NRL players to undergo environment checks

By News / Wire

NRL players and staff will be subject to environment checks as well as a number of strict protocols laid out in an extensive biosecurity document sent to clubs on Sunday night.

The 48-page draft document outlined a list of health and safety measures for clubs to abide by to return to training on May 4.

As the NRL charges towards a May 28 restart, clubs will be required to register a maximum of 50 players and staff to gain access to training and games – all of whom will need to have their environments approved.

An identified risk is believed to require the player or staff member to find alternative accommodation.

Other guidelines include temperature checks, daily cleaning of equipment, single access to venues and isolation for players in their homes except for travelling to training, playing, doctor’s visits or essential food shopping.

Also proposed are restrictions on training in public spaces outside of the club environment, and a ban on using public transport, taxis and car sharing.

The NRL has already warned any breach of the health and safety measures will carry strict penalties, which is understood to include loss of competition points and fines.

The NRL is also looking at appointing an independent “spy” to make sure teams are abiding by protocols.

While details are yet to be finalised, the NRL believes the new protocols will be more stringent than government restrictions.

Clubs will now have five business days to organise equipment and staff to meet the strict guidelines.

The RLPA and club bosses will meet on Monday afternoon to give their feedback to the guidelines before they are approved.

Meanwhile, the NRL will work with the RLPA to determine whether the Australian Government’s coronavirus contact app will form part of the game’s biosecurity framework sent to clubs.

The controversial app was launched on Sunday for Australians to download and trace whether they had come in contact with a confirmed coronavirus case.

And while there are concerns over privacy and data storage, the NRL threw its support behind the technology and vowed to support and promote it.

“This app is a simple, genius idea that can help protect public health and eradicate the virus,” said ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys.

“We absolutely believe in the importance of the community health message and are proud to work with the government to promote it far and wide.

“Right from the start of this pandemic we acknowledged the important role our sport, and the role models in our game, can play in helping authorities get important messages to the public so we can beat this virus.”

The app relies on bluetooth technology and will track contact with other users who are within 1.5 metres for more than 15 minutes.

I just assumed that the 'environment' checks were working out a way of protecting whatever environment they chose from the players themselves. I'm pretty sure Coffs Harbour won't want them.

Paul, that's a good point about being personal choice. It's not a given every player will want to leave his Family and some have already indicated that. So far the isolation for some players has been working and the last incident indicates some completely ignore it, yet were asking some interstate players to be away for up to four months and locals are allowed to travel freely to their wives, girlfriends or both. This weekend's incident may change the minds of some players . It's a bit of a catch 22. If all clubs are put into a bubble in NSW the locals may complain . I'd like to see all in or none because isolating 400-500 players plus coaches and ancillary staff will be very difficult to control.

What's the new NRL motto. " Stand as One" It doesn't look that way.

I read your post and it was a good one. I'll concede that maybe "the season" could be a stretch but these guys need to be made an example of. As you point out, the most fortunate thing is another 4 weeks so they can adhere to ISO (if required) before resumption. I stand by the risk aspect though. Directly to their own friends, family and community by bringing a bunch of blokes from different areas together, albeit with lower infection rates these days, is a huge risk. The risk to the game though? I can't imagine a submission by the NRL that doesn't account for 'human error' which is a fine policy until a player/s puts it under the microscope. It 'feels' like the NRL have the Poli's on board but it the health officials that they need a Yes from. IMO, this is a big reason for them to say No.

and fair enough, but these guys haven't done that. As far as I'm aware, there's no talk from the NSW Gov't of the NRL being stopped from continuing with their plans to restart the season. Yes their actions were stupid, but as I posted elsewhere, there could be a silver lining for the NRL. They can make it clear, through punishments, etc, exactly what could happen to others if this happens after the 28th of May. I'd suggest though, a ban for this season would not go down well with the RLPA and the NRL needs them onside, at least for the next month.

I would like to think my family wouldn't put at risk anyone else let alone their own employment. If I had an employee derail my company in trying to get restarted then they would be looking for new employment.

Would that be their city 'home' or the home away from covid-19 restrictions down on the farm. Guess those killjoy cops don't have an answer to the classic statement "don't you know who I am". Lot of professional sportsmen live in that bubble. AFL opened the contest with a drunken crash into 4 parked cars but true to form, the NRL saw that effort & raised with 2 NSW SoO backs breaching lockdown, social isolation rules & bragging about it on Insta. Rule them out of origin selection I reckon, that's fair to maroon eyes. But seriously, dumb effort but not as bad as that idiot repatriated from overseas who was in 14 day isolation but snuck out of his hotel 3 times to see his girlfriend, I do have some perspective. Think he got remanded without bail & might just be in a bit of trouble.

Yup. Sure. But it takes just ONE person to kick start a virus again.

I hope the NRL posts the final biosecurity document on its website, when the final version is approved. It would handy to know exactly what Clubs are going to be asked to do. I also hope the NRL don't make the tracking app compulsory or a part of the biosecurity framework. These people are going to be in serious lockdown by the sounds of it anyway and if a player doesn't approve of the app for what ever reason, it should not impact their right to play, assuming they're selected. I also suggest trying to force all Clubs to get on board could see the NRL in court, if a person refuses. Better to publicly support it but allow players to make a choice, the same as the rest of Australia.

so Nat, if a member of your family did something similar, you'd have no issues with that person being stood down from their job without pay for 6 months?

so if they were working in any other capacity and did the same thing, you'd suggest they should lose their jobs effectively? I'll bet the RLPA will have plenty to say about that, if it happens.

be careful SM. Yes two guys appear to have erred, but should all the rest be tarred with the same brush, so to speak?

The concerns for me all along about kicking off the season again have been. 1) players especially young, bullet proof, overpaid males don't make smart choices and quarantining them is impossible without an Island or a safe lockdown location. 2) The NRL is intent on playing the comp. in Sydney where the infections of Covid-19 is highest? It's a high risk recipe no matter how many pages you have in a document. It will take some of these boys years to comprehend how to not give up a dumb penalty. Social distancing must seem like rocket science. The players can't understand socially acceptable requirements at the best of times. Hopefully the virus is gone by kick off date.

If the two players were Cherry Evans and James Tedesco you’d have a case, but it was Mitchell and Ado Carr for goodness sake, the contemporary equivalent of Dugan and Carney. Agree with your punishment though.

Sit them both out for the season. They've shown no regard for anyone but most of all the Tarree community where infection is exponentially more dangerous to the Indigenous community. At the moment it is one rule for all and the BS "cultural" card doesn't fly.

Latrell Mitchell and Josh Ado Carr. Proof positive that no brains or societal standards are required to be a rugby league player. Proof positive rugby league as a sport in Australia does not have the human capability to continuously meet whatever health and safety guidelines are put into place to enable a restart of the NRL season. All talk by an administration that is financially strapped, but without the capability to execute a plan because the players have no self control or ethics. If the NRL is to restart, they should first confirm that these two player and any others found to breach health regulations will be stood down without pay for the whole season.

The environment situation is very apt. The NSW environment is completely different to other state's. We have more cases (nearly 40%) more deaths so NSW restrictions should be more stringent than other states and should be the last state to lift any restrictions . Bringing players from NZ and other states puts them at a greater risk.
