No Test rugby in 2020 a “possibility”

By News / Wire

Sir Bill Beaumont believes it is a “distinct possibility” the international rugby calendar could be scrapped this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Beaumont is chairman of World Rugby, which on Thursday announced it was providing a $157 million relief fund to aid national unions through the crisis.

The organisation is also exploring a way to return to playing and finishing the 2020 international calendar but the current global uncertainty led Beaumont to concede it may not be possible to hold any more fixtures this year.

Sports opinion delivered daily

“That is a distinct possibility,” Beaumont told The Times.

“The pressures on the unions are getting greater and greater.”

Beaumont is standing for re-election as chairman of World Rugby but next month’s elections will see him go up against vice-chairman Agustin Pichot.

The former Grand Slam-winning England captain’s bid for a second four-year term took a hit when former teammate Sir Clive Woodward backed the ex-Argentina skipper.

Woodward’s assertion that “rugby would benefit from being viewed through the eyes of leader who is 45, not 68” rankled with Beaumont, who said: “What difference does the age make?

“I played my rugby always as an amateur. Does that mean I don’t understand the professional game?

“I am evolution, not revolution. I am bidding to show a lead to colleagues, to take colleagues with me. I intend to be a leader. And I think I have been in the past.”

Beaumont’s running partner Bernard Laporte last week floated the idea of a yearly Club World Cup, an idea that could be the death knell for the Heineken Champions Cup.

However, Beaumont added: “It was a misunderstanding. What I can see is a Club World Championship, but not an annual basis. That is the way we both look upon it.”

I disagree a little. You don't just need it gone from your country. You need it gone from those you are traveling to and from. Importantly you need to align with where you travel. It's not good opening borders to a country that has eradicated it if their borders to USA remain open. I think we will see the Aus/NZ border open up pretty early. From there Aus and NZ will potentially open up to other nations with similar situations.

thing is ur not just needing it ot be gone from your society. oz could be covid 19 free for a long time before they allow international travel to start again.

yes atm re-opening Aus/NZ travel is seemingly no riskier than re-opening Qld/NSW travel (except with Kiwis, Qld would get a better class of visitor ...)

A week ago you were criticising the Morrison government and lauding Adern's handling of the crisis. Now you're proposing a new super rugby structure based on the almost identical success of both countries policies. What a difference a week can make!

With Australia and NZ Caronavirus seeming to flattern it is conceivable that rugby between both countries Super Teams and national teams could occur. They could start off playing super rugby with just games within each conference and then between conferences as the borders between the two countries are opened. I cannot see why Oz and NZ cannot provide a united border to the rest of the world and allow free movement between the two countries later in the year. This would allow many of our sports which involve teams in both countries to start again.

I think rapid testing could also enable it. Apparently Emirates are conducting 10 minute pin prick tests. But without reliable rapid test, or vaccines, it seems unlikely. I’m sure some international travel will open up. But only between countries with similar results and similar approaches.

Beaumont has had four years in the top job and the game was still in financial dire straits and Pasifika players still missed the World Cup because of club pressures, even before the virus. That's not evolution, it's stasis!

I believe it's a distinct probability we will not see any international sport at all in 2020..yes we hear about the virus curve flattening out, we see thankfully death rates dropping but what we are not seeing is an elimination of the virus.. As soon as societies open up to some kind of normality surely logic dictates that the increased contact will again lead to increased infections.. Until 1 or 2 things happen... Either a vaccine is developed and rolled out globally or the World accepts the reality of living with the virus which it hasn't yet, then cross border sport cannot happen.
