Seven takeaways from Round 3

By Charlie Keegan / Roar Guru

Here are seven talking points from Round 3 of the AFL.

1. We’re not out of this yet
Reports on Saturday raised the positive COVID-19 test of Conor McKenna and the nature of his exposure. As an international player who was forced to self-isolate and quarantine for two weeks before he returned to Essendon, he uniquely exposed the sensitive and tenuous situation the AFL currently finds itself in.

There has been a belief that we are returning to normal, however, McKenna has exposed how flawed the best-laid plans are in the pandemic context. As a result of this, and through no fault of his own (the AFL does allow players to move house in the isolation context), McKenna has shown the system designed to protect players to be extremely flawed.

It is only with extreme caution and awareness of the risks that players and coaches can continue their seasons, hopefully to their conclusion, but player safety is paramount.

2. Suns ravage Crows
On Sunday, the Suns showed that last week was not just a fluke. They comprehensively dominated the hapless Crows in every statistical category from marks (+31) and possessions (+66) to tackles (+19).

Their pressure was a sight to behold as the irrepressible Suns rolled on to win their first match against the Crows in ten years. Matt Rowell continues to cement his name as the Rising Star favourite, and may even poll well in the Brownlow Medal should his performances continue. The Suns will face a sterner test next week as they face a hungry Fremantle outfit at Metricon Stadium.

3. What is going on at Richmond?
In this year’s weird fixture, it is difficult to draw any conclusions from any single match but the normally energetic Tigers looked lethargic and tired as they were surgically dissected by a hungry Hawks outfit.

The Tigers were suffocated in their attacks and found no relief from a Hawks outfit eager to prove last week a fading memory. They moved the ball with relative ease through the Tigers’ zone.

It was a victorious return to form for Jaeger O’Meara as he achieved 23 disposals and two goals. He showed his importance to the Hawks’ midfield with his silky skills. But this loss raises questions of a Richmond outfit where percentage and points will be extremely important in this abridged season.

Are we seeing a return to the yips hoodoo and Richmond finishing ninth?

4. There’s some bite in the Bulldogs-Giants rivalry
If we needed a reminder, the melee occurring at three-quarter time on Friday showed plenty of feeling between the Giants and Bulldogs.

Sadly, the game itself was characterised by poor skill and basic errors as the Dogs ground out an important win in the context of a previously embarrassing season for a side thought to be a smokey for the premiership.

To the Giants, it raises awkward questions of their premiership credentials, a question they do not have the ability to answer.

5. Fast-starting Carlton get an almighty fright
The Blues showed they can start games well, before fading out and nearly losing in heartbreaking fashion. Thankfully, some Eddie Betts heroics and Geelong’s ineptitude kept Geelong from taking the points from the hungry Blues.

Of particular note was the blanketing of Tom Hawkins by the in-form Jacob Weitering, who showed his value as the first draft pick of the 2015 national draft. Furthermore, Marc Pittonet is proving to be a very shrewd acquisition from the Blues’ list management team as he continues to fill in for the injured Matthew Kreuzer.

6. The Eagles don’t like Queensland
The team that was thought of as the favourite for the premiership as recently as two months ago has not impressed in their time on the Gold Coast.

They went down in the pressure cooker of Metricon to the Suns last week and then were exposed by a Brisbane outfit surging up the ladder. Despite naming a comparatively full-strength outfit for both weeks, they’ve looked slow and panicked against the faster and younger sides of Brisbane and Gold Coast.

In this shortened season they need to bank wins and percentage early so they can coast home in the relative confidence that they’re due to round out the season with a series of home games.

7. Saints have a bit to go before they can call themselves a genuine threat
Collingwood showed what it takes to be a premiership threat as they cast aside their rivals in a convincing manner. The Pies showed the power of the high press and suffocated the Saints up the ground to score repeatedly.

The Saints, on the other hand, despite the many positives that could be taken from the previous week, could not carry it over and showed the gap between the upper echelons of the competition and where the Saints are currently located.

The Saints are an outfit in transition as the new players from last year’s trade period work with one another to build the chemistry and abilities integral to winning a premiership.

How, in any way, is this issue not relevant to football? Was it only last week that Eddy Betts was subjected to a disgusting racial vilification attack? I see you quite clearly. You just want to separate it from football because it makes you uncomfortable.

