VOTE: Wallabies DIY player ratings from Bledisloe 1

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies have won the Bledisloe Cup opener, beating the All Blacks by 21 points in Perth. Now it’s time to rate the players.

They would run up 47 points in their six tries to four victory, scoring more points against the All Blacks than any Wallabies side has done before.

But we want you to tell us how each player fared in the performance.

How much was Michael Hooper’s incredible effort worth? Do Reece Hodge’s two tries put him in the upper echelon? How much needs to be taken with a grain of salt given the All Blacks only had 14 players during the second half?

If you’ve not done our DIY player ratings before, it’s a simple enough process. Hit up the form below and rate each player from 1 to 10 based on their performance. We’ll keep track of the results and publish our findings tomorrow.

You’re free to rate players as you like with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest – or toss an NA on any player not worth rating – but if you’re looking for a bit more detail than that, our handy little guide might help you make your judgments…

1. Had he not played, the team would have been better off. Negatively affected the performance of the side. May God have mercy on his soul.
2. Anonymous. Was he even there?
3. Did some things that you expect a player to be able to do, but did a whole bunch of other things that sucked.
4. Was passable in patches, but not up to standard in a squad of such depth.
5. Performed his role without anything really noticeable happening.
6. Good.
7. Pretty good, actually.
8. Very good.
9. Excellent.
10. Might as well have been John Eales.

Rodda and LSL will be a good locking pair. Nasaraini at 8. Hopefully a Valenti or someone to put their hand up to play 6. Is Matt Phillip going to be around? He's a decent lock.

If only we could clone Arnold eh. Perhaps a twin?

You know, I was going to refrain from the comparison but yes. Lomu on Catt certainly came to mind.

Cheika ignored Arnold for far too long and at the slightest dip dropped him. The lock pairing for a while should have been Arnold and Coleman and then Arnold and Rodda. Now both Arnold and Coleman have been lost and the probable lock pairing will be out of Rodda, LSL and Hocking. Not as intimidating is it?

Hodge? The linebreaks, the take in the air, the general threat he posed. That was his best game as a WB. I would give him an 8.

I agree. Have disliked Beale in most games since then, but he had a great tournament and Folau was out of sorts injured so didn't play as well as he can when on fire.

That game was won by the forwards. Well done Wallabies. RA: Take note - tight 5 dominance must be our first second and third goal. Develop a stable of powerful, hard forwards and we will win more matches than we lose. In regards to Hooper "How many turnover's did Hooper get? - He doesn't play like a true 7" - What a load. You can bet that opposition spend a lot of hours making plans for him. He is our most targeted player for a reason. Hooper's role: Huge tackle count and be involved in everything. Be a ruck pest - slow ball and commit players from other team and get the odd steal. Pressure the opposition 10 and cover line breaks/chips. Stand up to opposition when required (see Savea). In attack: Make yards in tight through leg drive and taking gaps. Provide support for breakouts at pace through linking and securing the first ruck. Be the hungriest player on the pitch in almost every match and have the biggest engine. As pointed out, he needs some big hard men in the pack around him, but what successful team doesn't need big hard pack.

Totally agree. For all the chat about our backs, without guys like arnold coming to the fore we are nothing. He is a beast and has come on so well in 2019.

I thought Arnold was immense. I'd be giving him 9.

NZ scored a BS try in there too. There was the forward pass, and as usual all NZ tries go unscrutinized, while all Aussie tries must pass a five minute review from All Angles.

Hooper 10? I’ll ypgrade his solid 6 to a seven for getting absolutely hammered and keeping coming, but that’s still not good enough for a test 7. We need his motor on a bigger, more effective player.

This Aussie hopes we also believe that. It's nice to snag a win but we can't pretend it had no impact on the game... It was a game changer. I'm worried the thud back to Earth next week could break some bones.
