Bulldogs duo sacked for schoolgirl scandal

By Pamela Whaley / Wire

Canterbury players Jayden Okunbor and Corey Harawira-Naera have been deregistered by the NRL after it was revealed the pair had sex with teenage schoolgirls on a team trip to Port Macquarie in February.

The behaviour of the pair was labelled “inexcusable” in statements released by the NRL and the Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon, with the club saying they supported the game’s decision.

“The conduct of the two players, on the eve of our final trial match, demonstrated an unacceptable lack of respect for their teammates, their coach and club officials, our hosts in Port Macquarie and fans of the game everywhere,” the Bulldogs’ statement read.

They didn't break the law see there was no cops involved and They got to play all of the years comp anyway before they got punished so not even a slap on the wrist, or butt

Moose: legality aside , we would consider a teacher taking advantage of an student abhorrent and that is the point I was making. these blokes took advantage of the trusted position they were in. Technically not illegal but morally so. Wisdom is not a gift. It comes from making mistakes and learning from them, I just hope theses two blokes learn from this mistake and get a second chance. Lodge did and what he did was actually a lot worse than a consensual nookie

Agree. Although it is slightly different than the analogy you raised because that particular activity is illegal.

If you earn your primary source of income from doing an activity it is a profession. It may be performed for the purpose of our entertainment but that doesn't make it a recreational activity. However, I feel you are going to stand on your moral soapbox with no objectivity. You don't have to condone what they did to accept people make dumb mistakes.

So many are missing the point. It is true that no charges were laid and it appears that it was consensual and I am sure both parties thoroughly enjoyed themselves, however they were there at the school representing their club and the NRL to promote the game not their own sex lives. They were therefore in breach of club ethical standards. Is this any different to a teacher having sex with a student?

No it's still very much a recreational activity, just at a professional capacity. They make the decision to invest enough time into this to make it their career, that's their decision. As is stepping into the public spotlight and the responsibilities it carries. A brickie? Or a bus driver perhaps?

The outcome was never going to be any different. There is a standard of ethical behaviour expected when you are representing your employer and they both failed miserably in upholding the standard expected of them.

So why didn’t they delete the photos and notify the school so the school could alert the parents to the fact their daughters were sending nude photos of themselves, or is that just what a normal person would do? What has an 18 year old having sex with his girlfriend got to do with this? These weren’t 18 year olds who randomly met and were in a relationship, they were significantly older men who gained access to these girls because they were invited into a school. If you can’t see the difference between those two situations then I’m not sure what to say. As far as being out of touch goes, maybe have a look at the overriding sentiments in this comments section and consider who’s out of touch.

Instagram, no phone number required.....goes to show you're not even aware of the details of this case, and you're so out of touch with what's happening today you think you need a phone number to contact someone.......As I said above, do you have an issue with an 18yo male (aka a grown man) having sex with his 17yo girlfriend who may be a month younger than him?

How did they send them nude photos? I’m assuming they did it over the phone so the players must have given them their numbers in the first place! Did they hand out their phone numbers to all the kids or just the ones they picked out?

Well that’s the thing about teenagers isn’t it, they tend to do stupid things. That’s why it’s up to the adults to not take advantage when they do. Do you honestly not understand this, or it’s just ‘game on’ in your view?

Seriously how useless a grown man do you have to be to not be able to resist the advances of literal children.

Or you could tell your daughter not to make advances and send nude photos to people visiting the school?

Sorry but if my daughter's school invites people in to talk to the students I'm expecting them to somehow resist the advances of student in their school uniforms.

Yeah I'm with Sam on this one, I assume most of you think it's ok for an 18yo male to have sex with his 17yo girlfriend? Legally speaking he's a man and shes a child. How about if he was 19yo? Still ok? What about if he's 20, 21, 22, 23, or 24? At what point do you guys think it's not ok? And whatever you answer that's only going to be your personal opinion, the LAW states that a 17yo is free to have sex with whoever she wants, whether hes 17, 18, or 80, the choice is hers. Kobe Bryant was in his third year of the NBA and met his wife when she was still in highschool, he used to bombard the school with flowers everyday. The NBA didn't bat an eyelid and here we have the NRL deregistering players for doing the same thing.

"The age of consent laws aren’t meant to make it okay for adults to have sex with children". Um, that's exactly what the law is for, otherwise the age of consent would be raised to 18. That's why it's perfectly legal for the players to do what they did, the only rule they broke is bringing somebody back to the hotel room. Plenty of players have done worse things, things that are actually ILLEGAL, and are still playing. These guys are the only players in NRL history to be deregistered without ever committing a crime, I would have thought a fine and/or suspension for breaking team rules would have sufficed.

I'm really sorry I upset people. I never intended to accuse anyone of anything. I was just asking a question of what constitutes reasonable grounds for a sponsor to terminate an agreement. It was a question not an accusation. Sorry.

Sam I think you need to have a long hard think about why it seems so important to you to defend adult men who had sex with children. Because that's what these girls are. Regardless of age of consent, if they're under 18 then legally, morally, physically, they're children. If teenagers want to have sex with other teenagers, fine. The age of consent laws aren't meant to make it okay for adults to have sex with children. And it's irrelevant whether the girls - not "females" as you call them, but girls - made advances on the players or not because, you guessed it, they're CHILDREN.
