David Warner answers critics with Sheffield Shield century

By News / Wire

Test opener David Warner has posted his 29th first-class century after bouncing back to form in NSW’s Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland at the Gabba.

The Blues were 4-157 shortly after lunch on day two, with Warner unbeaten on 100 off 179 balls and Nick Bertus on 31.

Warner endured a disastrous Ashes campaign in which he averaged a meagre 9.5 with the bat.

But his form in his first match since the Ashes will be a huge relief for national selectors.

His innings has featured 13 boundaries, and the 103-run partnership with Bertus has lifted NSW into a position of strength.

Queensland were rolled for 153 on Thursday, with only Marnus Labuschagne (69) putting up any real resistance.

NSW’s reply started disastrously, with Steve Smith posting a rare duck and Daniel Hughes (6) and Moises Henriques (0) also failing as the Blues crashed to 3-14.

Warner’s rescue mission came at a perfect time – not only for NSW but also himself as he attempts to hold onto his Test spot.

The 32-year-old became the first batsman in Test history to be dismissed for single figures eight times during one series during a disastrous Ashes campaign.

It was also the lowest return for an opener playing all 10 innings in a five-Test series.

But Warner’s big knock against Queensland looks certain to secure his spot for the start of Australia’s Test summer, which gets underway against Pakistan in Brisbane on November 21.

Cricinfo states him as one. If you can show me your credentials, or provide me a link to your own detailed cricket database and archive that Wisden is partnered with, then yeah... I'll endorse your assessment of the role of Michael Neser. Until that time, he's an all rounder.

And the rest of the NSW team? Bertus got to 60 odd but he was also dropped twice on 1 and 24. The Gabba has been a low scoring wicket for all teams for awhile now.

And if he ends up outscoring the other candidates then it's pretty obvious what the selectors will do.

I never said he wasn't a lock. Of course he was. But people who are saying he's "back in form" are kidding themselves. He's merely "resuming his home town hero form". And in April next year he'll be straight back to "I am terrible overseas" form.

He was safe no matter what his Shield form was imho, lack of replacements and his record in Australia would get him in. Hopefully the flat tracker can keep it up when facing a quality bowling up. Batting difficulty on the Gabba overrated, Qld just not very good.

Batted on a wicket where only one player for Qld scored more than twenty, and only two players other than Warner scored more than twenty for NSW. I am not a great Warner fan, mainly over the ball scandal, however at least acknowledge it was a good innings. With the scores as they were it was a difficult wicket to bat on.

Where's the tests spruce. Oh there in Australia, where according to you he is fantastic. Locked himself in I would say.

He still looked very suss at one point when Gannon got the length right to him around the wicket. Edged a few just short of slip, played and missed at a fair few that he could have left alone. Gannon just couldn't keep the ball in the areas long enough. Still think better bowlers will do him over in the same way Broad did.

Lol come off it. Yes, Broad bowled well but Warner made the lowest amount of runs by in an opener in a 5 match series in the history of cricket. There is no excuse for that no matter how well Broad bowled.

Let’s all take a deep breathe and see how he goes in his next couple of digs. If he backs it up then he’s making a pretty reasonable case I would have thought.

I was going to press the "like" but I don't subscribe to the "Ronan is second-rate" bit. Agree with the rest.

Not many batsmen have succeeded in this game. He has.

Neser is not a all rounder. He is just an excellent bowler who bats very well...for a bowler.

His success never surprises me. He has been doing it for a long, long time.

True. If someone told you Warner was going to outscore Smith by 125 runs you’d think they were off their tree.

Broad bowled superbly to Warner in England full and moving off the seam. You have to be lucky to survive in those situations and he wasn’t. So Broad bowled poorly to the other batsman then? He saved the special stuff for Warner and just put the cue in the rack? That's what you are saying... You're an enabler, Simoc.

He's answered nothing. A Queensland attack where the only bowler with test match experience is Marnus Labuschagne, and is being led by a bowling allrounder? Someone who is in the eyes of the Australian selectors, less effective than Mitchell Marsh. We frequently fall victim to thinking all is right again with just one innings. We do it all the time with everyone, but particularly him. The same people who think he's answered his critics were the same people who thought his 61 in England was a sign he turned the corner, when in fact it was an aberration. No, answering his critics (like myself) will require more than just one century. It needs sustained form.

He wasn't out of form, Scott. He was decidedly playing to expectations in England - where, like most overseas locations he's terrible, and playing to expectations in Australia, where he's fantastic.

Warners a great batsman. His pathetic critics don't know a thing about cricket. Broad bowled superbly to Warner in England full and moving off the seam. You have to be lucky to survive in those situations and he wasn't. Naturally a run of outs tends to erode the confidence. The clueless ones dislike Warner the person; or are completely out of touch with cricket and once the stats they like making up suits their story, they run with that. Every business owner and media writer knows how to use statistics to create a story. The weak media writers do it all the time. Statistics are history. When you need them you don't know what's happening. Selectors use them to placate the second rate media (like Ronan) that survive by them.

For someone out of form it was a good knock for David Warner. The only one way to stop critics as Steve Smith has showed us in the Ashes is to score runs.
