I think some sides get the rub of the green more than others though and some would even say certain referees are predisposed to refereeing certain sides in certain ways.
What I really want to know is how on earth a referee can be tapped on the shoulder during the game or at half time and told to referee in a different way. And who at NRL headquarters has the power to do this (as was strongly suggested occurred during Origin 3). That’s dangerous territory

Why NRL coaches need to pipe down on refereeing

Mary, whilst I appreciate the sentiment you are conveying you have drawn on two fairly poor examples to make your point.
The were three or four refeering errors against the Warriors that ultimately cost them the game. All four match officials have since been relegated. The RTS pass was not a 50/50 call – there is no evidence to suggest it was forward and in fact the replay would indicate that it wasn’t.
The Kalyn Pongia incident was not a shoulder charge nor was it intentional. There were several players competing for the ball in the end zone resulting in a accidental collision and injury to a player. The other Tigers player also contributed to the incident. Its an example where shoulder charge interpretations have gone too far – the real shoulder charges of concern are the SBW types that used to knock opponents into the next suburb or the like the Inglis on Dean Young incident.
It’s also a fallacious argument to suggest referees should be excused for costing a team a finals position as the players themselves also make mistakes or should of tried harder during the season.
Having said this I think referees have a tough job and are attacked too much but fans are entitled to complain obvious blunders or repetitive referring errors and inconsistencies.
I also find it extraordinary that a referee can be tapped on the shoulder at half time and told to referee the game differently as was strongly suggested occurred during Origin 3. This implies to me that someone at NRL headquarters has the ability to influence the outcome of live games which in itself is amazing.

"Ref's fault" culture ruining rugby league

I actually don’t believe Folau is a homophobe at all.
A phobia is an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. If you read the post in question he is imploring certain groups to repent or Hell awaits, however noting they are in fact loved and faith in Jesus will show them the way. Presumably he thinks he’s an help enlighten the path. This line of thinking appears to be in accordance with his religious believes. Folau was even the poster boy for a gay rugby tournament not that long ago. I’m not religious and don’t partake in this thinking but possibly Folau is simply misguided. He’s not a homophobe.

Giving to Israel Folau isn't patriotic, it's funding fanaticism

Understand your point. I don’t take that approach at all.
Difficult set of circumstances but I think having him run out every week with this over head isn’t going to be good for any party involved.
I do think the NRL had to take some measures given the number never or offseason problems.

Hit the road, Jack: Federal Court finds in favour of NRL

I’m pleased the nrl got this one right. The fall out had they not would of been astronomical.
The court has spoken and the rule stands and people now need to respect it.

Hit the road, Jack: Federal Court finds in favour of NRL

Don’t get me wrong I’m not suggesting nothing happened. It’s fairly clear there was heated dispute. Whether anything illegal occurred I don’t know.

I think the NRL have to have some rigour around how they proceed here and the best rigour is the process he’s just gone through.
I criticise the NRL regularly on a number of issues but I’ll give them a pass on this one.

Dylan Walker found not guilty, NRL issue statement

Yeah but they don’t their jobs in that scenario

Dylan Walker found not guilty, NRL issue statement

The magistrate concluded “”I simply, based on the evidence and Ms Ivkovic’s immediate retraction, could not be satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt of the guilt of Mr Walker,”.

His partners own mother and a case worker provided evidence in support of his defence that the fall in question was accidental.

Domestic disputes involving accusations of violence are notoriously difficult for the police and Courts to navigate. In this case the accusation was retracted very quickly. All parties involved in this one clearly want it in the rear view mirror.

I think the decision of the magistrate in this one should be respected and everyone should move on. There’s no basis for the NRL now to deny Walker the opportunity to continue to ply his trade.

Your comment that the NRL letting him back somehow makes the “violence against women” round a joke (I assume you mean Women in League round) is ridiculous. He’s been through the judicial process and been cleared. The NRL have no means nor the right to impart some other level of burden of proof he needs to satisfy. There are many good men in league who support the women in league round and I don’t think the Dylan Walker decision diminishes its value.

