NRL Power Rankings: Round 4 - Tigers in finals mix? Panthers’ challengers falling by the wayside, Roosters lay an egg

Mary I think there is a combination of factors at play here. Firstly injuries have definately made it difficult to build combinations with so many players rotated in and out of the team this year.

Secondly the players we lose every year and there are too many to mention has put pressure on the team and when you combine that with the above stated injuries it has started to really impact the performances. Even someone like Aaron Pene who we let go to the Warriors last year would have been a handy replacement in the front row.

Thirdly leadership in my view is lacking. Jessie B may be a respected and great team player but he is no Cam Smith. Dale Funicane typied the hard nosed never day die ethos the storm are known for but for me late in games the younger guys are not quite ready to step up and guide the team to victory.

They still have a chance to make the Top 4 based on Parra’s & Souths tough draw so as you say don’t write them off just yet.

Will the Melbourne Storm miss the top four? Or finals altogether?

Its called respect- the Storm have made him a better player and a better person that can now cash in on that big fat contract. Stupid comments made in public to a proud club.

Send him back to Bellamy: Storm call bluff as Smith apologises for causing 'deep offence'

Hi Mary didn’t the Eels play alot of games at Bankwest in 2020/21? This made them almost unbeatable at home but average on the road without the comforts of home. Maybe as you say being away had an effect but its up to the coaching staff to make sure this does not excuse the performance.

Parra's players deserved more but Brad Arthur has done enough to remain as Eels coach

Mary although not an Eels supporter I tend to agree with you- the one thing missing is that they need to address their consistency or lack of. With the Roosters all busted up and Manly not starting the season well there is no reason Parramatta should have gone into a mid season swan dive which only served to reinforce how inconsistent they have been over the years. Start like a house on fire fade during the year. Had they locked up 3rd or 4th who knows how different things could have been

Parra's players deserved more but Brad Arthur has done enough to remain as Eels coach

I’d put my house on the fact that Atkins blows the most 6 agains in the competition- I believe from memory the Storm are one of the most penalised teams for this infringement so as long as he doesn’t get the gig on GF day I’d be happy

Stopping the Storm is going to take more than a brain-fart refereeing conspiracy

Couldn’t have summed things up better myself 😁

Stopping the Storm is going to take more than a brain-fart refereeing conspiracy

Is there a finals team more mentally fragile than the Eels? Yes they should account for the Knights but do they have the mental fortitude to win if it becomes an arm wrestle

NRL finals Week 1 preview: The quest to stop the Storm

there are a handful of players in the NRL that regularly cross the line and Victor Radley falls into the same basket as Mitchell IMO. There was clearly intent on Mitchell’s part to inflict punishment on Manu but giving him the benefit of the doubt he didn’t intend on hitting him high/breaking his cheekbone. There are a few players in every contact sport all over the world that play “in a zone” that borders on insane almost losing sight of reality when on the playing field. Souths obviously realize that Mitchell is the type of player that can’t be rained in and therefore would expect to lose him for multiple matches every season because of it

How did everyone get Latrell Mitchell's hit on Joseph Manu so wrong?

Interesting take on things Gibbo looks to me like a roster with a some aging stars, a couple of young players that should progress with another year of experience and a bunch of journeyman/underachievers. I see another bottom 4 finish next year unfortunately

Crystal-ball Cowboys: How the side will look in 2022

Great summary except why is it that what happened over 10 years ago relevant to this discussion now? As I recall Paramatta had their own salary cap scandel not that long ago and were hit with a feather duster as punishment so let’s all move on

History awaits the Melbourne Storm this Saturday night

We also had an issue in 2018 losing to Penrith in the final game of the season and only just getting over the bunnies. I’d be thinking he fields his strongest team given there are a number of key players that have been out for several weeks. The following week he rests a small number against Cronulla. I’m not too concerned about fairy tales just look at Cronulla in 2016, the Cowboys in 2015 and Souths in 2014. I am however more concerned with facing Manly and not the Roosters first week of the finals.

History awaits the Melbourne Storm this Saturday night

Newcastle have proven once their best 17 are on the field they can trouble some of the others in the Top 8. Don’t think they can beat the Storm & Panthers when it counts but certainly in with a chance against the others. I’d say they finish 7 and draw the Eels coming off consectutive losses to the Storm & Panthers is about the best they can hope for and you’d actually have to favour them.

How far can Newcastle go in the finals?

I wouldn’t decribe the Titans winning 3 games against cellar dwellers are being “great wins” for me this has been the most disappointing team all year- and can’t blame injuries and to top if off playing the majority of their games at home

Top eight NRL power rankings: Who makes the eight and who misses out?

