A League and provides us with a lot of excitement and entertainment and sometimes leaves us feelng frustrated. I contend that it is due to the fact that the team plays to his strengths and therefore we are able to overlook perceived weaknesses.

barbarouses is a good player but maybe MB can help him with first touch and teach him to pass and layoff and make those runs because hes a dangerous player and he could tear it up at wsw. WSW already have there targets set out ive heard they have already signed 4 of 5 foreigners for next season so new team but only player i see staying is ABJ who is a quality 10

The writer has specifically introduced the comparison. Did you read the article, or just jump to contradict my comment without understanding the background to the comment?

Dropping Riera for Barbarouses would probably make a bit of sense.

Apples and Apples. He isn’t the same, not meant to be the same and is used in a very different but effective role. No different than comparing Kewell and Viduka when they were playing at Leeds.

To be honest, I think I would actually let Oriol Riera go. Despite scoring a few goals, he goes missing in games and a few of his goals are from the penalty spot (including some from rebounds). Duke, Yeboah, Baumjohann and Bonevacia seems like a good front four for next season. So perhaps a defender can help.

Kosta a reasonable player, he's nowhere near the level of Toivonen, or even Le Fondre. Kosta has extremely poor 1st touch for a professional and in attack the 1st touch is even more important to give you an edge. If he's facing the goal, Kosta becomes a threat. When he has his back to goal, Kosta is a liability because he regularly loses the ball immediately because he tries to turn & then dribble. If Kosta played to his strengths by laying the ball off & sprinting forward for the return pass, he'd tear defences apart every few minutes.

And plenty of positive recognition - at least by commentators and he even mended the goal net that broke last season!

Kosta Barbarouses has been the best player in the competition for a couple of seasons now imo.
