My All Australian side after Round 17

By Doran Smith / Roar Guru

Based on the first 17 Rounds of the 2019 AFL season I have picked my All Australian team.

Only four players selected in the team in Round 6 have made it through to Round 17: Jack Crisp, Travis Boak, Jarrod Witts and Jordan de Goey, with Boak the only player to be selected in the Round 6, 11 and 17.

There are eight other players who have been selected in the team from Round 11: Daniel Rich, Brad Crouch, Michael Walters, Ben Cunnington, Andrew Gaff, Marcus Bontempelli, Lachie Neale and Caleb Daniel.

My All Australian side after Round 17

B: Daniel Rich (Lions), Dane Rampe (Swans), Brad Sheppard (Eagles)
HB: Jack Crisp (Magpies), Robbie Tarrant (Kangaroos), Rory Laird (Crows)
C: Andrew Gaff (Eagles), Lachie Neale (Lions), Jack Billings (Saints)
HF: Brad Crouch (Crows), Michael Walters (Dockers), Travis Boak (Power)
FF: Jordan de Goey (Magpies), Marcus Bontempelli (Bulldogs), Luke Parker (Swans)
Foll: Jarrod Witts (Suns), Ben Cunnington (Kangaroos, Co-Captain), Jack Macrae (Bulldogs, Co-Captain)
Int: Scott Lycett (Power), Lachie Hunter (Bulldogs), Josh Kelly (Giants), Caleb Daniel (Bulldogs)

Backs

Daniel Rich has been tremendous for the Lions this season – he’s a big reason some people classify Brisbane as contenders. Dane Rampe has been phenomenal for the Swans, playing a key role for them in the back half. Brad Sheppard has been instrumental in the Eagles sitting in the top four on the AFL ladder. Jack Crisp has been perhaps Collingwood’s best player this season. Robbie Tarrant has been a key part of North Melbourne moving up the ladder as probably been the most consistent centre half back in the competition this season. Rory Laird has provided plenty of run out of defence for the Crows.

Midfielders

Andrew Gaff has played outstanding footy this season. Lachie Neale could well win the Brownlow Medal. Jack Billings has been a shining light for the Saints.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Forwards

Brad Crouch has been selected on a half forward flank of late and has been Adelaide’s best player. Michael Walters is the reason the Dockers have won some of their games this year, with the forward delivering at important times in matches. Travis Boak being selected in the team is a no-brainer given he’s been extremely consistent this season. Jordan de Goey is probably the best forward pocket in the competition, kicking at least one goal in every game he’s played this season. Marcus Bontempelli is arguably the best player in the competition overall. Luke Parker has the ability to play in the forward pocket and push up into the midfield.

Followers

Jarrod Witts has been Gold Coast’s best performer this season; the Suns would have lost by even bigger margins without him in the ruck. Ben Cunnington has won plenty of the ball and played a key role in North Melbourne’s rise up the ladder. Jack Macrae does his job, playing his role for the team with no fuss, but is inspirational to watch as he always shows great endeavour accumulating possessions.

Interchange

Scott Lycett has brought life back into the Power’s finals hopes this season, relishing the chance to be the No. 1 ruckman at the club. Lachie Hunter has been a pivotal part of the Bulldogs’ team, and they’re a better side with him in it. Josh Kelly has been instrumental in GWS sitting in the top eight at the end of Round 17 despite playing only 12 games due to injury. Caleb Daniel is a player that goes about his work with minimum fuss but has been one of the form half back flankers in the competition.

Recency bias is the only thing that could justify not having any Geelong players in the team.

Not sure how you picked this... You just seem to name a few teams' players you liked best.. without any clarification of why they edge out guys like T Kelly, Dangerfield, T Stewart, Blicavs, Cripps, Fyfe, Grundy, Coniglio, Shuey and others. e.g. So what if Witts has been great for the Suns... Grundy has been stellar for the the Pies and the best ruck this year (in the top 10 of AFL Coaches vote award at the moment). I'm a Swans fan and I don't believe Rampe and Parker are the best two players in those spots. The Cats have the best defence this year but you can't even find a spot for one of their guys but put Rampe in?

Not too bad. I would slip out the Goe and put Gazza and McCarthy. The Goe’s head is equivalent to two players.

The AA always has a power forward, true full forward as full forward. Last 6 years Jack Riewoldt, Josh Kennedy x3, Buddy, Cameron. Hawkins has had two average weeks all year. Cameron has kicked heaps and he started the season with an injured shoulder. He does his job. Kicks goals. You can't say that the Bont contributes more. Of course he does, he plays on the ball. It should go to one of the true full forwards.

His a good player Richie, don’t get me wrong. But he is a one trick pony. Mark and kick player who is very slow when the ball hits the ground. I guess I’ve seen more of him with Tigers and never realised how slow he was. His turning circle makes Mason Cox look like Cyril Rioli. A good player to have but not worth his hefty price tag IMO.

Jeremy Cameron's stats are better than his All Australian year. Will be the CHF or FF in season 2019.

Lynch was best in ground last week. He is currently equal top in contested markets this season. If he stays fit, it is only a matter of time with him.

You know I fear your boys the most. Any other team beating us, I think we would be either unlucky or choking. Surely I didn't use the C word. Just decided, I am going for the orange team.

I like that team a lot. I’d bring in Danger and have Boak Emergency Rampe in for Laird I’d be tracking Darling and Dunkley for remainder of the year. Strong finishes could see them make it