I believe the AFL has done an excellent job in dealing with this issue. I don’t think you understand the point I am making, you are too keen to use this forum to promote “the issues” which may or may not be relevant to football.

Once again you seem to miss the point or deliberately mis-represent the situation. This is something that a lot of white Australians do. They look at this issue through their own "white" eyes, rather than trying to see it from the perspective of the persecuted. No-one expects the AFL to "solve" this issue but they have a obligation to set an example of best practice in a social, moral & racial responsibility.

Football is limited in what it can contribute to solving social problems, if you don’t understand that you will continue to be disappointed. I am sure McGuire regrets the comment he made and I am prepared to give him the opportunity to redeem himself. He would be a powerful agent to have on side. I am more interested in solving the problems that indigenous players face in our game than using the AFL as a forum for solving society problems at large. I believe I have very little in common with Sam Newman who is rather desperate to attract headlines.

There so much wrong with that statement Aransan. You sound just like Sam Newman. An accidental slip up on air is dropping an F-bomb or similar, not crafting a narrative about how good Adam Goodes would be promoting King Kong because of his “obvious”, according to Eddie, similarities! You are just another blind, privileged white male, no doubt who is also part of the problem, not the solution. It doesn’t matter a jot what you think is the truth or the solution, it only matter what the people on the receiving end of racism feel is the truth and the solution.

I can’t see what can be lost in talking privately with Collingwood. Buckley is a genuine and good person. I would prefer to have McGuire on my side and I can’t see why this couldn’t happen. He made a mistake regarding Goodes but there aren’t too many of us who would never make a mistake given the amount of scrutiny that he is under. To accuse people of racism is to concede that you have lost the fight.

That’s right “all waiting”….and still waiting. Poor Treloar…..wishes he’d come to Tigers now when he had the chance….he’d have two medals by now and more on the way. Did us a favour by not coming. Over half of those guys you just mentioned Petie would struggle to get a game anywhere else but the Crows right now. Aren’t Dunn and Langdon injured to the point of retirement…what planet are you on? Collingwood peaking way too early this year and will plummet when Pendles retires next year!

My thoughts exactly, that and they're meeting their expectations instead of failing them.

They haven't won a game yet but they’re more likely to than WCE. They're playing better football, they seem like a happier and more cohesive unit and they’re not sooking it up like the Eagles are.

Looks like Heretier has Eddie, Buckley and any of the Racists at Collingwood by the short and curleys ones. Soon to be exposed. COLLINGWOOD has referred former player Heritier Lumumba's racism allegations to the club's integrity committee, saying it "could not fully appreciate the personal impact of his experiences" during his time at the club. So said Lumumba: Interesting that Collingwood is now shifting its narrative to claim that they are trying to 'reach out' to me. Let me very clear: I have no intention of sitting down with anyone until they publicly acknowledge some fundamental facts. acknowledgment? Because I have been discredited publicly. I don't want a private handshake. I want justice for how I was treated. That includes correcting public denials about my account of the racism and isolation I faced. "Collingwood needs to acknowledge the following: They did not have the cultural competence and organisational literacy to deal with a real culture of racism at the club, of which I was a victim for a number of years." Stay tuned folks and pass the popcorn. Lots more left in this one.

Fox footy are reporting the very slim possibility that there might be a false positive with McKenna. But the test they used is extremely accurate when detecting the coronavirus, however no test is perfect

Pies depth is extraordinary. Sier, Varcoe, Appleby, Treloar, Cox, Greenwood, Dunn, Langdon, Madgen, Reid, Quaynor, Scharenberg, Appleby, Broomhead…all with experience, all waiting for a shot at glory.

I’m not worried…you’re the one shooting your mouth off, then run a mile like a scared little Petie when challenged to put up or sht up. I know you’re worried because you’re well aware that Collingwood are peaking way too early…..congrats on another June Premiership Petie!

This virus has caught everyone off guard, like a bad flu season is nasty, a full blown pandemic is probably the single most cataclysmic event that can impact society short of nuclear war

Perhaps you used up your fuel early in the game. A great finish by Betts. I may have to start barracking for Carlton, very disappointing that McKenna has tested positive. As a community we have been complacent about this virus, and it is too easy to blame the politicians.
