The NRL judiciary has become a joke, after Tariq Sims was found guilty of a Grade 1 dangerous contact charge and will miss Origin 3.
Anyone who saw the footage can tell that Michael Morgan essentially fell into Sims’ shoulder and chest. It was not a late hit.
Morgan took the defensive line on and fell into the defender trying to tackle him. Sims did not lead with his shoulder, or swing his arm. He merely made a tackle that Morgan fell into.
There was nothing Sims could have done.
I understand play makers need to be protected but if a playmaker runs into the defence and injures himself in the process, the tackler should not be punished.
The most astonishing thing about this decision is when you compare it to last year when Billy Slater was set to miss the grand final after a shoulder charge.
It was clear that Billy was in trouble – he had obviously performed a shoulder charge and the rules are clear – and he was expecteded to miss the decider.
No one wanted him to but it was expected, so there was plenty of surprise when he got off. It was good to see him play, but at the same time he only got let off because of who he was.
Now compare it to the Sims case.
Morgan holds the ball up and takes on the defensive line, Sims attempts to tackle him and Morgan injures himself in the process. There’s less than a second between Morgan passing the ball and Sims tackling him.
But none of this really matters. Everyone knows there’s two sets of rules. Everyone knows there’s no consistency or common sense.
I’m not saying this because I’m a Blues supporter – NSW actually have more chance of winning now that David Klemmer is going to replace Sims. In a way, it’s a good thing.
But I can’t help but feel sorry for a player who did nothing wrong and is now going to miss the biggest game of his life simply because the judiciary is a joke.

The Barry "A load of rubbish?" Well the referee and the video panel on the day didn't even consider the tackle justified a penalty. The judiciary took 54 minutes to decide it justified a suspension after Sims gave a perfectly plausible explanation which indicated innocence. Yet you think it was a lay down misere? Oh come on! I appreciate that opinions may differ but your suggestion that Tariq Sims has "made a career" of grubby behaviour is disgraceful and you should be ashamed of yourself. The gallery of armchair experts on this site are all too ready to rubbish players reputations. More care should be exercised in ensuring that they have the necessary evidence to back it up. Anyway St George doesn't employ grubs, we don't need to, we've won 16 Premierships without them.

i'd have gone teddy but no argument if it was cook or cordner or a few others. PS, you'll never convince me that over time, nsw has not benefited from far more than its share of dodgy decisions and wonky refs and i am sure we could argue that for days, but i have no answer for you as to last year's MOTM. it really was highway robbery. bad enough we lost but then the embarrassment of a pity award.

Spot on...I love the "he fell into it" excuse. Not remotely relevant, nor anything to do with the actual rules of the game. The NRL counsel made your exact point..."There was direct contact to the head by the left shoulder. And being contact to the head it was high. Forceful contact, forceful enough for player Morgan not only to be taken from the field but to take no further part in the game. It was slightly late, but that's not the be all and end all."

What a load of rubbish. I don’t think the hit was outrageously late, Morgan took the ball as close to the line as he possibly could. It was definitely high. “He fell into it” hasn’t been an excuse at the judiciary for a decade. “He hit him with the shoulder, there was no swinging arm” hasn’t been a defence since the days of Adrian Morley. The onus is on the defender to not make contact with the head. Sims didn’t lower himself at all to make a tackle and he knocked Morgan out. Sims has made a career in whacking smaller, defenceless halves after they’ve passed or kicked. Bad luck. A week is a fair result.

No, my point is that IMO Tedesco and Cook were the clear standouts over the rest of the Blues in ALL 3 games and also Billy Slater who only played in game 2 and 3 and was hardly dominant in either. Despite this fact he still inexplicably won MotM and player of the series in game 3 which, by complete coincidence, just happened to be Billy's Origin swan song. You just can't buy that sort of luck, can you? ;-)

SPOT ON, Mitchell Hamilton! Anyone who doesn't see it this way is a deadset one eyed goose!

agreed. cook was another. the list was not intended to be comprehensive - otherwise i'd have just about had to list your entire team. and i could not bring myself to do that. unless someone has an absolute blinder in game 3, hard to see it going to anyone but tedesco. of course, that is unless somehow we actually win the game and hence the series, because it would be outrageous then to give it to a bloke on the losing team.

It should have been Tedesco's trophy last year (if not Damien Cook, who you left out) and it "should" be Teddy's trophy with year as well. But as I said I said, in Origin ANYTHING can happen, even when QLD lose they win!

Seriously Papi, Les Boyd, Steve Roach, Ben Ellais, Terry Hill, Mark Gyer, Hopa, Greg Bird, Paul Gallen, Luke O’Donnell, Fafita, Bau Scott and how many others earning selection basically because they bring the Dirty Sheet. What team bases a game plan around the word “cattle Dog” punch your opponent? I suppose Jamie Godard was a grub because he returned service and got the points? Please what are Ian Roberts, Mario, Les Davidson and most recently the Burgers claim to fame? “South Sydney way” would be a hilarious quote coming from Wayne Chisholm. LOL. What about GI embracing the Souths culture doing a DCE backflip before DCE even knew how to do one? Was GI’s first suspension during his Career at Souths embarrassing the culture? I know isolated instances and Queenslanders are all rotten to the core. LOL

i wouldn't call billy winning the wally lewis medal a conspiracy (there is a view here that as it is the wally lewis medal, it should only be available to qlders). just a really odd, obviously flawed, even a shocker of a decision. the only defence i could offer (not that i would want to defend it) was that nsw had a lot of very good players last series. to the extent that if you read the old reports, there are about five players all up for it and no one could decide just who should have got it - tom T, teddy, boyd C, maloney are all mentioned as deserved winners. we only had the one bloke. perhaps the support for the various nsw players was diluted because of that and slater the last man standing. but even i can't begin to justify it going to billy.

If Morgan doesn't have the ball it's late, if his chin is colected in the tackle its high. It's not rocket surgery.

That's right. End of story. Fact. And Morgan was concussed by the wind. Plus the Bulldogs are going to win the premiership, beating the Titans in the GF 51-50 with a field goal in the 99th minute of golden point.

Dallas Johnson is on the judiciary? I had him pegged to be barely coherent after the concussions. Maybe concussions to old DJ are like drugs to Kieth Richards

I suspect young Ashleigh is concerned about the $30K worth of memories her and Tariq have just lost? Maybe she should consider the consequences of the stupid actions by player that have other players suffering memory and cognitive problem from being hit in the head recklessly and unnecessarily.

The is no doubt that over the first two games James Tedesco has been the player of the series. Teddy would have to have a Cody Walker/Latrell Mitchell-like game 1 performance to jeopardise getting the "player of the series" after game 3. The only person who could beat him for the award at this point is Billy Slater. After all, it's happened before Ken and QLD lost 2 out of 3 then too! But there's no conspiracy. ;-)

very true (the anything can happen bit). first to confess that over the years, Qld has had one or two decisions go its way (of course, it does not make up for the dozens of times we got dudded). more seriously, for me, the ref'ing has not been perfect over the last decade but it seems more even handed than the old days. next week, i think teddy is the best player in the comp at the moment and sadly, i think he'll prove it. it will take a mighty effort for the maroons to get up but it has happened before. i plan on a really good cigar and an old rum so at least the evening is not a total loss.