This feels like one that you should let go.

Dylan Walker found not guilty, NRL issue statement

Not quite. These days the Police and DPP are more inclined to just let cases like this go to Court and have the Court decide in order to save face if they had dropped it and end up looking wrong (for example if the accused reoffends). Function of the world we live in now.

Dylan Walker found not guilty, NRL issue statement

Yes perhaps warranted a charge in the first instance. A charge doesn’t mean a case necessarily proceeds to Court however. The DPP determines whether to proceed based on the evidence presented. When she recanted (which happened pretty quickly) then in the absence of other evidence to the contrary the case became fairly week in my view.

Dylan Walker found not guilty, NRL issue statement

The evidence was weak and his partner recanted her statement and said it never happened.
Even the case officer admitted the circumstance in which she fell may have been an accident.
Should never have gone to Court.

Mary these sorts of articles are pathetic.

Way to follow the outrage crowd and make an issue out of something so innocuous.

Your comments about women’s game being miles ahead due to the number who identify as LGBTIQ are absurd. You do realise that it because they in fact represent is a significantly higher proportion of participants in women’s sports then men’s sports don’t you ? There are no massive scale cover ups here in men’s sport.

James Faulkner's gaffe demonstrated a lack of awareness

The salary cap in its current form doesn’t work. Putting aside the fact that many clubs mismanage the cap it is completely punitive to the realities of the game (and the realities of life).

Are three NRL teams enough to make a decent finals series?

Agree with the sentiment of the article and the need to take more games to regional areas.
The big problem is ANZ stadium subsidise/rebate the clubs to play there to the tune of $100k per game. The clubs in isolation can’t afford to turn this down. I hate ANZ Stadium as do most fans. The NRL needs to find a solution to this problem to move the dial.
I don’t think the NRL care about crowds tho as the TV rights deal drives their behaviour.

Stand by your fans: Every club should take the country road

Probably a clumsy/silly thing for Faulkner to do but nothing more. I doubt he was I’ll intended. The media and a bunch of self righteous commentators latched onto this without confirming the facts and have blown it into the situation it is now.

Don’t forget Remis Smith

The Cowboys need to start planning for 2020

I think it just comes down to injuries. Theyve shown more than enough to suggest they should avoid the spoon with their best side available. Really need Napa back quickly and hopefully they get a good run with a fit Foran mid to late season.

The Bulldogs won't be wooden spoon winners

Hard to imagine KP agreeing to terms past his current contract

I'm losing faith in Nathan Brown

You should stand down as an editor for this rubbish. Or otherwise be stood down.

Israel, please shut up about God – oh, and happy Easter!

Agree – people who claim diversity and inclusiveness really mean conformity and exclusion. Conform to their views or else…

Israel, please shut up about God – oh, and happy Easter!

One of the most pathetic pieces of rubbish I’ve ever read on this site.

Agree Mary, those particular comments from his lawyers were embarrassing. I cringed reading them. Not sure why they felt they needed to throw that in as by all reports his lawyers were carving up the NRL and Greenberg was made to look like the idiot he is.

'He wasn't educated': De Belin's lawyers play the blame game

Beattie and Greenberg are the biggest threats to the game of rugby league – by a fair margin as well.
Incompetence never ceases to amaze.

'It's Mabo. It's the vibe': The NRL's Federal Court defence

“He went out on the sauce for more than 12 hours on a pub crawl, picked up a random, drunk 19 year old, took her back to his cousins empty apartment with a team mate before having group sex that may or may not have been gang rape, while his unknowing, pregnant fiancé was at home asleep.”

Careful – not sure the group sex part has been conceded yet.

Challenging Storm isn’t the issue. The Dogs had a recipe for beating Storm and but got unlucky with Napa going off early, some of the decisions and that final missed conversion. The other sides Storm have beaten aren’t exactly going well (except Canberra).
Roosters still the yardstick

Can Canberra be Melbourne's biggest challenger in 2019?