As a Storm supporter I find myself getting frustrated with the way we are playing at the moment. It seems like we are treading water and a bye this week would do us the world of good. The intensity is just not there but we better find it quickly.

We are rotating different players through with injury which isn’t helping either- Dean Ieremia is a decent player but his defence is not up to NRL standard. Paps & Hynes rotating is not working either. Even if we don’t lose a game the rest of the season I don’t think it’s going to help us its almost a curse at the moment.

Bellamy eyes 'special' NRL wins record

hang on Mark the Eels forward pack is the envy of most teams in the league and I would rate in the Top3 easily. The’ve got a game breaking wrecking ball winger in Sivo and ex SOO winger in Fergo, a SOO player in Gutho and Mahoney not to mention international and SOO player in Moses. Its’ between the ears that is the problem they don’t believe themselves they can win the big games. Part of the blame must rest with Arthur and the squad

Premiership win or not, Eels fans owe Brad Arthur a debt of gratitude

Success is a very subjective statement- if you purely look at the premierships Arthur has won then its a complete failure. However considering only 6 out of 16 (37%) coaches in the past 10 Grand Finals have won one (and two have won 6)…then it doesn’t look so bad 😁

Premiership win or not, Eels fans owe Brad Arthur a debt of gratitude

agree Walter Black the most troubling thing is they have had very few injuries with only Moses missing so can’t use that excuse

Gutherson's C-bomb spray at teammate in Roosters thumping sums up Eels right now

I feel this is a psychological more than a physical battle-Penrith will be deserved underdogs due to the players missing but if they can somehow overcome a Storm outfit almost at full strength this will give them belief that they can win the GF without some of their big guns if injuries hit. Storm on the other hand will want to make a statement but you just get the feeling they need to win big in order to win the psychological battle. A close game is almost a loss

Storm and Panthers to clash in finals entree at potential grand final venue

Parra vs Canberra on Thursday was one of the best games I have seen all year (reffing aside). Just when you thought the Raiders were dead they can sniff finals footy. Not a bad loss for the Eels without Moses but will need to keep winning to keep pace or else could spell trouble if they fall out of 4th.

Big boppers, two wrongs and a one-eyed play: NRL Round 19 talking points

Manly in with a chance but likely have to do it from 5th place which as we all know is a death knell in the NRL

The Sea Eagles are the only side that can match the Storm or the Panthers this year

Agree with you Joe, my believe is that a rule is a rule or why have them. It shouldn’t be open to interpretation at all. Whether waiting until he turned 18 and still would have suffered an injury is almost irrelevant. I personally feel that given the high physical demands of rugby league compared to some other sports there is both a physical and emotional consideration to be taken into account before bending the rules.

'Massive blunder': Why the NRL owes injured Joseph Suaalii an apology

Its not just NRL that has an issue, in general the more varied the real life experiences that more enriched the person is. I’ve always believed based on what I’ve seen here and overseas, the coaches that weren’t the most gifted, the ones that had to work incredibly hard to compete have something within that drives success. It is also quite telling that only 3 of the current NRL coaches have a win rate above 60% and if you look at Michael Maguire as one of the 3 he sliding backwards at a rate of knots.

Great players do not make great coaches

As a avid some would say sporting tragic, I have often thought about a comparison to other sports to what Bellamy has achieved as a 1 club coach and the one thing that stands out for me is 2011. You have a team that has been stipped of its premierships the year before then goes out and wins the minor premiership in 2011 after losing some of its best players.

His record and level of consistency from 2011 is unparalleled- 9 Top for 4 finishes in 10 seasons. 5 consecutive Top 2 finishes. Only 2 current coaches have a winning percentage above 60% Bellamy is at 71%.

In my humble opinion he has passed Bennett but I’m sure others will disagree

Where does Craig Bellamy lie in the pantheon of GOAT Australian coaches?

Interesting read Gibbo and my take on this is that the Cowboys retention has been poor and agree they have suffered from the retirements of Scott, Cooper, JT and Morgan. These were all Origin players. The also have aging players past their prime and as you say Green stayed 12 months too long.

The Broncos….where do we start? They also lost alot of leadership in a short space of time- Parker, Thaiday, Gillett, Blair and let other players like Arrow ,Wallace, and Hunt go. Their retention manager should have been dismissed once they let Walker and Walsh leave but signed Croft from Melbourne which should have raised some alarm bells instantly.

Then the messy divorce from Bennett and allowing Seibold (with one good season at Souths) to take control was the beginning of the end.

The jury is still out on Walters, he should be for all intent and purposes be a fantastic coach, having been mentored by Bennett, Bellamy and Meninga. He’s won 6 premierships so as far as success goes he should be a winner…….but I’m not so sure.
