NRL Round 9 teams: No changes for spluttering Broncos, new backline for Cowboys

By The Roar / Editor

The NRL Round 9 teams have been revealed.

Underfire Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold has declined to make any changes to his 17 despite a sixth consecutive loss last weekend, instead opting to simply to shuffle the forwards. Tevita Pangai Jr. will start at prop, Corey Oates moves to the second row and Thomas Fleger has been moved to the bench.

Their arch-rivals, North Queensland, have done the opposite, naming a new-look backline. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow gets the no.1 jersey again, with Valentine Holmes moving to the wing, Conelly Lemuelu moving into the centres and Justin O’Neill (injury) and Tom Opacic (form) making way.

He did have that option in his contract, based on playing x first grade games but he's retiring eitherway. That said, he shouldn't stink up the joint for legacy purposes.

Maybe Chris, but i think it all stems from Marsters. Feldt has no confidence in him at all and everyone is second guesing themselves. Green will hqve done a lot of work this week on that RHS. I hope it works or it will be cricket scores this week.

Feldt was a disaster In defence last week. Sure it was a Sivo ambush on him but a number of those options were weak as water. I reckon he saw the Teddy hit and said I’m having none of that thanks.

I think Holmes is still not at 100%. That’s got to be the reason for this call? Sure the Hammer has talent, but is he the best fullback option? Can’t he play wing also?

This was my thought also. Surely Boyd has to go? Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I thought Boyd’s contract stated that the option for the extra year required him to play more than 8 games? So if he plays this game and changes his mind on retirement, they’d have to pay him 800k to not play next year? Please tell me I got the number of game wrong?

I think Val at wing has a lot to do with injury recovery. Might not be ready to put a fullback's running load on that ankle yet. Good luck this week, I was thinking about how many the chooks have in sickbay and thought Cows more than half a chance, then I saw the team chooks were still putting on the paddock... no comment, but maybe Cowboys are still half a chance at home.

Stagg's will play, surely. They win their first two games, Staggs scores 4 tries. He's off, there is a drought. They rely heavily on individuals pulling something out of their hat.

I think Clifford is coming along OK. His defense just keeps getting better. He knows when to run , and his kicking game is good now he's getting good service from dh. I think, Morgs and Clifford can be a good combo. BUT Clifford needs to run things and do most of the kicking. Run, Michael , Run .

Plus Feldt stood at centre last week so he didn’t have to tackle Sivo

He's got some ability . He can get through the line and runs a good line . He's just a bit hot and cold. The difference between his best and worst is just too big atm. He is not our worst option though.

I'll be interested to see how Lemuelu goes in the centers, he's a fair sized unit. Reading his bio, he's played everywhere but mostly center in lower grades. Not sure about Feldty moving into center tbh. It's hard to argue the Holmes wouldn't do a job, no real good reason, I just like Feldt on his wing. I think Green will have to make his call on Drinkwater or Clifford upon Morgs return. Who would youse choose?

Maybe he just needs a rocket and getting put back to wing might just do it. Agree on Sivo. Teddy will have nightmares about him till his dying days.

I agree Val isn't hitting great heights but I think his importance to the team was growing each game. Last week was average at best but it was Parra, they've some good teams look pretty average... :crying: Bloody Sivo was devastating.

Well, I admire a man who is willing to back himself but after all this, if the Doggies win he should be gone.

What’s your take on Opacic jimmmy? I haven’t seen too many games but he seemed to hit the highlight reels for tries and offloads for the two weeks he’s in then gets dumped.

Yeah, i dont mind that at all . It gets Drinkwater out of the front line and gives us too really good wingers. Can Feldty play centre? Well he can't be worse than Marsters. What I think will happen though is that Morgs and Clifford will be halves and Drinkwater will go to the bench. At least Green has stirred it up a bit which I don't mind.

I think you are better off with Drinkwater at fullback, Fidow and Val on the wings and put Feldt in at centre. He can't do any worse than who has been there so far. I would definitely do that when Morgs comes back. Problem as always is Val is on "fullback" money so you have to play him at fullback.

Interesting. I quite like the move of Val to the wing. He’s a talent no doubt, but he doesn’t have the work effort atm. I hope Greeny told him that we need a high work rate fullback and he can’t play there until he steps it up.. Unfortunately Hammer is not a high work rate played either so I think Val will be back there next week. Personally I woukd have kept Val at the back but make him play like Ponga at the Knights. Stay near the ruck, play some first or second receiver, follow all the forwards through the line. He is way too content to sleep at the back.

Broncos aside, there's a few interesting changes in the Qld teams this week. Seems Green is happy with a $1m winger. Hammer is an absolute talent but Val would better serve NQ at the back I reckon w/ Hammer on the wing. Drinkwater and Hammer killed it in the nines with him on the flank (I know not a fair comparison). Thankfully Thompson has gone back to FB for the Titans. There's a young winger Spry, he's a solid unit who can move well. I'd say he's a better option for center instead of Cartwright but they're both just holding for Tonumaipia in any case. So Hunt is now a FT hooker? Good luck to him.
