New Wallabies coach Dave Rennie volunteers to take pay cut

By The Roar / Editor

New Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has reportedly agreed to a 30 per cent pay cut until the start of September as Rugby Australia struggles to deal with the financial impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

While nothing has been publicly confirmed by Rugby AU, it has bee widely reported that Rennie volunteered to take the pay cut in light of similar measures taken across the business. Rennie’s Wallabies contract doesn’t begin until July 1.

Australia’s Super Rugby players – save for Izack Rodda, Isaac Lucas and Harry Hockings – all agreed to an average 60 per cent pay cut which ends on September 1. However this will be renegotiated if and when Super Rugby AU gets the go-ahead.

Rennie himself had already accepted a similar measure through his current job at the Glasgow Warriors, as he and all other head coaches in Scotland deferred 25 per cent of their pay until September 1 due to the Scottish Rugby Union’s own financial difficulties.

Rugby Australia announced earlier this week that a third of their full-time staff had been made redundant as part of a wide-ranging, cost-saving restructure. Interim CEO Rob Clarke has indicated further cuts will follow.

He may have a pretty tough start to his Aus coaching tho as his first 4 tests could be against NZ due to C19

Agreed JCmasher, Rennie is a very astute guy who highly values community engagement. It would have come as a surprise were he not to take it but nonetheless underpins his commitment and empathy to the rugby community in Australia. Imagine a CEO who lead an organisation off a cliff due their unsound decisions then walks away with a big bonus on her way out. Speaks volumes about one’s character don’t you think ???

He ended up on exactly 50%. don't forget that 4 of his last 6 tests were against Samoa, Fiji, Uruguay, and Georgia.

From memory you were the biggest "Cheiks" supporter. He was the man, the Shute Shield, NSW hero. Tell us how that went again, Big Timer? You got what you wanted, now go and revel in your Cheika days....

Think he dropped below 50% by the end my friend. Would have been closer to 45% I suspect? But you’re right, the only way Rennie doesn’t do better than 50% I’d there is a mass exodus of Australian players due to covid.

Again, Cheika managed 50%, surely someone who actually watches opposition footage and has half a brain can go 1% better?

If a wombat can achieve a 50% win rate then what makes you think someone who actually analyses the opposition can't go 1% better?

Yes, Geoff thanks for telling us that. As sad as it is, I’m pleased to know it. It means there are less Debbie Downers and curmudgeons on here than I thought.

Does any one know if any of the Aus SR team coaches have taken pay cuts? Not that their workload has changed much but the financials certainly have...

Suppose it is a good example of Rennie reading the "play". Shows some solidarity with his players.

It is only what other sports leaders have done around the world but fair credit to him for taking the cut upfront. Some so called leaders have had to be dragged kicking and screaming to this conclusion.
