Why Teague must be appointed Carlton coach

By Debby Palti / Roar Rookie

The question of who will coach Carlton in 2020 has been heating up, with David Teague’s campaign gaining momentum from fans and players alike.

On AFL 360, Teague chatted to the hosts and faced questions about the team and his ambitions to become senior coach. The way he handled himself with poise and intellect was admirable.

He chooses his words with a level of respect not only for Carlton but for his role and the coach selection process. His self-assuredness in tackling questions fired at him not only then but after games since he took over is a quality that cannot be overlooked.

He has proven his ability to coach given the circumstances in which he took over from Brendon Bolton, who was instrumental in laying the foundations for the young players we have today.

He has transformed a team filled with talent and potential into a side that is now hugely respected and, at times, feared.

Teague has all the hallmarks of the makings of a great coach – his calmness, his openness and his ability not to stutter or waiver under pressure. He handles questions about the Carlton job with incredible dignity.

I have seen him during open training and he brings pride to the playing group – pride in playing the game their way and allowing them to develop and fight for their place on the team. He is also bringing back the players’ hunger to play AFL for the club.

He is not mincing words and he is not afraid to be tough when needed. A prime example is the dropping of Mitch McGovern to make him earn his spot and not just assume it was a given.

The surge of support for Teague to become the senior coach at Carlton grows every day.

The players, fans and the club as a whole has warmed to him. Future players will step into a team on the rise that’s striving for success on and off the field.

The club is breeding a culture of respect and admiration across the board and a deep-seated hunger to put on the navy blue and fight for every single quarter. The fans haven’t seen this for a while, and since Teague has taken over, that is exactly what we are seeing.

I don’t want to see a coach who has the mindset of past glories and a game that has passed them by. I want a coach who understands every single facet of the modern game, which includes not only physical health but mental fitness as well.

I want a coach who understands the modern game on all levels and what this entails. For some coaches, the game as a senior coach as passed them by – but they would be great mentors.

The club stands on a precipice in terms of who they appoint as senior coach, and I like the fact that they are taking their time and probably waiting until the end of the season.

But they shouldn’t wait too long because the footy world is watching and there may be a star player out there who is looking at leaving their current club and is deciding where to make their next step in their career.

The signing of Teague could be just the nudge that will make this type of player take that next step and nominate Carlton.

If Teague is signed, give him the support and time to develop the club and the team we all want.

The foundations are there.

I remember the Adamson case. 1978 was the year Norwood won the flag in their centenary year. The only senior team in Australia to do so. We lost to Sturt all year in home n away and 2nd Semi. We repecharged to the GF and had one the best comebacks of alltime to beat the Double Blues by one point.

Mate, the mighty Falcons, formerly the Cardinals. I used to watch them at Leederville in the late 1970's and early 1980's , was always a good afternoons entertainment. Brian Adamson moved to Norwood in 1978 from West Perth and set a legal precedent when WPFC tried to stop him, he took them to court in a historic case and won. That case is the precedent that would be used if ever a player wanted to challenge the draft, ''restraint of trade'' being the key ruling to come out of it. ;-)

West Perth is my WAFL team. Mainly because Johhny Wynne came from there to play for Norwood. I loved his no nonsense style of play.

Carlton FC needs to this time not use some whack job committee of outsiders, including a failed soccer coach, to select our coach. The club itself needs to take ownership of it's decisions so we can pin it directly on them when they cock up.

So Judd says he wasn't talking about Teague and Teague says he doesn't feel disrespected but those that believe Judd didn't disrespect Teague are wrong. Interesting world you live in.

See Above! The only ones who don't think Judd was talking about (and disrespecting) Teague are the Carlton faithful. The rest of the known universe thinks differently.

Pretty sure there is a legal loophole that allows you to divorce your brother?

So my memory was rusty on it but, in my defence, I'm not a Bays supporter. Still, there was a differential between WA & SA. ---- I have to live with the fact one of my brother's barracks for Vic team; an eternal shame!

Well said, Debby. Nice the way you covered the issue of experienced coaches. If Carlton still think they can get Clarko, I can see why they're waiting. Teague's not going anywhere. The players know it's going to be Teague or Clarkson, so shouldn't be concerned. I think the only other coach or ex coach worth consideration would be Hardwick. What he's done this year with Richmond has been phenomenal - very Hawks 2014 like. Fagan is coach of the year, but Hardwick is right behind him. If I could have any coach for my team right now, it would be Hardwick. And I'd probably have Teague in the top half dozen.

Actually, Ross Gibbs (Bryce's Dad) had played 191 of his 253 games with Glenelg before Adelaide joined the competition in 1991. Therefore he was deemed ineligible for Father Son (odd that).

Ok here was the rules at the time: If your father played 150 games for a WAFL team you could play for the Weagles or Dockers under Father-Son. But your dad had to play 200 games for a SANFL team to be Father-Son eligible. 50 more games. Gibbs dad ‘only’ played a 170 odd games for the Bays. Clearly inequitable. —- This is not a feeling but the actual rules.

This is the sense of entitlement that one expects from Adelaide. Gibbs’ dad played for Glenelg not the Adelaide Crows. I know you guys think you own South Australian football...but seriously come on.

The year of tippetgate..the club was set to select Cripps in the draft before the picks were taken away - you got one there from us!!

Gee, I remember when you had all those great SA players in the 80s. And ya hide, you got Gibbs unfairly. If he was Western Australian you would not have got him under the unfair rules the VFL, I mean, AFL had at the time. He really should’ve been eligible to play Father-Son for the Crows!!!
