Israel Folau does not deserve the sack

By Will Knight / Expert

My favourites are the people that scoff in ridicule when asked if they believe in hell, and then proceed to become enraged over Israel Folau’s ‘Hell Awaits You’ social media posts.

It doesn’t seem to bother them that hell, in their view, is a mythical place. Put it down to the era of perennial offence.

People seem so keen to sniff out conflict in the form of being offended by something and someone, no matter how absurd. And Folau’s comments are absurd.

In the Instagram post, Folau stated that “hell awaits” drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters. The Wallabies and Waratahs back urged that “sinners” had time to “repent”.

Opinion: Israel Folau does not deserve the sack

Rightly, most gave the commentary what it deserved and that was to deride it as ridiculous and ignorant. However, some people’s argument that Folau wasn’t free to express his discriminatory views was wrong.

He’s entitled to freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

If Folau refused to pour someone a beer in a bar because they were gay, then that would be discrimination. But in this case, he was airing what was predominantly regarded as a foolish opinion.

His right to air it, though, should be respected.

It’s also important to note that Folau posting his views on social media that didn’t aim to incite violence or assault against any of the so-called ‘sinners’.

If he had fired up people to put a right hook on the next gay person they saw in the street or kick adulterers they know in the nuts, then that would be reprehensible. It’s a crucial distinction to make.

And while Folau’s right to freedom of speech should be respected, airing his views also comes with consequences given he represents a commercial entity – in this case, Rugby Australia.

As much as it’s laughable that many of those offended wouldn’t believe in hell anyway, there was an inference that homosexuals are in some way inferior.

His language was in bad taste, and it should be criticised, especially as Folau is popular and influential to younger fans.

But to sack him – and it was reported last night that RA boss Raelene Castle intends to do so “in the absence of compelling mitigating factors” – would be too heavy a punishment.

After his controversial “Gays to Hell” social media post a year ago, Folau deserved censure from Rugby Australia.

This time, he should cop a suspension.

He’s stuck his middle finger up at RA. Folau seems intent on testing whether in a World Cup year the national body – with the Wallabies struggling and the administration unconvincing in tough times – have got the courage and conviction to axe perhaps their biggest playing asset.

Folau needs to realise he’s representing RA and their imperative is to preserve their image.

Folau doesn’t seem like a malicious person, but he’s happy to air some rude and boorish views.

You know what would make an appropriate punishment? Give him some community service involving coaching a gay rugby team such as the Sydney-based Convicts.

Now there’s a project with the potential to produce a decent redemption story. That would be more meaningful than say a straight three-month ban, and more powerful than a sacking. What’s to say Folau’s eyes can’t be opened and he can change his views?

If RA are feeling the squeeze to sack Folau because of the pressure being applied by one of their major sponsors, Qantas, then that would be farcical. Qantas, both last year and yesterday, have publicly condemned Folau over his social media posts.

Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle speaks to media during a press conference on rugby player Israel Folau’s use of social media at Rugby Australia headquarters in Sydney, Friday, April 10, 2018. (AAP Image/Daniel Munoz)

“These comments are really disappointing and clearly don’t reflect the spirit of inclusion and diversity that we support,” a Qantas statement said yesterday.

Qantas said last year the company placed emphasis on “tolerance and inclusion”. As it’s been noted, this is a weak stance given its partnership with Emirates.

This is an airline owned by the government of Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates, where homosexuality is considered a crime punishable by penalties including imprisonment, chemical castration and even death. Inclusion, eh? Diversity and tolerance?

Until they can respond to why they have committed to an alliance with Emirates in such prompt fashion as they expressed their horror over Folau’s posts, then they should stand clear of any moral debates. The hypocrisy is stark.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Folau has thumbed his nose at Rugby Australia and some kind of punishment needs to be handed out over his insensitive and ignorant comments. But to sack him would be too harsh.

Some people are ravenous when they sense they can take a scalp. But let’s take a breath and remember he hasn’t been violent or incited others to be.

Actions speak louder than words. Send him to coach the Convicts for the next three months and let’s see what kind of decency towards homosexuals he’s capable of after that.

In the meantime, if his views are too abhorrent for you to cop on social media: unfollow him.

Israel Folau and anyone who promotes this racist religion that is trying to take over Australia deserves to lose their job and deserves to jailed for every. I will never bow to Israel religion which is a fraud upon the world. Jesus was a Palistien and he never judge people based on their sexual orientation that is only a Hardline Jewish religion crap that was spread over the middle east as part of take over off Noah land which is Canaanites who's Descendant are the Palistein people true owners of the stole land by the invaders now known as the Jews.

