George Burgess headed for long ban after being sent straight to the judiciary

By Steve Zemek / Wire

George Burgess has been referred straight to the NRL judiciary for an alleged eye gouge in South Sydney’s defeat to Wests Tigers.

The match review committee on Friday morning charged the Rabbitohs prop with dangerous contact to the eye of Tigers veteran Robbie Farah on Thursday.

It is the second time in eight months Burgess has landed in hot water for an eye gouge, having been found guilty of the act while playing for England late last year.

The English star was suspended for four NRL games, resulting in a 50 per cent loading on whatever penalty he draws this time around.

Replays weren’t conclusive he had dug his fingers into Farah’s face at Bankwest Stadium, however the Tigers hooker remonstrated with referee Adam Gee.

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett said while he didn’t know whether Burgess was guilty of a gouge, he was disappointed contact was made with Farah’s face.

“There was just no need to put himself in that position to start,” Bennett said.

“I’m not condemning him for it, in that I don’t know whether his fingers actually made contact with the eye or not. The point is it was totally unwarranted.”

Canberra forward Hudson Young was earlier this month rubbed out for five weeks for a grade-three eye gouge on Aiden Tolman.

North Queensland firebrand Josh McGuire has twice this year escaped with a fine for contrary conduct for facials on Cameron Munster and Dylan Walker.

The NRL was forced to defend its decision not to charge McGuire with a more serious offence, arguing neither victim made complaints.

The governing body also insisted they had insufficient video evidence to lay a harsher penalty on McGuire.

Given that Farah got up claiming Burgess’ fingers made contact with his eyes, the Englishman is likely to find himself with a case to answer.

“Obviously there was a hand on the face but after that, looking on the big screen that’s all I could see, I only saw it once or twice,” Bennett said.

“I can’t definitely say it was an eye gouge or what it was. There was definitely a hand in the face, no doubt about it, but I thought it was more in the forehead.”

Tigers coach Michael Maguire refused to comment on the incident.

It is believed to be the first time an NRL player has been referred straight to the judiciary since Canberra forward Sia Soliola in 2017.

Gee i hope your right. We know the Sharks have there problems, but the Broncs are turning into a basket case.I hear your Darius has been given a reprieve only due to Milfs injury and 4 SOO players. He is still there Captain with a $2mill contract. This is all gunna end in tears.I've been thinking that Siebold has been overrated for some time,he's had one good season only.

Well the Sharks certainly got touched up by the Broncos in their previous meeting at Suncorp stadium. IMO it was the Sharks worst performance of the year by Far(kurnell). It was largely due to several key players missing and the worst example I have EVER seen of 2 NRL rookies (William Kennedy and Ronaldo Mulitalo) choking and turning in joint Man of the Match performances for the other team. At home and after their sobering brush with ineptitude against the Dogs I expect the Sharks will reverse that result against the Broncos. Especially if Darius Boyd still manages to get selected despite sending out an unmistakable message that he does NOT want to be there anymore.

You could be right.I still think his U B Date is approaching.Thr only thing he’s consistent at is the surrender tackle.Your Siebold theory will be tested this week when my Rocks/Diamonds Sharks meet them - they’ll probably play the Broncs back into form

Thanks for proving my point. The hame's survival and continued expansion depends on the game being successful in Melbourne and north of the NSW border. Of course FOX Sports and CH9 money is invested in growing the game ans increasing their market reach. Given that all 3 QLD teams are currently in the bottom 4 I expect that alarm bells are ringing at NRL HQ which could well be heard in game 3. Fingers crossed I'm wrong but if QLD lose the State of Origin series there is nothing else for them to celebrate this year and that could have dire consequences long term for the games national profile if this continues.

Take off the tinfoil hat and stop screaming wild conspiracies. It isn't a Queensland thing, it's a money thing. No-one knows Hudson Young and sponsors, fans and the crowd wouldn't even miss him, so they can wipe him out at no cost. But a suited up McGuire in the stands reduces the appeal of the game he's watching. Burgess will get a tiny slap too, he's got a big profile and sponsors wouldn't like one of their golden kids rubbed out by the big bad League they support. Greenberg doesn't work for you, he works for them. Money. That's what it's all about. Don't listen to their words, watch what they do.

I never mentioned 18th man. He comes out of the 17 and the team is charged an interchange. It is not economic to carry a player in your squad and under your salary cap who's job it is to be suspended for the entire year. Besides nobody gets sent off now so it would be even easier to carry such a player.

You do this you open a whole other can of worms. What is to stop a fringe forward from taking out the oppositions best player knowing that there side wont be punished as yeah you get sent off but you just bring on another player! I know coaches are never trying to bend the rules or anything but what is to stop them just selecting a thug and then have a player with a bit more skill to be that 18th man replacement after you have taken out say Cam Smith or Kayln Ponga

No mate. Boyd is a veteran with a tonne of experience. He has played over 300 NRL games and over 50 rep games so he knows better. That's why players usually stand on or behind the dead ball line and come forward if the kick is falling short. They orient themselves before the ball is kicked so they know where the dead ball line is before the ball gets to them. If Boyd had done that, and I believe out of habit he would have, then he KNEW pretty much where the line was. With that being the case, at well over chest height, the ball was easily going dead. If he had left the ball to continue on it's course or taken two steps back to try to catch it the Broncos would have had a penalty at halfway. In any case, Boyd had other players around him that could have called to let it go or remind Boyd how close he was to the dead ball line before Boyd tried to catch the ball. It looked more like a player trying to keep the ball in to score than one defending a kick-off and using the dead ball line to his advantage. So basically I think Boyd knew what he was doing and has been doing a "Jimmy the Jet" in forcing Seibold's hand in order to get a release from his current contract or to play out the remainder of his contract in QLD Cup. There have been far too many uncharacteristic mistakes and half-hearted efforts by Boyd this season and this was just the latest in a long line. Q.E.D. Boyd either wants out or Seibold gone.

