Izack Rodda makes French connection after Reds departure

By Murray Wenzel / Wire

Izack Rodda has signed with French club Lyon a month after his messy Super Rugby exit with the Queensland Reds.

The Wallabies lock together with Isaac Lucas and Harry Hockings had their contracts terminated at the Reds after refusing to take league-wide pay cuts stemming from the coronavirus shutdown.

The 25-Test lock had been linked to an interstate move, but after earning the ire of Rugby Australia will instead suit up for Lyon in the Top14 from September.

You should read it again then, I was specifically referring to the Reds forwards, who Thorn has unarguably coached very well.

The biggest difference in the forwards is they have better ball running options now. The Reds under Stiles were one of the better scrums. The lineout is still hit and miss. I'm guessing Bosley is reasonably new to rugby and probably never played. He finds it too easy to disparage the guys who put it on the line week in week out.

I just comprehend Rhys talking about how well the Reds have played under Thorn. Maybe Thorn‘s Reds are building to something great, but in no way can they be said to have been going well under him so far. In perhaps Australia’s era least successful period since super rugby began, the Reds have fairly consistently been the weakest Australian team. Of his 14 wins in charge, how many were against the Sunwolves?

Thanks for the advice Bosely. Thorn will leave sooner or later and you will move on to your next distraction, perhaps another odious article disparaging Quade Cooper or the next target that drifts into your crosshairs. Meanwhile I'll remain aligned to the Reds, especially those players that accumulate caps and put in appearances at club level and juniors. I will also remain steadfast in my critisism of anyone who denigrates or put themselves above those same players.

My single article which suggested that Stiles shouldn’t publicly attack his players after losses, was nothing like your continued spiteful, personal attacks on Brad Thorn. Anyway, if you what to continue to make a spectacle of yourself with these unedifying displays, break a leg, it is of no consequence for anybody but you.

Far from insulted, Geoff. Your compatriots have a deep appreciation and understanding of rugby union ... unlike many Aussies!

We should encourage all our players to go overseas if they are offered the chance. We should be happy with more and more of our players going professional. That Way we will attract young athletes to our game as they will see the opportunity. We should also remove the Giteau Law and simply pick the best players.

I've seen enough of his results, heard enough of him speak and seen enough of how handles players to formulate a reasonable opinion on both his coaching ability and his intellectual capacity. And you, Bosley, have written numerous articles defending this gormless dolt and his poor performance it's obvious you're wed to the man and not the club. I remember you were one of the first to sink the boot into Stiles after his first few games in charge. The Reds don't need Thorn or nouveau supporters like yourself.

Totally agree he is still a rough stone, but as you rightly stated ...lots of potential n under a coach like DR, who knows what you might get , but the chances are more good than bad.

He also has a far better record than Thorn. Maybe Wessels is a poor coach, maybe not. But Wessels’ ability is irrelevant to Thorn’s ability as a coach.

Depends what you mean by ‘well’ Rhys. - Reds came last out of the Australian teams in 2018, third last overall and won only 6 of 16 matches for a 37.5% win percentage - Reds came last out of the Australian teams in 2019, second last overall and won 6 out of 16 matches for a 37.5% win percentage - Reds came second last out of the Australian teams in the 2020 super season, tenth overall and won 2 of 7 matches for a 28.6% win percentage. For three years they’ve consistently capitulated in the second half, have issues in defence and no real kicking game. I’m not particularly enamoured by a 36% win percentage when playing in the easiest conference and getting to play the Sunwolves twice a season.

Sure, you take a 60% pay cut for the next 3 months...why don't you volunteer for it. Meanwhile the rest of us will go earn more money. Surprise you did not work out the percentage over his life time earnings.....that will give you an even small number Mr spin doctor.

A dumb comment like that, which strongly suggests that you haven’t been paying attention to how well the Reds forwards have played under Thorn’s tutelage, does nothing to bolster your credentials to comment on another person’s intelligence.

Olly spin it how you like but the 60% is total BS and the maths PROVES it...Regardless of that tho 190 players accepted it as part of the C19 financials and 3 didnt.....The 3 will be remembered for this decision forever and they were surprised at the reaction of fans...Really? ...Clearly they are not in touch with the world

I agree with some of your points LED. He may come back a better player or he may come back riddled with injuries which is well talked about over here amongst players who have a stint in France for a variety of reasons. I honestly don’t know too much about why he left but I do see your point. It is a job and he needs to do what is best for him. I get that. It’s probably the manner of the way it went down. These things can always be handled better. No different to how someone leaves a job outside of rugby. Coming back a year out from WRC is a different matter. Hopefully we will be back up to full strength on and off the field and we have brought through talented 2nd rowers. Then if he is good enough then he can help drive competition for places. Finally, the clock is ticking for the ARU to get a plan executed for next year etc. If not, I am sure there will be more. But let’s note that the grass is not greener in the Northern hemisphere at present.

It is outrageous if true. Mining is viewed as a trough from outside but professional placement is a rate normally less than 3 months salary. I mean, what are these guys doing for their client once a contract is signed?
