Cronulla Sharks vs Penrith Panthers: NRL Thursday night forecast

By AJ Mithen / Expert

A huge NRL Round 6 Easter weekend gets underway with Cronulla welcoming Penrith to the Shire.

And I have to be honest – it’s nice to preview a Thursday night game that doesn’t involve the Brisbane Broncos. After three straight Thursday nights, I was starting to run low on Tevita Pangai Junior content.

Neither the Panthers or the Sharks have set the competition on fire this season, but games between these clubs are usually pretty good entertainment with plenty of spice.

This game is ninth versus 11th and while it’s still too early to write teams off, it’s a classic ‘four-point game’ that will come in handy for the winner when top eight spots are being decided.

Both teams are two wins from their five games but the Panthers need to make up a -41 points differential. There’s plenty of time for them to get that back if they can get their sputtering attack up and running.

Cronulla owns the recent history between these clubs. They’ve won six straight against Penrith and eight of the last ten, the most recent being the Sharks’ one-point win in week two of the 2018 finals. After a Valentine Holmes masterclass helped Cronulla bolt to an 18-0 lead, the Panthers chipped away and chipped away to tie the game before a Chad Townsend field goal put Cronulla’s nose in front when it counted.

Holmes is gone now, headed to the NFL preseason with the New York Jets. John Morris is the rookie head coach after Shane Flanagan was punted during an offseason Cronulla aren’t keen to look back on.

It has been a pretty rough opening month for the Sharks. Marquee signing Shaun Johnson is finding his feet after nursing a quadriceps injury, Matt Moylan has been out since Round 2 with a bad hamstring tear, veteran Paul Gallen is dinged up with rib troubles (he’ll need painkillers to get through this game) and much-maligned but actually quite good front rower Aaron Woods has broken his foot and will miss an extended period.

Talisman prop Andrew Fifita is also hobbled by a dodgy hamstring, but at the time of writing, he was named and good to go.

After a competitive opening 40 minutes last Saturday, Cronulla were routed by the Roosters at this venue, down 30 points to nil at one stage before scoring a few tries during junk time.

When you think about it, with the injuries they’ve had at key positions, it’s a decent effort by the Sharks to be in the position they are. Things could be much worse.

Penrith have been incredibly disappointing so far. There were high expectations for the mountain men from inside and outside Panthers Stadium, but their start to 2019 with a leaky defence and the NRL’s worst attack (scoring just 63 points) has baffled many observers. Their two wins are by a combined three points.

The Panthers gave the Gold Coast their first win of the season last week at Robina, unable to take advantage of their host’s defensive generosity and supplying a gift of their own via a 67th-minute penalty try for the decisive score.

This week, the Panthers announced prop James Tamou as club captain. It was an unexpected development with the season well underway because coach Ivan Cleary had already appointed with great fanfare a six-man leadership group featuring Tamou, Nathan Cleary, Josh Mansour, James Maloney, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Isaah Yeo.

At the press conference for Tamou’s appointment, Cleary explained his intention was always to have one captain, and Tamou had “effectively risen above and selected himself’ during the opening month of the season.

To many it’s a strange way to do business, but if that’s what works for them, I won’t judge.

New South Wales prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard has been relegated to the bench. It’s a bit of a wakeup call for RCG because even though his stats aren’t too different from 2018, Ivan Cleary obviously expects more than what he’s getting. Tim Grant will start in the 10 jersey.

These two make a lot of errors, averaging 14 each per game. They’ve both made bad errors at critical moments which have cost them dearly. Cronulla’s weather forecast for Thursday is glorious football weather, so – to break out a sporting cliche to great effect – whoever holds the ball wins the game.

Prediction

Even though these teams have struggled to date, they do seem to bring out the competitive beast in one another.

The Sharks are the favourite with the bookies and the tipsters, but if they lose focus for even ten minutes, Penrith will rack up the points and we’ll all be wondering why we were so worried about them.

