Greg Inglis announces immediate retirement from NRL

By The Roar / Editor

South Sydney Rabbitohs captain Greg Inglis has announced his immediate retirement from the NRL at a press conference on Monday morning.

Inglis, who was formerly going to play until the end of the 2020 NRL season, has been having shoulder problems this season and hasn’t taken the field since Round 2 when the South Sydney Rabbitohs beat the St George Illawarra Dragons.

It’s understood Inglis has barely been able to lift his arm above shoulder height in recent weeks and will continue to work with the club in an off-field capacity over the coming years.

Inglis, while clearly emotional, said it was the right time and recognised the career he had.

“What a career,” said Inglis.

“I think it’s time and it’s the right decision for myself. I’ve been contemplating it for a while. My body hasn’t given up on me, but it’s the right time to retire.”

It has recently been revealed that the 32-year-old has been struggling with arthritis in his shoulder, a condition that can’t be resolved through medical intervention.

“It flares up and it goes from bad to good to worse. (It’s) unpredictable, all over the shop with it,” said Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett.

“At the moment he can’t raise it above his head or a little away from his body as he tries to raise it. The signs aren’t good.

“Surgery won’t fix it. That’s the issue.”

Inglis, who was contracted until the end of the 2020 season, will reportedly sacrifice more than $1.5 million on his contract to prevent his club bearing the salary cap burden.

Inglis began his career with the Melbourne Storm and was a part of the side that won two grand finals in 2007 and 2009 only to later have them stripped due to salary cap breaches.

He moved to the South Sydney Rabbitohs at the end of the 2010 season and has since played 146 matches for the cardinal and myrtle, for a total of 263 career games.

Inglis was part of the 2014 drought-breaking Rabbitohs premiership side and became captain of the club ahead of the 2016 season.

He has also made 32 appearances for the Queensland Maroons, part of a golden era that saw him take part in no less than 11 winning series, and captained the side in 2018.

Inglis was also capped 38 times at international level and was part of Australia’s 2013 World Cup winning side.

I've always found it funny NSW supporters are so keen to claim him all the time. We all know he's from NSW... the fact that he chose to play for QLD instead is pretty telling!

Reggie, you really are struggling. Only you could interpret 1.8 million over three years as 1.8 million per year for three years. I hope your job doesn't involve maths or money. Seeing as you're so obsessed with the matter, why don't you write an article on how the Roosters were not cap compliant in 2013. That would be a more appropriate place to discuss the matter rather than clogging up every second thread on this forum.

Did you send your butler to take your maths exams db? That figure does not suggest for a minute that Inglis was getting $1.8 mill a season but rather it is distributed over 3 seasons. $1.8 mill divided by 3 equals $600K. That figure is way off. It's more likely that he was getting $1.8 mill over 2 seasons, or $900K a season on the cap. I believe GI and Sam are both on $1.25 mill INCLUSIVE of TPAs (about $800K on the salary cap). Clubs don't always divide a 3 year payment evenly across the length of a contract that. Sometimes they like to play "Show me the money Nicky" as they did with Angus Crichton and dangle a $1 mill carrot in front of a young player to drag them from a club that developed them and gave them an opportunity. In Angus's case the Roosters are paying him $2.7 mill over 3 seasons or $1 mill for 2019 and $850K a season for 2020 and 2021. Btw, how is that signing working out for the Roosters db? Souths developed the kid into a starting back rower who represented NSW in origin and was in the frame for an Australian jersey while the Roosters have turned young Angus into a bench player that struggles to get 40 mins a game and will be among the first of the incumbents overlooked for origin. Bravo! Well done Roosters.

Reggie, you lost this debate long ago by just making up figures. The bleatings of supporters on forums doesn't constitute evidence. Next thing you will telling us that global warming isn't real because you mate Allan Jones says so. You obfuscate every time you're caught out telling porkies. Seriously, a person possessing any capacity for logical reasoning can look at the Roosters 2013 squad and determine there was no need to cheat the salary cap.

I think you'll find that the Rabbitohs have well over 15,000 more members than the Roosters Steve. It is well known that more than half the Roosters memberships are sold to corporate sponsors, former players and coaches now in broadcasting (and their families) and to Nick Politis to raffle off at his car yard. This fact is supported by the crowd average of around 7,000 that attend the Roosters home games while only half that number are prepared to travel away from the comfort of the eastern suburbs cafes and their luxury yachts to be chauffeur driven to a game. ;-)

"Souths salary sombrero" That sounds so funny coming from a Roosters supporter. The truth is there is only one club in the competition to whom the term "salary cap sombrero" applies, and that is the Roosters. This fact is recognised and repeated across multiple sports forum websites from all other supporters. Your attempts at misdirection db couldn't be more transparent. No db, I didn't call Sam a reserve grader, in fact, I left him out of the group of players that Souths development through their lower grades. "they had at least 9 players (including Sam Burgess) that came from Souths lower grades or played their first game in the NRL for the Rabbitohs " Look again at what I wrote. The key word in this case is OR. So the 8 players "mentioned after Sam" came from South's lower grades while the "OR" (which was used to separate Sam from the others. What is factually inaccurate about saying Sam played his first game in the NRL for the Rabbitohs? Checkmate db.

2 premierships and 2nd worst membership for Sydney based NRL clubs. What does it tell you about people's attitude about this organisation?

He is certainly under the pump already. But if the club is loosing players over his style then he is gone no matter what the results. But if he has a loosing season I think it is long odds he hangs around. I guess it depends who is around to replace him.

Nah, you can have our cast offs. If we start loosing a bunch or high profile talent the the Coach's position needs to seriously be looked at.

I definitely hope an animal like Lodge comes nowhere near our club. I'm overly happy about the prospect of South Sydney junior James Roberts either on the same moral grounds. Not interested in Boyd at present either although I have a theory he has been tanking to play himself out of a contract so he can re-join Bennett. I'd be happy to take Oates, Fifita and Haas of your hands though and TPJ if his hamstrings are included. ;-)

It was reported in late 2010 that Inglis had signed a 3 year deal for 1.8 million dollars. This was exclusive of TPAs. Russell Crowe made public statements confirming this figure. If you've got the amount so wrong for Inglis then any other amounts you bandy around are pretty much meaningless.

He has always been a Queenslander at heart. Wouldn’t have played half as many in Blue. If Gallen was playing he would struggle to score half as many tries.
