Folau hoping to crowd-fund legal case against Rugby Australia

By News / Wire

Sacked dual-code rugby star Israel Folau has launched a bid to raise donations from the public to fight his legal case against Rugby Australia.

Folau, whose contract with the Australian union’s governing body was terminated in May over homophobic social media posts, has set up a GoFundMe page to raise the $A3 million says he needs to cover costs in his bid to seek reinstatement.

The 30-year-old Wallabies back says he has already spent more than $A100,000 of his own money in fees which are expected to rise to millions of dollars.

The fund had raised $330 from seven donations as of early morning (AEST).

“I believe the termination of my contract is unlawful, which is why I have started legal proceedings against Rugby Australia and Rugby NSW,” Folau, who also posted a video on his own website, said on the GoFundMe website.

“In response, Rugby Australia have already said that they will ‘divert significant resources’ to fight me in court.

“Even if I win, Rugby Australia can appeal. There is every chance that a prominent test case like this could take years and eventually end up in the High Court of Australia.

“My wife Maria and I have already spent over $100,000 of our own money and that was just to try and deal with Rugby Australia’s internal tribunal processes. The money I am asking for is solely to fund the rest of my action in court.

“I know I am putting myself on the line – this action will be very costly in terms of time, money and reputation – but I do not intend to stop now.

“I would be very grateful for your support.”

Only a sadistic psychopath shares Folau's view about people who don't kiss his god's ass. I hope he gets what he wants. Bigotry will dig its own grave when it is exposed. There is no reason to be around people who hold barbaric heinous view against humanity. I hate Christians who talk nice in front of my face but stab me behind my back with political power. It is better this way. I definitely don't ever want to be around people like Israel Folau. Because he exposed himself with his message against non Christians, I know who he is, and I can avoid him. An honest enemy is better than a lying pretentious friend.

This doesn’t mean you can say anything you want at work Bingo, and when your work includes being a "brand ambassador" then you're pretty much at work the whole damn time.

I am still bewildered on how you can get “discrimination” out of sharing an opinion Um maybe because the opinion is discriminatory. It suggests that homosexual people can be judged on no other basis than their sexuality. For example if your local cafe put up a sign that said "we don't serve liars, thieves, fornicators, adulterers or homosexuals" - then that would be discriminatory.

The Bible makes it clear that homosexuals among others will go to Hell unless they repent. If you don't believe the Bible, then it is of no concern to you. If you do believe the Bible, well.....that's exactly what it says. I am still bewildered on how you can get "discrimination" out of sharing an opinion that doesn't actually discriminate (the unjust and/or prejudicial treatment of a group of people) against anyone.

Freedom of religion means the the right to express religious views without discrimination, including discrimination in the workplace. It is a free speech issue in as much as he should have the right to express his religious views on the afterlife without losing is job and career. This doesn't mean you can say anything you want at work but it does mean you can express ideas about the afterlife in your own time.

Hmm what part of "judged solely on their sexual orientation" didn't you get ? If he said we all need to repent or go to hell - then that might well be different.

@Offside. "Suicide is a mental disorder. That’s why someone like Robin Williams who had everything committed suicide. Because it’s a mental problem." Are you "Googling" this stuff? Seriously mate, you sound very naive. Obviously it is mental sickness. Does that make it any different?

@Offside. "You seem to think it is quite ok to describe Christian love as hate" Yes mate. Because, they love to preach how much they love us, but we will all go to hell if we dont do as they say and follow their god! "Do you know the definition of the word Bigot? “Someone who is intolerant of another persons opinion”. Sound like anyone you know?" Yes mate, sounds like all you intolerant bigot christians! ;-)

Well, the money he got ‘could’ have gone to sick people, but I don’t think it would have, and the upside to this all is that more needy people did get more resources, so I guess I$$y pulled a Bradbury and did inadvertently help people. I think I am done with this now, this will be my last post on I$$y. Only going to talk about Rugby from now on, everyone has pitched a tent one their respective sides of the fence and no one seems like moving, which is fair enough. This just gets too narky and that isn’t why I’m here. We have a great 2 weeks of SR to go, then RC, then the flipping RWC! Hopefully I can show I am more a man of my word than certain ex-players or repeat roar-posters who claim they will stop -you know who you are KP. Come on, I had to sign off with one last dig haha. See you on a rugby article.

