Are the Newcastle Knights contenders?

By The King of the World / Roar Guru

Following their close 10-4 loss to the red-hot Parramatta Eels on Sunday, some are questioning the Knights’ credibility as a threatening force.

Since their loss to the North Queensland Cowboys, Newcastle have conceded four tries and only scored three, with two tries from dummy half. It seems they have lost their ability to execute and deliver. I still think their loss to North Queensland was a wake-up call.

I love my Knights and I praise them more than enough on Facebook and The Roar. Now to be realistic, I see us more as the dark horse side and in saying that, we’re not proving to be a force threatening a premiership yet.

I’m not saying we won’t win it this year but in saying that, it’s currently unrealistic. Our players have got a lot of work left to do and become the attacking force we know we can become.

I saw some signs of that against Warriors, Wests, Canberra and Brisbane – and even in the second half against North Queensland.

I don’t like saying this but we’re nowhere near as good as we think we are.

While I’m proud of how well our defence has improved, we really need to be able to execute and deliver.

I know that Connor Watson is set to return in Round 10 and his work off the bench has been immaculate, Mitchell Barnett is also looking like he could return to action and he’s been brilliant since his switch to the second row.

Our next test is against South Sydney and just like Parramatta, it’s a match we have to show exactly what we got. While I’m proud of how much our defence has improved, as I said we need to go back to being the attacking team we can be.

I am proud of how well we played against Parramatta, particularly holding them to ten points, we had our chances to win but we blew them.

We’re totally a top-eight team, which we are proving and a for the top four, there’s still some work left to be done. Kurt Mann in my opinion has been our best player in the team and I personally think his partnership with Mitchell Pearce has been decent.

Are the Newcastle Knights contenders in 2020? No we are not.

We’re a very good team but we have got a lot of work left to be done before we can say we are. I really hope I am wrong.

I do remember saying in an article back in 2018 that our year will be 2021, I stand by that.

I’m a massive Mitchell Pearce fan but I can’t recall a big game where he has stepped up. I’m not blaming him for the loss to the Eels but the harder the competition the less impact he has. Getting more clean ball to Ponga and Best is the key to unlock our attack.

I like the make up of the team, a good mix of experience and youth - they may just have a greater level of youth, which will hinder them during finals. Mann is a bench utility and should stay there IMO. Injuries are the real issue in 2020. With no QLD or NSW Cup, replacement players are underdone.

I would say from what I have seen they will be very competitive against any team but when teams target Ponga and he cannot get as involved in the contest they will struggle to score. They have a sound defensive mind set that O'Brien has clearly learned from the Storm & Roosters so they have bought into the system he demands. Definately make the bottom 8 but as we all know that is just the kiss of death come finals

Kurt Mann has been really good but the jury is out for me if he can keep it up. The Kurt Mann I knew from previous seasons was back against the Eels and they are in trouble if he can't fire up again.

They looked good early on, but their Coach seems to be pointlessly tinkering with their attack. Why are Ponga (their best off the cuff play-maker) and Best (a human wrecking ball) not getting more of the play? It looks like rope a dope, is their a magic strategy I am missing. They look very toothless at the moment. If they get their act together they are a top four team, but that's as far as they will get.

If they don’t beat Sou ffs with their superstar dullback on the sideline, they may as well give it away .

Newcastle had enough opportunities to defeat Parra twice in there last game. Not a fan of Mann at 5/8 but with some fine tuning I think Newcastle like Penrith could be nuisance value and at best finish one game short of a grand final. But of coarse anything can happen on the night/Knight.

They are going to miss Saifiti for the next month. If Mann has been the Saifiti is a close runner up.
