It’s been reported GI will get, I almost wrote earn, 600k for his one season stint in England. Good money for a retiree. It says a lot about the standard of Super League if they are keen on a soon to be 34 yo with bunged up knees. It says a lot also about Kevin Walters saying Greg would be considered for SOO if his form warranted it. Boxing used to be the sport where some would say a fighter went one fight too many and disgraced themselves. Let’s hope Inglis plays well so as not to tarnish his legacy.

Rabbitohs back Greg Inglis' rugby league return

This is a case of power in the wrong hands. Referees as well as coaches are employees in the entertainment industry, an industry that relies many sets of eyes to be successful. If people don’t watch the game then there is no game. No game means players earning 100’s of thousands per year will reap less than that, much more than that. Referees will most probably get a job at Bunnings, coaches as stand up comedians etc, etc. Refs and coaches are given a job sheet and are expected to fulfil their duties providing a spectacle to the viewing public. Sometimes, some people think they are bigger than the game itself.

Referees won't strike after Fair Work discussions stall

No concerns there, playing in March is no different to late October. In October 2018 I had my log fire burning right up til the third week so it’s not too hot then.

Should the grand final return to the afternoon?

Scheduled 3pm kickoff for sure. It’s too easy to get to a state where your vision is blurred courtesy of a grog or two with a 7.30KO. While they are at it they should cut out all the music that’s served up as entertainment. It’s a footy day not a pop concert. The schedule for the day is stretched out too much with an hour between games on the day. If they want to have fillers between games then get some kids’ teams on for some exposure on the big stage, they’d love it and talk about it for years to come.

Should the grand final return to the afternoon?

Cooper Cronk knows a lot more about footy tactics than me so I won’t disregard what he says. If that becomes the way teams play, attacking the tiring big boppers, it could mean the end of man mountains in the centre field with coaches going for the more athletic type of forward like Cameron Murray. That bloke can run all day, a real endurance athlete.

Cooper Cronk says ruck rule makes for middle play

His dad says he is remorseful. Sorry for being caught, breaking the rules, being stupid or all of the above. He should be fined another bucketload for posting it on social media.

UPDATE: Cleary set to be fined by police over social distancing breach

I’m no fan of the bunker but it should stay. One proviso I would like to see in the bunker is a shot clock on the video refs to avoid the multiple replays. If they don’t have a decision in a certain time then it goes back to ref’s decision. The one ref should work well even though coaches will come up with something to make it harder. I like the idea of restarting the tackle count instead of a penalty for ruck infringements. While we are changing rules another I’d like to see is the replacement number reduced to six, 3 in the first half, 3 in the second and if the first three are not used then they are lost, use them or lose them. This would bring fatigue back into the game giving the smaller blokes a better chance to shine.

Bunker to survive NRL cost cuts

I remember that night. Fatty and I think it was Matty Johns had a spar with two others acting the goat with them. When Chief had his turn he decided to get serious and try his luck. Unfortunately for the Chief the other bloke became serious and it was good night Chief, a very quick good night. There is a big difference between footballers who think they can fight and a boxer.

Footy player boxing bouts must stop before someone gets hurt

Good story with the first and third paragraphs nailing it. It is a disgrace to boxing that the relevant authorities allow these retired footy players to become instant pros. Real boxers take years to learn the craft like Kostya Tszyu having 270 amateur bouts before turning pro. Turning this story around, just imagine a retired boxer deciding he wants to be a NRL player. It won’t work because he hasn’t learnt the skills of the game growing up playing it. Jeff Fenech had a go at RL and flopped. It takes talent and lots of it to become good at any sport, boxing probably moreso than any other because your opponent is trying his best to belt you into next week. A poster on here earlier today said “it’s nothing more than training” talking about pro athletes being committed. There are plenty of heavily committed boxers in training that will never attain stardom. If someone takes up boxing at an age when athletes are at the back-end of their careers and wins a few, that tells me the talent pool is dry.

I have the answer…………… Billy kicked David Klemmer in the head while mid air catching a bomb.

Is Johnathan Thurston really better than Andrew Johns?

Without trying to be too picky, Alan Langer did off the cuff plays his whole career, Steve Mortimer was an instinct half so much so he fell out with his coach Warren Ryan. Billy Smith bedazzled his captain Graeme Langlands so much they too fell out, Langlands calling him a smart arse. Peter Sterling, absolute genius, Kevin Junee rejuvenated Easts so much in 1967 they made the semis after not winning a game the year before. Tommy Raudonikis, well he was different, a halfback belting frontrowers. Then we have Geoff Toovey, Des Hasler, Brett Kimmorley who played half in SOO ahead of Joey. It’s too much to say a player changed the game with Billy Slater given the same credit because he is the best fullback since Langlands.
Joey and Jonno are the best halfbacks IMO, since I started going to games in the 60’s.

Is Johnathan Thurston really better than Andrew Johns?

Nice article Adrian and I had no doubt who you would pick as soon as I saw the headline knowing your passion for the Knights. In your last two paragraphs you mention Joey changing the game. In fact you ask yourself that question. Saying a player changed the game is a commonly used term while talking about a players ability, so common it is losing it’s impact. I ask you to be more specific in your definition of how Andrew changed the game. Rugby League is still played by great players and if we have too many great players changing the game in the future we will end up with a game changed too much. I can’t split Johns and Thurston, both exceptional players.

Is Johnathan Thurston really better than Andrew Johns?

Arthur Clues, now there’s a name from the past. I met him in his shop in Leeds when quite young, having been told to look him up by his old team mate Jack “Duck” Walsh before I left for my first overseas adventure. Duck was a regular at a pub I worked in at Homebush for a while and gave me some names to look up. Arthur was very hospitable, a real gentleman trusting me on the mention of a mate’s name although Duck told him I could be in Leeds.

Who will be rugby league's next Immortal?

Lockyer was indeed a top notch fullback but as stated here before me he needed help in defence. Billy Slater is the best fullback since Graeme Langlands and the only reason I rate Langlands higher is because he played in a more brutal era of thuggery and the defensive line was only 5 yards for a lot of his career.

Who will be rugby league's next Immortal?

Although I like the Immortals concept it does appear to be losing it’s gloss. It was originally a marketing ploy to sell magazines and worked well for some time. If it’s kept as a prestige level of recognition then it must be kept quite exclusive with a lengthy timespan from a player’s retirement until his nomination. With so many names being thrown about who have played in the last two decades I would like to see something like 10-15 years, a career generation gap, after retirement before a player can be nominated. Ron Coote and Ken Irvine, mentioned on here earlier are both worthy of a spot before any from the last 30 years.

Who will be rugby league's next Immortal?

Thanks DS. Cousin Bob told me, He likes to have a beer with Duncan, he likes to have a beer with Dunc, they drink in moderation and never ever, ever get rolling drunk, they drink at the White Horse Camperdown, where the atmosphere is great, he likes to have a beer with Duncan ‘cos Duncan’s his mate.

Nathan Cleary embroiled in second NRL social distancing scandal

How stupid have people become since social media became the rage. Commit a serious offence and then put it out there for everyone to see. Their fellow players must be livid with what’s happening. Cleary surprises me as I thought he had some sense but not Addo-Carr and Mitchell. Last year when Freddy picked his squad he banned mobile phones while in camp. JAC said in an interview that he was addicted to social media and couldn’t get by without his phone but would abide by the rule. Some people just don’t think.

Looks like the three footballers have been fined $1000 each by the Police. No mention of the others in the photo re fines.

You’re right mate, the beach is crown land but the bush track they were riding on was described as being on Mitchell’s farm
