'Kangaroo court': Burgess to face NRL after judiciary criticism

By News / Wire

South Sydney captain Sam Burgess will front the NRL over criticism of its judiciary as the debate over the process further intensified on Wednesday.

In another day of high drama, Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson became the latest to advocate for changes to rules over bans for minor offences in finals matches.

Unhappy over the one-game ban dished out to prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Robinson believes it should be harder to suspend players for finals matches after they commit a particular offence for the first time.

But his views were nowhere near as scathing as Burgess’, who labelled the process a “kangaroo court” in an interview on Tuesday after his one-game ban for a hair pull.

The NRL bit back on Wednesday, asking him to meet with chief executive Todd Greenberg and show cause as to why he should not be reprimanded for the outburst.

“On face value, Sam’s comments about the judiciary breach our code of conduct and are offensive to both the chairman (Supreme Court judge Geoff Bellew) and members of the panel who carry out their duties impartially, without fear or favour,” Greenberg said.

“We take a pragmatic view about most of the debate that occurs around the game.

“However, the NRL Judiciary is a longstanding and independent process based on the principles of natural justice in our court system.

“Our chair (Bellew) is an esteemed judge of the highest calibre and our panel members are former high-profile players who are independent from clubs.

“The integrity of the system and the people in it should never be questioned.”

Burgess also claimed that players had become subjected to trial by media and social media, and her also accused the game of being reactive.

The Souths forward remains unhappy he was banned from the opening week of the finals for a hair pull on Roosters forward Billy Smith in the final round of the regular season.

The Englishman would have been able to take a fine for the offence, but was ineligible due to receiving more than two convictions during the season.

A similar fate awaited Waerea-Hargreaves on Tuesday night

Accused of a trip, the Roosters prop failed to beat the charge at the judiciary and was banned for the preliminary final against either Melbourne or Parramatta.

Had it not been his fourth conviction of the year for other offences, he could have escaped with a fine.

“The one thing I will say is missing a game for an incident you haven’t done before that had no impact on the game or anything else, to miss a finals game (is tough),” Robinson said.

“To not have your best players on the park is disappointing for fans. We’d like him out there but it’s not going to change the way we play or think.”

Same here, just keep living in your little cacoon and 'shell be right mate' and as Papi said, maybe the NRL admin and blokes like you, can join Kim Jon Un in NK to take notes on how to streamline the NRL on NK's system lol

You’ve got no idea Nat, if you think that Greensburg is trying to protect the game! And ignorant??? The only ignorant one is you, as blokes like Sam and co are one of the main attraction that the NRL has, just listen to Des Hasler’s interview and comments on Sam! But, its not unusual for a bugerlug like Greensburg and blokes like you to try to be ‘up in arms’ about Sam, its part of the course today! Ive been around (probably longer than you) and RL is going mushy soft, that is my only beef!

The bad old days are back Larry. The chasm between QLD sides and Sydney based teams has never been greater. Not since the QRL decided to merge the best talent available in the BRL and combine all that Origin rep talent to make one club called the Broncos.

Pethaps but the North Korean angle never gets enough popular exposure I feel. And that one is 100% Papi/Reg/SSTID. ;-)

Sports journo James Hooper just agreed with me Nobody has ever said that out loud and proud. It is kind of a dagger in any argument.

The NRL actually does have the power to stop a player from earning money in certain ways - Kalyn Ponga and Cameron Smith aren’t allowed to nip over to Japan to help out the Wallabies in the World Cup for instance.

That'll do me. A word for word quote from a New Idea, tabloid journo and you still get it wrong. His reference to North Korea was the imposition of overarching rule. Nothing at all to do with "run by". Hooper cites "several media outlets..." yeah, FOX and New Idea (DT). Hooper makes it up, yells the loudest over Kent and Buzz, you swallow it whole and then quote it word-for-word. If he doesn't blink at $25k, make it 25 weeks and let the game will move on without him. Here's one by Webster in the SMH "Sam Burgess needs to stop blaming everyone else but himself..." There is more fact in this story than Hooper has spun all year. https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/burgess-needs-to-stop-blaming-everyone-but-himself-20190918-p52sq4.html

