Wighton signs four-year extension with Raiders

Clive Churchill Medal winner Jack Wighton has re-signed with Canberra until the end of the 2024 NRL season.

Canberra’s premiership window is wide open with star Jack Wighton re-signing until the end of the 2024 NRL season.

Wighton won the Clive Churchill Medal in the Raiders’ grand final defeat last year, before earning Australia honours for the first time.

The 27-year-old has only played for the Raiders and lit up the NRL in 2019 after switching from fullback to five-eighth, while also making his State of Origin debut for NSW at centre.

Wighton’s four-year deal is reportedly worth more than $3 million and the versatile playmaker knocked back higher offers from rival clubs.

He’ll partner England international recruit George Williams in the halves after Aidan Sezer was released to join Super League club Huddersfield.

Joey Leilua (Wests Tigers) and Jordan Rapana (rugby union) were the only other Raiders starters to depart since the grand final.

Canberra also signed highly-touted Curtis Scott but his future remains uncertain as the former Melbourne centre fights police charges laid against him last month.

The Raiders are still in negotiations with co-captain Jarrod Croker and NSW and Australian centre Nick Cotric, who are off contract at the end of the season.

Canberra open their season at home against Gold Coast on March 13.

There you go, I tend to agree (without all the guff you put around it). $3m over 4yrs - $750k pa seems fair based on last year but there's 7yrs of average before that. Remember when Austin had that one good season and his form fell off a cliff the following year when the opposing teams worked him out? Plus 4yrs at 27yo? That's anther risk IMO. He definitely deserved an upgrade, the money is fair enough but it's long.

I must say I am a little suprised but good for him and for the Raiders. I did like his little faux par in his press conference where he said he wants to be a "one man club", as opposed to a one club man.. :silly:

Nicely done! Finally raiders get to keep a bad boy on the straight and narrow and in the club, Ricky Stuart take a bow! Just off topic but I just read an article about Meninga a saying he will definitely keep Arrow at Titans for 2020 because they need him. What caught my eye when confronted with criticism about losing Arrow to the bunnies, he was quoted as saying that they couldn’t afford to pay overs for him and match the bunnies offer!! Mals official role is head of culture at Titans... ummm yeah nice one Mal!

Jack "White-out" is still overrated in my book. One Clive Churchill medal doesn't make up for the intercept pass he threw in Origin and for his poor or inconsistent form over the last few years. No amount of liquid paper can correct "White-out's" mistakes both on and off the field. How much fish for a swish delish dish should Papi catch, if Papi could catch fish?

Good work Raiders. I would hate Wrighton to go elsewhere.

Massive coup for the Raiders to resign Jack for another 4 years. He will be the focal point of their attack going forward and as important to their premiership chances as Daley was in in the late 80's & 90's.