It's called trying to be too clever by half. In his defence, its pretty hard to judge where the deadball line is when your 2foot in the air. I guess thats why he not in SOO,he's not the player he used to be.

Darius Boyd is a double agent for the Knights! Why else would he take the ball touch in-goal from the kick-off when he could have stepped back and caught the ball from over the dead ball line for a penalty at halfway?

A similar thing happened when Cam Smith repeatedly stomped on Issac Luke's head to free himself of Luke's tackle to get a quick play the ball. Issac's head bounced up and down off Smith's boot onto the turf so much that it looked like a game of paddle ball! It ended with Issac Luke dazzed and concussed and a penalty... to the Storm! Luke was penalised for repeatedly attacking Smith's boot with his head! He escaped a suspension though but to this day he has no memory of the event and still dreams of a giant boot bouncing him up and down on a jumping castle.

A Liverpool kiss is done with the forehead. As are all head butts As I wrote earlier if Graham had made contact with Burgess’ face with his forehead or the top of his head I might have a different view, but it was cheek to cheek contact. Romantic if anything. Burgess came off second best. Someone had to. You might have watched it 100 times, you’re not exactly an impartial witness. Dave ‘tackle bag’ Tyrrell gets concussed having a shower in the morning. Speak to Roadkill about winning at any cost. He put the health of one of his own players at risk to win the game by calling him soft when he wanted to come off. Concussion protocols were in place in 2014. I think that premiership should have an asterisk next to it, just like the Storm ones...

"Lamb didn’t hit Hanley with his elbow. It was his forearm. Hanley ducked into it"...mmmm, that's not how I remember it at all TB. I was actually at that GF and, from memory, Hanley used his head to viciously attack Lamb's arm......it's fortunate Baa wasn't injured. IMO Hanley was lucky to escape without a fine.

Islam and Judaism teach the same thing in this regard. The only difference is that Christians and Jews aren't the ones beheading people or throwing them off 7 story roof tops because of these beliefs. But by all means, a single post threatening someone with a fate that the intended victims own belief system doesn't even support is grounds for a witch hunt and to persecute an entire faith. Like I said, because unlike the "Islamic elephant in the room" there is NO chance that it will blow up in your face. For the record, I have stated publically on this site that I think Folau should have kept his views on this matter private whilst he was employed by a sport that has commercial concerns, sponsorship dollars and marketing of the game to consider and protect. It was an indulgence that threatened the image and profile of the sport and put the livelihood of all players, not just his own, at risk.

James Graham went into that game with a plan. From the first tackle he put his head in the way of Sam Burgess to that end. During the game his head collided with 3 different Rabbitohs players at least 6 times! Hardly accidents! Graham connected with Dave Tyrrell on at least 4 of those occasions. In each of these tackles he leant forward and lead with the head keeping his body out of play until the last moment, most significantly with his final attempt on Tyrrell when Graham kept his arms by his side and launched himself head first at Tyrrell like a snow white missile! TB, I've watched and re-watched that GF (and studied these incidents) enough times to know what I am talking about. In the end when CH9 zoomed in on Graham as Tyrrell was being tacken off the field by medicab the crowd let out a loud "boo" directed at Graham. He just chuckled and then grinned. Not the actions of a man who had just "accidentally" been involved in 6 head clashes leaning head first into tackles and who was genuinely concerned for the welfare of a player being carried off due to their actions. "No one tries to head butt someone with their own face. It doesn’t happen." It does in Liverpool, England where Graham is from. Or have you never heard of a "Liverpool kiss"? It also happens in boxing more often than it should and the pommies used to use these tactics in test matches in the 70's - 90's (and before). I'm sure I remember Adrian Morley being caught and suspended on several occasions for doing the same. TB you can just as easily say that one man wouldn't try to bite another man's ear off on purpose but the pressure of the occasion and a premiership on the line can change all that as it did with James Graham in the 2012 GF on Billy Slater and with Mike Tyson against Evander Holyfield. It even happened in a regular club match in the old days when Newtown's "Bumper" Farrell lost part of his ear in a scrum. The bottom line is that the Dogs were complete long shots in 2014, genuine "underdogs", and Graham was looking for any advantage he could get and his strategy nearly paid off. It would have paid off under today's closely monitored HIA system. Given his history, and for that reason, I hope James Graham never plays in a GF again (sorry DPS/Scott). Re Lamb and Hanley, no the little Lilliputian cocked his elbow and raised his forearm with intentionality to do harm completely outside the laws of the game. Had it happened today he would have been sent off. The same applies to Manly's John Bucknall and his dog shot king hit on an unsuspecting John Sattler in the first 5 mins of the 1970 GF. Same tactic, take out the leader early just like James Graham's attempt on another Rabbitohs leader, Sam Burgess. Winning at ANY cost has NO honour TB. Thankfully, Souths have 20 premierships they have won honourably and only ONE I'm not at all proud of. The 1909 premiership that Souths won by forfeit against the Balmain Tigers after they failed to show up for the GF. Prior to the game BOTH clubs had been to boycott the game in protest as the NSWRL GF was being played as a curtain raiser for an Australia vs NZ test match. I will still count that title though because the Tigers cheated Souths out of the 1969 premiership and in so doing prevented them from winning 5 premierships in a row! So even-steven.

George deserve 10 weeks but will probably get 2 given the wet lettuce slaps issued this season. I can just hear the Bunnies lawyer now "Maguire got a fine and he had form, and my man's a choirboy"