Honestly, you two do my head in. At least I know you, PS, mostly intentionally take the p... where your buddy is just ignorant. Passionate but ignorant. Steveng, Greenberg is trying to protect the game from knuckle-heads like Burgess. He is a great player but and a liability all the same. He committed the crime, as incidental to the game itself as it was, he was not suspended for the hair-pull, he was suspended for multiple infringements, one of which is another head high tackle that concussed a bloke. They get their $Billions from TV by providing a good product and maintaining a good brand tat people want to watch. When Sam knocks someone's head off then comes out and disrespects his employers, he is damaging to the product and the brand. However, I know I'm wasting my time with you, your ignorance to a broader view is astounding and you'll never acknowledge anything that has souths painted in a dim light. PS, firstly I agree about Greenberg. I am not defending the way he has complicated many issues or bends to public pressure. Let's take that off the table. This argument has nothing to do with TPAs but be sure Sam wouldn't be back in the NRL if he wasn't receiving the lions share of the +$200k Souths get each year plus his extra 'benefits' from club patrons. He is not playing for the love of the game. However, it really is as simple as he committed several offences this year and both benefited from and fell too the inconsistency of the grading and judicial system. Then he mouths off and disrespects his boss. Right or wrong, that's never an argument he's going to win.

Drop a possible bucket of slander on the judiciary but no hurry to make Sam answer for his comments, don't interrupt his preparation this week. Come in anytime for a chat. Imagine having less stringent criteria for finals, I'll just get a lesser light to knock Keary out because he's got concussion form, bad old days would be back.

Gould is just tiring. I go for the Roosters but JWH had to miss the prelim there was no way round it. Is Gould that smart when it comes to the game of modern rugby league? He won 2 premierships yrs ago, have we just been duped by him and channel 9 telling all of us how smart he is.

Under the same argument Nat the NRL should have the same control over banning players from receiving TPA's just as some employers do not view an employee working a second job favourably and find a way to move them on. There is too much inconsistency and too many convenient excuses to explain away the blatant incompetence of Todd Greenberg. He needs to go!

Agree with you on Burgess. Playing Arm Chair Phycologist, his body language, his general contempt for the media, the establishment and his fellow players all seems to be trending in the wrong way. Perhaps there is something in his personal life effecting him - maybe it is just as simple as less sleep with two young kids, or maybe it goes back to the online incident with a woman from last year? Either way he is a less effective player now and a big part of the reason has to be his behaviour. Just on Gould. There is a great tweet doing the rounds at the moment showing an article Gould wrote a couple of months back about Tripping and how it should carry a min penalty of enough points to ensure a player misses at least a week. It then cuts to him this week outraged on TV that JWH is missing a game for tripping. Really is very good.

Yeah, overall Gould has done way more damage to the game with his remarks, but he has never (or at least rarely) crossed the line to the extent that Burgess just did.

Burgess I feel is struggling with not being the biggest baddest forward in the game. I think a few guys have gone past him and guys can now flatten him which a few yrs ago wasn't happening.

Sports journo James Hooper just agreed with me in saying that the game is run by North Koreans! It’s all rainbows and lollipops and jumping castles until someone says something too forthright and the North Korea rules get implemented. Bahahahahahaha    Todd Greenberg threatened Burgess with a $25k fine and a law suit. Big Sam didn’t flinch Quote: So will Burgess be apologising to the NRL judiciary or rugby league headquarters or whoever else he sprayed as he was shooting from the hip to the media on Tuesday morning? Negative. And why would he? The NRL’s match review committee and judiciary have consistently produced controversial decisions and debate all season. From Nelson Asofa-Solomona not being charged to Jake Trobjevic not missing one week to Martin Tapau only missing one week due to a careless grading to Burgess and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves being forced to miss finals matches due to minor offences. The solution has been a pineapple for 12 months since Billy Slater got off his shoulder charge in grand final week last year. Sam labelled it a “Kangaroo Court” and there’s a big majority in the game who agree. Several media outlets have hammered the process for the last 12 months now. Since when are NRL players’ banned from expressing an honest opinion? Because that’s all Sam’s guilty of here. https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/todd-greenberg-threatened-burgess-with-a-25k-fine-and-a-law-suit-big-sam-didnt-flinch/news-story/4f865a72b1b2f4b15578562afcd052ee Game, set and match! Greenberg is shown to be the the naked Emeror from "The Emperor's New Clothes" children's story! LOL

That proves how good a businessman you are and the NRL are! As that is what is going on, the NRL are kidding themselves if they think that getting billions from Ch9 or any future media outlet will be their kitty for the future or to keep RL alive! Let them continue on like they are!
