UPDATE: Cleary set to be fined by police over social distancing breach

By Matt Encarnacion / Wire

Penrith star Nathan Cleary is set to be fined by NSW police for allegedly breaching social distancing laws that resulted in his severe sanction by the NRL.

Cleary was originally cleared by police of breaking coronavirus restrictions when he was photographed with friends at his house.

Five women received $1000 police fines for flouting government protocols.

However, after video emerged of Cleary in TikTok videos with the same group, the NRL slapped him with a two-game ban and $30,000 fine for being “untruthful” in dealings with the integrity unit.

Cleary originally received a $10,000 fine, 60 per cent suspended, as well as a suspended one-match ban after initial league investigations.

It has since been alleged the Panthers halfback had left his home during the day in question in contravention of the state’s COVID-19 measures.

That has prompted NSW police to interview Cleary again on Wednesday.

“We are looking at it,” detective inspector Jason Pietruszka told AAP.

“We’re reviewing his original information and we’ll be speaking with him later on today.

“And if that information is found to be false, then he’ll be issued with a ticket as per the health order.

“We’ll treat it for what it is and he’ll be given a ticket.”

Panthers teammate and Cleary’s housemate, Tyrone May, was fined $15,000 by the NRL for his role during the league’s investigation.

Penrith had hoped to put the saga behind them after accepting the NRL punishments for both players on Tuesday.

Coach Ivan Cleary, the father of Nathan, said it was out of character for his son, who has had an unblemished record off the field since his debut in 2016.

“He is very remorseful and he’s paying the price,” Cleary told the club’s website.

“I actually think it could be the making of him, I really do. He’s still a young man.

“He knows he’s done the wrong thing and he’s hurt people.

“In my experience, sometimes the best leadership lessons are done through practising the hard way.”

Not sure JT changed to much. Just ask Ethan Lowe. The media and marketing is the biggest trajectory changer in the game. If the media wants you to be a hero they can paint the picture. If they want to paint you in a bad light they can do that as well. The manger who keeps the lights off when the trouble is happening and paying the right pockets is earning his commission. JT was lucky he was away from the Sydney media for much off his career.

Can Addo Carr use the excuse that he is stupid & his "brain" is the equivalent of that of a goldfish. Apologies to all goldfish out there.

Thanks for your advice moose ! I am well aware of current laws. If you are happy to accept them, then you go ahead and enjoy your totalitarian existence. But just hope you don't become the next target for authorities due to your unwelcome comments as assessed by some dictator or idealogue.

I’m guessing you’re including others whos “actions could have potentially led to the death/s of other people” to be banned for the season also ?

We should cut him some slack. I don't think ppl would have made as big a deal about this if he wasn't indigenous. He had some friends over. Big deal. Lets move on

Big Daddy, I'd agree in principle, but you could also argue you've contradicted yourself too. "Don't want to be treated like the rest of the community". He (JAC) was given a $1,000 fine, like the "rest of the community" would have, and an additional $20,000 fine payable now, with the potential for an additional $30,000 by the NRL. That said, I only noted that to provide a different perspective, and not one I'd aspouce to in this case. More broadly, some guys just don't get it. They just won't/can't/haven't adjusted to the bigger picture, or (in a single case at least) are trying to capitalise on it. I added that (the different perspective) comment because I think some of the players that are (maybe half) involved in these incidents could/should do the same. BC, what are you currently being paid, and is it appropriate? DW, other people's rights, hmmmmmmmmm? "Cultural gatherings", Australia's more broadly recognised ANZAC day in a very different way this year. Social media, could it be better utilised? Anyway, my 5 cents worth.

At least he's copping it on the chin unlike Addo Carr who is going to fight his police charge and also his NRL fine and sanction. These guys are such primma Donna's and don't want to be treated like the rest of the community.

Serious business I agree, it’s become quite obvious to me that there is no other option than to microchip young Cleary and others of his disobedient ilk. And if his unruly behaviour continues, a frontal lobotomy will surely cure his desire to ramble.

Albo, In future, please only post if you have some inkling as to what the current laws are. It was plainly clear at that point in time you could only leave for a prescribed list of reasons. Perhaps Cleary did - the police will determine that. Otherwise, silence is your friend.

His dad says he is remorseful. Sorry for being caught, breaking the rules, being stupid or all of the above. He should be fined another bucketload for posting it on social media.

Depending on what exactly Cleary was thought by the cops to have done, i more or less agree with most of what you have said. However in regards to the Haas comparison i think Cleary is the worst of the two. Why should Haas give a statement about the actions of his family to the NRL integrity unit? Regardless of what they have done they arent contracted to the Nrl and as such he has every right to tell them to mind their own business.

Dad says he is "remorseful". Many people who claim that they are remorseful not only can't spell the word they probably don't know what it means. What happened to the millennials excuse "error of judgement"? Ivan should have said "Nathan's a good boy. Makes his bed & feeds the dog". He'll have to come up with a better excuse. Unfortunately he can't use Mitchell & Addo Carr's.

The most recent story is he allegedly picked the girls up and brought them back to his house. Under the current restrictions, that is not allowed. Going to Bunnings is.

Why are the Police even involved ? What was the 'incident' that warranted a Police investigation ? So seems he left his house on Anzac Day. So did I . And I am of "that" age ! Have you seen the crowds at Bunnings each weekend or the 40,000 at the Fish Markets on Good Friday ? When will I expect a bang on the door from these State minders ? Strewth ! Am I being monitored on this blog ? If you don't hear from me by tomorrow , please check this post box.............

I think the bigger issue that most people and the media has with Cleary at the moment is the fact that he lied to the integrity unity and was dad dancing on Tik Tok