Just saw channel 9 reporting that there has been an increase in funds donated to causes on GoFundMe since Folau’s went up, so I guess we don’t need to speculate anymore. It seems the virtue signallers put their money where their mouth is.

Interesting you are going down the road of abuse by demeaning my mental capacity? Must mean you lack the intellect to argue my point, so you resort to personal insults. No my friend. I managed to do both. Firstly, there is absolutely no scientific evidence that supports the theory that people are born gay. It is nothing more than a theory You do realise gravity is a theory right? Ah, I'm doing both again ... Science has established that ones sexuality comes from their environment, education and upbringing. Please link us to this Christian website. Although it is refreshing to hear a theist recognise these factors, since it explains which particular flavour of god they invest in. While we're on this one, check this out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animals_displaying_homosexual_behavior Wrong newspapers? Schools? Hanging out with the wrong types? Missing a god in their lives? Blame the parents? Or my brother who was “gay” until he decided to chase a woman to China. She rejected him, so he turned gay again. If you can't cope with homosexuality, bisexuality will blow your mind. For your own good, don't think about it any more. Secondly, he did not threaten anything. 'If you don't stop doing something that is absolutely none of my business, perfectly legal and makes you incredibly happy, and do what I tell you to do which will make you miserable, something terrible will happen to you.' That, is a threat: a suggestion that something unpleasant or violent will happen, especially if a particular action or order is not followed. And he did say it in his own space. The final genuine forehead slapping utterance. The very same public platform he used almost a year to the day ago that caused the first multimedia, international storm. If he'd daubed his words on the walls of parliament he couldn't have guaranteed a wider audience. And he most certainly knew it.

Oh wait, despite you wanting it otherwise, the law still prevents an employer from sacking you for having a different opinion. As has been explained to you on multiple occasions, this has nothing to do with "having a different opinion", your repeated attempts to state is as such are becoming tiresome. Folau assumedly has always held the opinion that gay people will go to hell. Despite that he was hired, paid and, his contracts renewed. It was the act of making this statement publicly whilst representing his employer that caused the problem. You seem intelligent and I know you understand the difference.

So why say employers can't? Are you saying then that the outcome of this saga isn't set in stone.

Yeah, he was charged with a charge normally reserved for players who commit assaults, rapes, take illicit drugs etc. According to your previous statement those players should not be sanctioned by RA anyway, as they were on their own time.

You better hope your employer doesn't hear any opinion you have that is counter to his own. Oh wait, despite you wanting it otherwise, the law still prevents an employer from sacking you for having a different opinion.

Interesting you are going down the road of abuse by demeaning my mental capacity? Must mean you lack the intellect to argue my point, so you resort to personal insults. Firstly, there is absolutely no scientific evidence that supports the theory that people are born gay. It is nothing more than a theory that has followed the Gobbles line of propaganda "a lie said a thousand times, eventually becomes the truth". There is no gay gene. Science has established that ones sexuality comes from their environment, education and upbringing. So using the "born this way" defence is erroneous at best. I could go on with multiple examples that prove my point from the ancient Greeks who had women for procreation and men for pleasure. Or my brother who was "gay" until he decided to chase a woman to China. She rejected him, so he turned gay again. But that's for another debate on another platform. Secondly, he did not threaten anything. He gave an account as to what will happen to certain people if they failed to repent according to the book he believes in. It is a book that says it was written by a God and that God says unless you repent, you will go to hell. Now should Israel lie to those who ask him what that book says? Thus, as according to that book, condemning himself to hell? And he did say it in his own space. Where did you hear his statement from? From Israel's instagram account? Or from the media? Those who want to follow Israel can CHOOSE to follow him. Those who don't, don't.