Just the sort of opening that a person with no substance to their argument will begin with. No one cares that he has bigoted outdated morals written by a people that regularly killed strangers by throwing rocks at them without any knowledge of what that person is there for. Great starting point for your "moral high ground" What matters is that he has been given the great privilege to play for his country, renumerated to a level that is obscene considering the take home of an average Aussie, Given a platform. Then breaks his contract, not once, but multiple times, and then has the audacity to beg for money from people far worse off than himself,. for 10 times the money required to fight his case ( that he could easily afford with the ridiculous salary he gets ) stating that he will use some of it to fight for 10 million dollars, more than double the value of his contract, in "damages" Its frankly obscene, greed was one of the 7 deadly sins, something he conveniently left out of his "post" His views are not that of any organised religion, he has his own belief system that picks and chooses who he wants to vilify leaving out the distasteful parts he doesn't stand behind, and adding in his own flavour where there is ambiguity.

Where has Israel directly said anything directly at some one. He hasn’t. You are all trying to be the martyr here, this is the only way you can feel complete by making yourself the target of nothing. Just grow up

I am not a usual poster,on social commentary. I will state this up front. I don’t think I have ever been as downright offended, or annoyed at any person in recent months, as I have been with this case. The final straw is electing to greedily take money from causes that are right and actually help people (like I’ll children), to make some pseudo-stand for free speech (not that he ever was denied this right) because though warned he was sacked for this. I am sorry - but I know in my job, if I were to spout certain things I would be sacked. You can hold these views (maybe I don’t believe in the liberal party. Maybe I don’t believe homosexuals will go to heaven. Maybe, I believe holocausts etc aren’t real) personally. But if I were to espouse them, while I have a right to do that, my employer should not be honour bound to keep me, should these not be in accord with THEIR values. Let’s be real people - he is not being thrown in jail like some people in other countries would be, so, though I disagree with him he is being afforded EVERY right. But, he does not and should not, be have to be paid for that. Frankly I think he is a tosser, and though I follow neither him or rugby in general, I do hope he will finish his 15 minutes of further fame, and fade back to the shadows where he and other troller towers (read: Milo Yiannopoulos) belong. I further think it is horrific that he would then try and gain financial advantage through his fame and some half-arsed claim his fight is because of freedom of speech, when really, it is about punishing those who he perceives did him harm. Again, I care less that his message is people who are drunks, gays, whatever go to hell and should repent. Assuming what he believes in relating to there being a god is true - THIS IS NOT HIS DECISION TO MAKE. To profit on the back of the actual poor, and to try and make this about religious brinksmanship is a form of vanity, and selfishness, the religion he speaks for would equally hope their own believed god would not judge. Repent now, Israel, before it is too late for YOUR soul.

It is sad that your author doesn't understand the implications of Folau's hate speech. Young gay men are a severely at risk group whose suicide rates, because of their lack of societal acceptance, are through the roof. Folau's comments are hate speech, not simply "rude and boorish", and this is the point. People do suffer as a result of his comments. I believe your writer needs to learn about suicide triggers and the issues relating to young gay people before writing on this issue again.

This article is dumb. He has the right to be religious, his right ended when he basically abused and told people that they are NOT valid members of society in a half-assed, meme, that partially quoted the bible. going to hell if they dont believe what he does, is to say the least " a tad outdated". He deserves the sack. So tired of people who cant thing for themselves, and think they can bomb the rest of us with some book thats out of date from thousands of years ago. This article has ignored the contact he signed to act a certain way in his job, hes not that special that he can do what the wants. Typical religious narcississt

But what if he is right? Having read the post it does not appear to be hate speech as he wants people to change to a standard he thinks is acceptable to God. He talks about love of Jesus. So his opinions may be wrong but appears to be sincere in not "Hating" those included on his list of "Sinners". What we really have here is a group of people who will not accept those who suggest Homosexuality is wrong. As was predicted in the Same Sex Marriage debate, they look at comments from people who they know oppose their point of view and then broadcast those comment to confect outrage at the comments. The purpose of this to shut down everyone who has a contrary point of view. They even "Outed" 2 AFL players who "liked" the comments. You would have to look through all those who had clicked on the "Like" button to do so. This is a determined attempt to close any opposition to their point of view. As a person who tries to look at all points of view before making a decision, I find the coverage and comments on his post very shallow and disappointing. How the Rugby Union policy of "Inclusion" can exclude a significant percentage of people with strong religious points of view is damning to say the least.

But he is sacked now. Your right, I don't think Hells a real place, nor do I think there is a God that wrote a book over 2000 years ago humans need to follow. But its down right out dated to say a whole list of most of society will go to hell unless they repent. Folau is an idiot. Rugby is a team sport, and his comments are taking away from that. Glad he was sacked, feel sorry for him now, but hes made his own bed. Nothing to do with free speech, or religious beliefs, its just religious waffle and its extreme.

