Young gun Cameron Green stars for Western Australia with unbeaten ton

By News / Wire

Young talent Cameron Green has powered to his highest first-class score as Western Australia frustrated Tasmania with the bat early on day two of their Sheffield Shield match.

Green, who brought up his third century of the season late on Monday, was unbeaten on 158 as WA were all out for 371 in their first innings.

The 20-year-old prodigy, touted by many as Australia’s long-term Test allrounder, struck 19 fours and two sixes in the mature 283-ball knock.

Green’s score eclipsed his 126 against South Australia and unbeaten 121 against Queensland from earlier this summer.

He has 617 runs for WA this season, the second most, at an average of 77.12.

In reply, Tasmania survived half an hour to reach 0-13 at lunch.

Green resumed on Tuesday in Hobart on 105 and with WA at 6-291 but he quickly lost partner Joel Paris (10) to Shield debutant Nathan Ellis, who finished with 3-120.

Tigers’ quick Sam Rainbird picked up two tail-end scalps, including a stubborn Matthew Kelly (20), and was the pick of the quicks with 5-77.

Batting at No.5, Green stabilised WA on day one after they fell to 3-43 having been sent in on a Bellerive Oval green top.

He shared a century stand with fellow young talent Josh Philippe, who was the next best for the Warriors with 63.

Green sprung to prominence as a 17-year-old in 2017 when he took 5-25 against Tasmania on debut in the Shield but he hasn’t bowled in recent months due a stress fracture in his back.

No one was referring to an article on Webster. The article on Green was full of praise. I just pointed out Webster's effort was superior. Am I not allowed to make such a comment.

So, the comment you want to make is on the Webster article.

The article was written before Webster's effort. The article said Green starred for WA. Webster won the game for Tassie, so I cannot comment on that fact. And believe it or not I can read.

The article is not about Webster. Look at the headline if the article's too long for you.

You come up with funny assertions. Who is setting one against the other ? You were praising Green for his efforts. I pointed out Webster won the game for Tasmania. A brilliant 187 off 187 balls to give Tassie first innings points, and belting them home with seven balls to spare. Brilliant performance. Do you acknowledge that ?

Do you think there would be a different appreciation? You seem to want to set one against the other.

Nobody denied it was a "feelgood effort". Just pointing out his behavior on being given out. Not a good look for a 20yo. If Green was very good, how would you describe Beau Webster's performance, setting up a win with his 187 in the first innings, and hitting two big six's to win the game with a few balls to spare.. Can bowl as well, next allrounder for Australia !!!!!!

Sad to see you are both unable to share the sentiment that a 20yo kid who has just scored over 200 runs in a game in difficult circumstances is worth acknowledging. It would seem impressive to me that a kid who has achieved like that is frustrated at his dismissal rather than being self-satisfied. You accept it from Handscomb, Paine, Smith, Wade...but when a kid does it, you want the book thrown at him. Strangely, you have no problem with directing nastiness at Green. Standards for him but not for yourselves? Show some sportsmanship. It was such a feelgood effort.

I don't know if you are aware of the sequence, Ben, but Shield cricket does precede International cricket.

Imran averaged over 50 with the bat in the second half of his career. He absolutely would have been picked for either discipline. Other than that, Shakib al Hasan?

with the general on this one. there must be a report or penalty for that childish performance. labuschagne and a few others have been pushing the limit on this recently and it should be quashed

And when Green was bowling, he was batting at 8 or 9.

Yes his performances are doing the talking for him. So his his petulant performance standing at the crease for 8 seconds and shaking his head non stop when given out in the second innings.

2020-02-26T07:06:03+00:00

Lets wait and see until he gets to the international arena yeah? hes played all of a dozen first class games, wait for him to play 25-30 and if his performances/stats are just as good, then pick him. But not before.

Yep re the attack and it looks a bit like a "new ball" game where once your in runs come a bit easier. Great effort from Green but he's been trumped by a 187 at a run a ball from Beau Webster! Batting at 7!

Top score in the matches where he did substantial bowling was 45. Has only made big scores since he stopped bowling. So still an open question whether he can perform at a high level trying to do both.

Not exactly the toughest attack (Rainbird, Ellis, Bell, Milenko??) but showed again he could perform when the side was under real pressure (as he did last year when scoring a ton when WA were 7/53 vs Qld). But for all the all-rounder talk, worth noting he hasn’t made any big scores in matches where he has done substantial bowling.

Decent lower order batsman, that’s all. Had a Test average under 25. But agree with your overall conclusion.
