Wary Panthers update COVID restrictions to include gatherings and Gus

By Dane Eldridge / Expert

The high-flying Panthers are taking no chances with their premiership campaign, with paranoid officials enacting special ‘stage four’ bans on gatherings and former employees estranged from Ivan Cleary.

With the club firming large in the title race, administrators are desperate to avoid any derailings similar to Nathan Cleary’s Tik Tok scandal, Charlie Staines’ bubble breach and Phil Gould’s personal bickerings 2011-2019 inclusive.

While officials are concerned about the trend of players flaunting social distancing laws online, privately they remain most wary of Gould, especially with his history of coinciding finals with making “enemies” and “decisions”.

Despite Gould departing his role as general manager last year, the club is taking no chances with being disrupted by an alpha spat, inexplicable payout or puzzling midnight sell-off of Api Koroisau.

Club officials believe that with the side in prime form and nestled securely inside the top four, it exposes them to a greater risk of being sacked by Gould, or worse, offered a rash long-term deal.

For those unaware, the Gould Years were a heady mix of benevolence and brutality at the foot of the mountains, with the godfather of league implementing a myriad of pathways which were used to good effect to bring in juniors and ship out settlements.

Despite orchestrating a handful of successful seasons and an envious football operations structure, by the time Gould was ready to depart, the club was lurching from week-to-week and taking it one controversy at a time.

Even though the former supremo no longer enjoys any corporate authority or car park privileges at Panthers, officials are concerned he could leverage his 34 media platforms to deceitfully claim “him and Ivan are sweet”, or worse, campaign for Garth Brennan.

As a result, the club will ban any association with Gould, while also taking the additional precaution of locking up its cheque book and emerging rookies and any of their fathers who may be coaching first grade.

Many pundits believe the Panthers could have the firepower to challenge for a premiership in 2020, despite the club’s recent habit of falling victim to injuries and Gould’s fondness for hiring foes.

Ivan Cleary has successfully modelled a title-challenging outfit from the remains of the Gould era, which following his departure was nothing but the smouldering rubble of heartache and Cameron Ciraldo.

With the club flying so high, many pundits are wondering exactly how they can stuff it up without the former kingpin there to pick a fight, and whether Cleary’s squad can overcome its other famous enemies, that being themselves and them selfies.

So far, the coach has his charges humming, with James Fisher-Harris and Isaah Yeo producing form that would’ve seen them previously shipped to Parramatta, and Josh Mansour shrugging off form that would’ve seen him shipped to the Gold Coast. Additionally, son Nathan does not look “tired.”

As for Gould, he is being touted as a new NRL consultant, meaning he could be the first administrator in history to mount a media campaign demanding his own sacking before dishonestly selling himself to a rival on a higher wage for less work.

Despite the unique concept of banning a former employee, Panthers officials are hopeful of lifting the prohibition in 12 months. Under five-year-plan scaling, this should see Gould welcomed back by 2035, coinciding with the end of Reagan Campbell-Gillard’s contract.

Yes, you are a champion. But you have weird hair. and a habit of pretending you are a genius at calling plays before they happen ... ignoring all the times that they don't come off the way that you predicted. What's with that?

Gus Gould is a champion. The Penrith Panthers are in top position today because of his leadership. He set up the Panthers Centre of Excellence and the Panthers Rugby League Academy. I rate him highly. A professional trouble shooter. Gee the Broncos could use him.

I had a long response drafted here , kk . But then I thought it was probably too nasty ( and so unlike me) and it would have probably been deleted by the moderators anyway. Let me just say, that I am not a Gus Gould fan. I am not so sure he has done that much good at all for the Panthers over the years compared to the damage he has caused to various parties involved with the Club. The only thing for sure is that Gus has always done very well for himself, for many years thank you, from his association with the Panthers.

They've put the smoldering rubble of heartache and Gus behind them and demolished Manly at Brookvale. They're playing their best football in over a decade. However the finals are a different beast. Compared with the Roosters and Storm, they don't have the experience - and neither do the Eels. When October arrives with the new competition that is the finals, the Panthers, barring new injuries - should have their top team back. However by then, SBW will have half a dozen games under his belt and will be a major settling influence on the Roosters, just like Cronk was last year - especially if he hasn't got a busted wing.

Dane, You are on the right train: The 3:10 to Penrith, an Aussie western. Oxford gives us paranoia as : unreasonably or obsessively anxious, suspicious or mistrustful. Respected Roarer, Albo has known Gus since kick off and recently posted a gem, "He can find a gig and a pay packet, can our Gus!" So you can understand why the Board is wanting to protect the Panther purse especially when the word 'Gus' is mentioned. The last goodbye cost seven digits and they cannot afford to chance a renewed 'Hello' under any circumstances. As for C19, "Mask Up" so we can keep seeing League live and on our screens.
