ICC announces super over modifications

By News / Wire

The International Cricket Council has announced plans to change the rules of the super over which saw England win the World Cup on boundaries count are to be changed.

Eoin Morgan’s men secured a first World Cup triumph by the narrowest of all margins at Lord’s in July, when both sides had been tied at 241 runs following the regulation 50 overs.

England then went on to make 15 in their six-ball shoot-out, which was matched by New Zealand, meaning the hosts were crowned world champions after having scored more boundaries, fours and sixes, during the match.

The detail of the tie-break regulations – which had only occurred 11 times in international history and never before in a one-day international – drew some criticism.

Since events of the summer, the Big Bash tournament has amended the rules for their next competition.

On Monday, the world governing body also confirmed changes, which will now see any super over in a final repeated until one side has more runs.

“Following on from a recommendation from the ICC Cricket Committee, the Chief Executives’ Committee agreed that use of the super over as a way to decide results at ICC events will be retained,” an ICC statement read following a board meeting in Dubai.

“Both the Cricket Committee and CEC agreed it was an exciting and engaging conclusion to the game and will remain in place covering all games at both ODI and T20 World Cups.

“In group stages, if the Super Over is tied the match will be tied.

“In semi-finals and finals, there is one change to the super over regulation in keeping with the basic principle of scoring more runs than the opponent to win, the super over will be repeated until one team has more runs than the other.”

I wrote the above an hour after having an inguinal hernia op. As you could imagine l gave the nurses good copy. I said to one nurse, "You have the "eyes of truth, you must be a Scorpio!" ". She was!!!. Alas, l didn't get number. Being 30 years older will do that.

Your idea about extra overs has merit Randy, especially for 50 over games. Maybe a super over for T20's. As for the NRL, call me old fashioned, but I have no issues with two sides playing a draw, except in the finals. If however the powers that be want to break the dead lock, 5 minutes each way should be the way to go.

Whole heartedly agree. But it should be a logical thing. Why not take it to a meaningful resolution. An extra 5 overs with team batting first doin 5 overs with 4 bowlers, no fielding restrictions anxd a nominated bowler doing 1st and 5th overs. ---- NRL resolves drawn games in a a wholly unacceotable way be cause all of a suddem it's about who is good at slotting drop kicks and not football as tgey see it. It should bd based on thes pirit of the game.

Maybe, but someone must have come up with the idea in order for everyone else to agree to it. It's such a stupid way of deciding such an important tournament I still don't get, a) what fool thought it up and b) how they them convinced several other fools to go with the original idea?

The WC result was a farce and the ICC know it. Good on them for fixing it now but the way the WC einner was decided was a complete joke. Clearly, I'm still pretty upset about it. Muppets.

You always need some sort of tie-breaker. Used to be wickets lost. Then in the 99 World Cup it was who finished higher in the earlier stage because there were no super overs. I had no problem with England's win on the boundary countback. The wrong overthrow run though is another matter

I haven't read the new rule (not even sure they have written it). However, there are still more questions to be answered - including but not necessarily limited to: 1 what happens if the weather or the light becomes a factor during the super overs? 2 can bowlers bowl more than one super over? 3 can batsmen bat for more than one super over? 4 did they all fly to Dubai to discuss this or were there other matters on the agenda? PS I've decided I no longer want to be an Australian selector but would like to be a member of the Chief Executives Committee - sounds like a good job!

What I don't understand is why they came up with stupid interpretation that resulted in a farce at this years WC? This is clearly the simplest and best way to decide a short form game, so why go with, who scores the most boundaries, or what ever? Completely ridiculous.

A great first step. It needs to be made retrospective; with England in NZ in a couple of weeks, I suggest they play Super Overs to conclude the WC outcome prior to the start of play in the first iT20 in Christchurch. That would be a great marquee event to get the tour rolling.
