Dragons confirm Issac Luke signing for 2020

By News / Wire

St George Illawarra have confirmed the signing of Issac Luke on a one-year NRL deal.

The Dragons have signed the former New Zealand international, who has amassed 271 NRL matches for South Sydney and the Warriors, for the 2020 season.

“Everyone is already aware of Issac’s career in regard to his longevity,” director of rugby league pathways and list management Ian Millward said.

“Issac has walked the path of the NRL over a long period of time now and will be great for our squad.”

The 32-year-old Luke links up with the Dragons after four years with the Warriors, and will likely serve as dummy-half back-up for Cameron McInnes.

Luke and McInnes previously played together at the Rabbitohs in 2014 and 2015.

On Sunday, Luke tweeted that he was bound for the Saints.

“St George Dragons. On way,” he wrote.

Luke’s arrival at the Dragons will cover the loss of Reece Robson, who is moving to North Queensland.

Luke has played 43 Tests for the Kiwis, including the 2008 World Cup final win over Australia.

For me, a club’s recruitment strategy is missing when they start signing players that the Warriors reject!

Ravalawa would definitely be a handful for those who defend either side of him, having to make up for all his missed tackles. Although I'll admit there is one positive to him moving to the centres - he won't be under the high ball anywhere near as much as he is on the wing, and Ravalawa is an absolute disaster under the high ball.

Signing this bloke and losing some of the young guns is a sign of the problems the club has. Won't change under Mary.

Robson wasn't given a chance to prove himself. Good idea comparing someone who plays every game to someone who played maybe 5. Robson is a lot faster out of dummy half and would provide more spark. Not knocking McInness who is a fantastic player but I thought keeping Robson and using him off the bench would have been a better option. I stand by my Ravilawa idea he would be a handful in the centres.

hahaha. "Not even close. Keep trying" from the bloke who wants Ravalawa in the centres? That's a little bit McGregor calling the kettle incompetent wouldn't you say? I'm curious though, what is it you see in Robson that I don't? Is it the topping of the tackle count each week? THAT charge down against the Rabbitohs? THAT try-saver against the Sharks? How about the almost 1300m run (about 200 more than Cook)? Oh wait. That's all McInnes. Keep trying mate

He should be good for giving away a few crucial match-losing penalties in the dying minutes.

I'd have him just behind Cook, but I think Robson would in time, prove to be a better hooker as he provides more of a threat. McInnes provides solid service without being overly threatening and has plenty of ticker. I'm not undermining his position but I feel Robson should have been signed long term and move McInness to lock.

Don't disagree with that, but you seem to be trying to undermine the impact of McInnes, when most good judges would have him as top five in his position at the worst.

This is a terrible mistake by Saints. Signing Isaac Luke is akin to the Wayne Bennett days in Newcastle when he signed over 30's like Craig Gower and Jeremy Smith to name a couple. Desperation move looking for instant results. Like Bennett, McGregor appears gun shy of promoting juniors with the likes of Rueben Garrick leaving, Zac Lomax given permission to probe the market, Tristan Sailor unsigned at last report among the ignoring of local talent. Even the Mundine youngster has gone to Souths which pleases me to see Saints purge the last remnants of Mundine DNA from the club. Surely the management at Saints can see McGregor is the wrong fit for the club. As a life long Saints supporter it saddens me to see what's happening there now. No wonder Brian Johnston is leaving.

Not yet. I think in future years the Dragons will rue letting him go

McInnes is, in my opinion, the fourth-best hooker in the game. Robson ain't in the same class as him.

OMG what is going on at the Dragons why would they want Luke for he's passed it big time. Let him stay in New Zealand with all his family and relatives or retire he has nothing to give the Dragons at all an absolute stupid buy. He will be the same type of a buy as when they got Benji Marshall the number 1 most overrated player i've ever seen, while at the Dragons he lost us more games with his many mistakes, and i think they are making same mistake now also.

I think you are probably correct KenW. You would have to think that Luke would only get a game in the Dragons NRL team when the 80 minute McInnes was out injured / suspended. Keeping a youngster from ever developing under this scenario would be cruel. Twilighter Luke fits the bill, if he comes cheap enough, just for such replacement duties.

The way I see it we'd have slightly weakened the hooker position, and significantly weakened the lock position... I think McInnes is a great player in his position, but any team playing him as a first choice 13 has a squad problem.

This is a terrible signing. No disrespect to Luke but he’s the last thing we need right now. We have Joe Lovodua, the Fijian hooker. He’s young, quick and has plenty of flair. He certainly needs to refine aspects of his game like his consistency, pinpoint passing and tackle efficiency, but he’d also be the perfect candidate to break a game open at the back end of a half - kind of like what issac Luke was 7 year ago.

Robson is not fit to lace Cameron McInnes’s boots. Sloppy passing, missed tackles - good riddance to him.

This is an idiotic signing Scott. More proof that our SuperCoach has no idea what he’s doing. In what world is signing an inferior hooker so that our top hooker, captain and best player can spend more time out of position a good idea?
