UPDATED: AFL semi-finals 2019 fixture: Who plays who, when and where

By The Roar / Editor

The first week of the 2019 AFL Finals series has seen the results decide which teams will play who, when and where over the next two weeks.

West Coast’s win over Essendon on Thursday night put the Eagles through to a semi-final, but they needed to wait till Friday to know which they would face.

Collingwood and Geelong played out a tense affair that night with the Magpies ultimately holding on to book a prelim final, while the Cats will take on the Eagles next Friday.

Saturday then saw two largely uncompetitive matches, with GWS winning through to a semi-final by smashing the Western Bulldogs, before Richmond routed Brisbane.

That means the Tigers are into a home prelim, and the Lions will host the Giants in a semi next week.

The results mean the Grand Final will now be contested by two clear pools of teams – one of Richmond, West Coast or Geelong will play one of Collingwood, Brisbane or GWS.

The Pies and Tigers will be favoured to win through after securing home prelims, in what would be billed as one of the biggest grand finals in history given the size of those clubs.

It's never a bust when the Pies lose the GF that's for sure! lol. Especially when you get to see a doco of Treloar and Bucks sooking up a storm in the process lmao.

Agreed, both Brissy and GWS are capable of beating the Pies. GWS on paper look a lot better than Brisbane but they are a joke at the MCG tho, and the Lions last start at the G was pretty good. Pies haven't impressed me at all for months. But somehow they've been able to scrape over the line and get some wins.

Doesn't matter, WCE will beat Pies again. If I was a Tiger or Eagles man I would have been more confident after seeing the Pies who were ordinary. Good 1st quarter but were rubbish afterwards. Last 3 quarters Cats plus 30 in contested ball and 17 more inside 50, Collingwood only had 4 scoring shots after half time lmao. If Hawkins kicked that one late they would've given themselves a chance although it was unlikely. But hey ...a wins a win I guess.

I’d also like you to knock out Richmond but you need to beat the rebounding Cats who I reckon will be brutal this week.

Form line of 22 MCG wins in a row didn’t stop the Pies last year.

So they should trade Greene because he is always in the stands but you think Gold Coast would give picks 1, 2 and 20? Or maybe it would be 1, 19 and 20. Seriously?

Timbo if you define last years GF as a bust I'd hate to see you comment on previous finals, ie. ones that have been blowouts. And if the so called best 2 teams all year not making the GF is what constitutes a bust then we've certainly had a few busts over the years

Unfortunately for the Giants Toby Greene will likely get rubbed out for the finals... with him in the side they can beat anyone...but he is a huge loss if he isnt. He's done some stupid stuff over the years but gouging the Bont was one of the dumbest. Giants might think about trading him...whats the point of having one of the best players in the league if hes always in teh stands when you need him? Id be having a very good chat to the Gold Coast if I was them, No 1 pick, plus the other one the AFL will give them, plus a top second round pick would be a fair price for the mercurial maniac.

Very different form line for the Tigers this year. I didn't feel confident going into last year's Prelim. I think the only Team that stands between us and the Premiership is actually the Eagles.

Gee I actually think the Pies look very vulnerable. Good for the Giants or Brissie to be a big chance if they get there. Yeah I know on the MCG - however - if De Goey is gone again; basically comes down to Elliott, Stephenson and Mihocek to kick the goals. The week off may or may not be a blessing. The Giants will be sweating on Greene - but with Kelly, Hopper, Taranto, Whitfield and if Greene is there too - and Cameron up forward.....they'll come hard. Be interesting to see what crowd the Lions get hosting the Giants this week - they'll be super keen not to go out in straight sets.

Apologies to Schofield and Sheed. The extra day against Geelong will help if it’s down to conditioning. I’d like us to knock over Richmond, though. That would be sweet. Thanks to Floyd for his measured response.

I’m on record as saying the Eagles are the best side in the competition on paper. Losing to the Hawks was a massive blow to your chances though and you now need to beat Cats and Tigers just to qualify.

It’s a hell of a thing analysing all this, Doc. A real hell of a thing! We just don’t know at this delicate stage of proceedings. Although, I get the sneaking suspicion (not sure why) that you’re fairly confident WCE will take everyone to the cleaners.

Anon is really just an embarrassment to himself and this site PTS. He pops us and makes stupid statements or incorrect predictions and then disappears for weeks hoping we forget!

Fact is ,any side with Shuey, Naitanui,Yeo,Redden and Gaff running through the middle, McGovern,Hurn,Barrass, Jetta and Sheppard down back and Rioli, Ryan, Darling ,Waterman, Kennedy and Cripps up forward, workhorses in Masten,Nelson and Hickey...we are a hell of a side. How do they match up ,player for player, would you say?

Yes you are, Pete. But so too are a few other sides. Probably even more so. It all remains to be seen.

Cats are also just in okay form - remember they were only one game & % clear of the Eagles at the end of the H&A.
