Broncos' David Fifita arrested in Bali

By News / Wire

Brisbane NRL star David Fifita has been arrested in Bali after an alleged brawl at the same nightclub Nelson Asofa-Solomona landed himself in trouble last month.

The Broncos on Saturday confirmed Fifita was in jail and have immediately flown an official to meet their key forward.

“The Brisbane Broncos have today been made aware that David Fifita has been detained by authorities in Bali after an alleged incident involving a security guard,” a Broncos statement read.

“The club is working with representatives in Bali to provide David all the support he needs, and a Broncos official is travelling to Indonesia today.”

The Seven Network reported Fifita, holidaying with NRL teammate Payne Haas, allegedly assaulted a security guard early on Saturday at La Favela nightclub.

It is the same nightspot where Melbourne’s Asofa-Solomona was involved in a wild brawl, which resulted in a three-game ban and a suspended $15,000 fine.

A police report obtained by Seven alleged the security guard was hit in the face by a foreigner who was riding a motorbike taxi.

“The perpetrator jumped from the motorbike and tried to approach the victim, but was prevented by ojek driver,” the police report reads.

“The victim felt pain in his face and made a report at Kuta police station.

“Based on report, police went to the crime scene, asking witnesses and the victim. A bule (foreigner) that was allegedly the perpetrator was arrested.

“The perpetrator was taken to Kuta police station for further investigation.

“The alleged perpetrator could not be interrogated yet as he is still under the influence of alcohol.”

It is understood Fifita can be detained for 24 hours before being named as a suspect or freed by police.

“So the alleged perpetrator was nabbed straight away and taken to the police station,” Kuta police chief Teuku Ricki Fadlianshah told the Seven Network.

“Witnesses said that he hit La Favela’s security. An ojek driver tried to separate them and he tried to hit the security again.

“It is still being investigated. Based on witnesses, the perpetrator spontaneously hit the security without any reason. But we are still facing difficulties to interrogate him.”

The NRL said they are aware of the incident.

“The integrity unit are working with the Brisbane Broncos and authorities to determine what has happened,” an NRL spokesperson told AAP.

The incident comes a fortnight after Fifita captained a Junior Kangaroos team to a win over France in Wollongong.

The 19-year-old is also set to enter the final year of his current contract, and is widely considered arguably the hottest free agent available for the 2021 season.

He has been linked with a number of rival clubs, including South Sydney.

Yes, I agree it would be unfair for the few that behave reasonably, but it would be for the greater good.

You tell them clip.Of course the players who do the right thing are not on your horizon. Just like all the players form your code, never put a foot wrong.

It's also cause they are celebrities in Bali thinks to the extraordinarily high amount of Australian bogans there. And the NRL they know they are celebrities there and seek to exploit it

Yet another example of why the NRL should enact H.G. Nelson's sage advise "keep the players in jail and allow them out for training and to play their games'

I think the difference is you took your family, whilst most who love it a younger singles/couples looking for a party holiday perhaps? Also, how did you contain your anger when the shopkeeper grabbed your young fella's arm. I would have completely lost my sh!t if that happened to my 9 year old. What a terrible experience, hope he got over it pretty quickly.

It is a s/hole I took the family in July this year...lovely hotel, lovely staff but as soon as you step outside the door it’s grotty and every person is trying to rip you off with every interaction You can’t walk down the street without without being constantly pestered. One shopkeeper grabbed my 9 year olds arm and tried to drag him into the shop...scared the hell out of him First morning we walked down to the beach to see a dog squeezing out a major. The beach is loaded with dogs, their filth and general rubbish. The water smells like raw sewerage We went on a couple of road trips and saw some relatively nice places but even cheap as chips isn’t worth it. I’m amazed it’s so popular a destination...never again for me

I've been to Bali many times, police corruption is rife and money can get you out of almost anything. For any sort of traffic infringement you can choose to get a ticket or pay the cops a lesser amount in cash on the spot, without a receipt of course. As I said, there is no way that Fifita will be charged.

Yep Bangkok and there are other places within Thailand other than Pattaya and Phuket. Anycase even in those places how many times have your heard of NRL players getting into this type of rubbish. You can get involved in brawls in pubs anywhere overseas if you you look the wrong way ,or knock over someone's drink. But that's not the point. Because Bali is closer and el cheapo, the multitude goes en masse. The warnings have been loud and clear for yonks about Bali not so in Thailand.

Have you been there? I loved it! And where is the almighty place you live? I do agree most people like myself as a young fella go to Bali as a great cheap holiday destination and if you like surfing it’s paradise. Why write it off when it has such beautiful, positive things as well.

You really don't get Bali, do you? Also, if the Broncos even could pay for his freedom, the Broncos will be savaged for it. It's a dangerously unethical thing to do.

Does that make him captaincy material alongside Matt Lodge?

Apparently Segeyaro has left the Broncos so it will be a choice between Fifita & Lodge for the captaincy role next year. At least David wasn't playing the pokies. Mathematical Formula: lots of money + Alcohol + Bali + No Brains = Potential Trouble. The Broncos "got Lodge out of trouble" in New York so this matter won't cost them as much. Nothing to see here!

Why oh why do they continue to go to Bali? If you want to hit the slops without getting decked or wanting to deck, there are other sunny places where the chances of saying hello to a magistrate are far less. Even the schoolies have now twigged, giving Bali and even now the Gold Coast the flickeroo, to go to Fiji,Hawaii or even Thailand. Bali tourism for males (who want to drink in abundance) is an accident waiting to happen. NRL clubs welfare officers should sit players down end season and spell out the realities of where the bad stuff is more likely to happen when taking a break.

I’m not on half a mill plus per year , and I wouldn’t want to go to that s/hole for a holiday, it’s got me buggered why these blokes go there when they could be in Hawaii or , so many other attractive places . Having said that , the Broncos officials my be on there way to Hawaii if that was the case . Meatheads .

Not really, no doubt the Broncos official who is being rushed over there brought the cheque book with him. No charges will be laid and the whole thing will blow over quietly.