It's the adulterers and drunks I'm worried about! In all seriousness this medieval hokey-poky nonsense about Hell is laughable and....completely irrelevant! If his employer, with whom he had just voluntarily signed a multi-year and multi-multi-dollar contract told him that as part of his contract he must not publicly condemn homosexuality or, for that matter, climb the roof of the Sidney Opera House at mid-day whilst naked and glistening in honey then he must abide by those terms. Plain and simple. Freedom of speech has nothing to do with this matter. It is not very surprising however that someone whose poor interpretations of the Gospel should have a selective and patchy understanding of his employment contract...

"Honestly do you seriously think a few later day so-called Greek experts are a match for the 2000 year unaltered view and scholasticism of the Church that delivered the texts" As a protestant I do place more value on the Word of God as reflected in scripture than the traditions of the church. The discoveries of the dead sea scrolls confirmed that scripture remained remarkable consistent over this period. However the claim that church tradition remained unaltered is a leap of faith, especially if you look at how the church changed their views and traditions on topics such as slavery, gender roles, divorce and racism over this period. In my view church views and traditions are open to re-interpretation and has changed significantly during the past 20 centuries, sometimes even for to better. My argument remains that the concept of sexuality as an innate part of personality was only defined in the past centuries as the science of psychoanalysis advanced. I therefore discount the claim that the church had homosexuality figured out 2,000 years ago, that the church traditional view was correct and also unaltered over this period. The bible was written by people within a context of that time but inspired by God. Modern scholars confirms this view as when they find differences in the meaning of words sas used in Ancient Greek literature to how church traditional interpreted the words in church tradition. As neither the Aramic, Ancient Greek nor Hebrew languages even had a word for homosexuality (not surprising as the concept was unknown to them) we need to dig deeper to understand the interpretation and translation if we find a word/concept that did not exist at that time appear in a modern biblical translations

Your Emirates argument has some pretty big holes in it. 1. It is a straw man argument, Just because the Dubai government is doing something we deem to be deplorable, doesn't make it right for an Australian citizen/resident to do the same. 2. Are there any Emirates representatives publicly asserting death to homosexuals? No? until then it is a false equivalency. 3. The inconvenient truth is that Folau is (was) an ambassador for Australian Rugby and Australia in general. He is (was) paid handsomely, and by all reports has contractually agreed to restrict speaking these views on a public forum. He is in breach. This is second offense. Kick him to the kurb and select a full service player in the #15 Jersey. As a thought experiment, what would be your views if Indigenous Auatralians were on his sinners list?

I agree but not because his actions are acceptable. They are not. However before we admonish Folau, can I suggest that he has said no more or done no more than probably hundreds of Ministers and Priests do every Sunday in their sermons! We just need to be careful of the hypocrisy here. Also we should remember that these religious convictions were indoctrinated in the islander people by christian zealots and missionaries who thought they were saving these people from being heathens! For myself I have no regard for any religion and simply see the different religions and the sects within many of them as instruments to control people through suppression and fear and allow one self interest group to dominate another. But lets be fair Izzy is following that doctrine and espousing what the "good book" told him. If you don't like it - fine but at least reserve some of your disdain and outrage for those that do it for a living and tell these lies every day from the pulpit, the press, and the internet!

Just Nuisance< Exactly correct as put! Folau was most certainly tempered by conditions as you say allowing him to freely express himself in the disgusting manner that he has. ~ But he has broken those conditions as set by the Australian Rugby by repeating pretty much what he was told not to! ~So they now have got that licence to sack him! ~ Why is he still on Rugby Australia Books? because the proviso after the last outburst of this disgusting diatribe of his was, ''that he keep his trap shut'' on anything of similar nature or you're history! ~ He is trying the Rugby Australia Board out to see if they are game enough to sack him, But! the original proviso to keep his trap shut has been dishonoured, so he is, or should be well and truly down the road! Aussie' Rugby weren't game to do it last time because they thought that he was the be all and end all of Australian Rugby, Holier than Thou in other words! ~ Player capability for retention of one player regardless, so he should not even be here since the previous episode, Aussie Rugby has no one but themselves to blame! ~ Good riddance to him for bringing the game into disrepute, and it should be understood that ""no one player is bigger that the game", and Israel Folau does not a 15 man game of rugby make!

He TOTALLY does have freedom of speech, he is not being Jailed! That doesn't mean you can say what you want in breach of what your high profile employer expects in the public eye. It is entirely his choice to speak out and he knows the consequences of doing so. He is happy to follow his God, so clearly God doesn't want him to play Rugby. So, See ya later!