Cronulla are capable of drawing Penrith into a grinder of a game, keeping them under wraps and getting the points in a classic Shire mauling.

As a Panthers fan I think that's sadly true: the roster is actually not that impressive. The loss of CHN and especially Peachey is more of a hit than we'd like to admit.

I have no doubt not much will change. Maloney has always been an infield leader but from memory rarely had the c next to his name. Not the one that stands for captain anyway... But what does making Tamou captain give Cleary or the Panthers. He’s off the field half the game and it’s not like he’s a referee whisperer...unless he’s got hidden talents. Does it also undermine Ivan Cleary a bit? “Yeah, yeah...this is what I planned all along. For sure. I just didn’t mention it because...reasons”

The Pennies have a roster which should be at it's peak this season and beyond , a mix of youth and experience , plenty of rep players and experience playing finals footy. Not only that but they've got all the facilities to give the players every advantage. I wouldn't be surprised to see them make another surge up the ladder but you'd have to question why they need to have these golden runs every season to make the finals.

Gotta agree , Baz . I can't work that out , unless Cleary just want's to get Tamou to lift his game with the responsibility of having the "c" behind his name ? Out on the park it will still be Maloney who calls the shots.

Tamou is an interesting call. What does he play, 45 minutes per week?

Beautiful piece of work, AJ. The team that errs least will win this one. The error stats on R C-G and TG are horrifying and that domino- numbing revelation almost persuaded me to go Sharks and move on. You can throw in the six straight a 8/10 stats and anyone going Panthers must be nuts. Tonight is turning point. The see-saw stat says 'W. ' Kikau and James Fisher- Harris are in for blinders as are the Panther back 5 (sorry Albo). Maloney and Cleary will again be back in the Origin hunt by bettering Johnson and Townsend. I just hope James Tamou surprises and leads by example to a deserved win.

The Panthers roster is not that good at all, this is the myth. Dylan Edwards, Seone Katoa? no other clubs are chasing these players. Cleary and Maloney, despite them being the NSW halves are hardly performing and right now you would take Keary, Reynolds, Cody Walker over them. Hell even Chad Townsend is looking better. They are a 5th-8th roster IMO, not top 4.

As I wrote earlier this week, the Panthers have not only been out of sorts - they've been woeful. They're focusing on negatives - don't drop the ball, don't give away penalties, don't miss tackles - and when your focus is on these negatives, that's exactly what you deliver. More dropped balls, more penalties conceded and more missed tackles (67 last week - unheard of). On paper the Panthers have a roster that is the envy of most clubs. With their roster they could run up consecutive titles. They need to BELIEVE. They need to be RUTHLESS. They need DISCIPLINE. I said 2 weeks ago I wouldn't tip them again until they showed me something, so I've gone the Sharks this week. That alone might get the Panthers the 2 points. Negative or reverse thinking? Definitely.

The Sharks have a lot of key players injured, and couple more that probably should be rested tonight. But they have some great young talent coming through ( Nikora, Xerri, the Brayley boys, Williams, Sorensen ). On the other hand the Panthers have a fairly injury free experienced roster, but in awful current form and with an ordinary historical record against the Sharks ( only exceeded by their disastrous record against the Storm). I think the forwards will cancel each other out. I think the halves will break even. The game for me, will be won via the back 5. Xerri v Blake should be a good match up. But I think the Sharks back 5 overall offer far better defence than the Panthers and less mistakes. The Panthers back three in particular are mistake ridden these days.

Couple of tough games to pick this weekend starting with this one. Both teams will be desperate for a win. Sharks at home but then have to factor in the short turnaround and key players carrying injuries. Panthers with the travel from last week. I'm going to go the way of the Sharks solely on the fact that they defend a lot better than the Panthers have shown this year. I have no doubt both teams will score but the Sharks will defend a lot better and should get a narrow win.
