Brisbane have confirmed the departure of head coach Anthony Seibold less than two years into a five-year deal after a horror 2020 NRL season.
The axe has fallen on embattled Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold after the Broncos’ disastrous 2020 NRL season.
Seibold addressed his players on Wednesday morning before fronting the media, confirming his departure less than two years into a five-year contract.
Seibold exits the Broncos after a troubled 12 months which included an embarrassing exit from last year’s finals and the worst first-grade season in the club’s 32-year history in 2020.
“Last week, I made the decision to finish my tenure as coach of the Brisbane Broncos,” Seibold said.
“Today, I am announcing that I will be stepping down from the role immediately.
“For many reasons, my time at the Broncos did not work out as we had all hoped.
“But that’s sport. We love sport because it’s full of uncertainty. And rugby league seems to throw up uncertainty better than any sport I know.
“Head coaching in the NRL isn’t for the faint of heart. I know that. And I know that I’ll be a better coach, a better leader and a better person for all that I have learnt.”
It’s a dramatic fall for a man who was hot property after being named the Dally M coach of the year in 2018 after his maiden campaign in charge of South Sydney.
Replacing legendary coach Wayne Bennett, Seibold led the Broncos to the finals in 2019 only for the club to crash out at the first hurdle after a 58-0 flogging by Parramatta.
The 2020 season began with back-to-back victories but since the resumption in May following the COVID-enforced hiatus his position had become increasingly untenable.
A 34-6 flogging by the Eels in round three sparked a run of 12 defeats in 13 matches including a 59-0 record loss to the Sydney Roosters which has left the once-proud club 15th on the ladder.
Adding to the chaos were off-field dramas including failing to retain star young forward David Fifita from signing with Queensland rivals Gold Coast and Tevita Pangai Jnr being suspended and most likely sacked for multiple COVID protocol breaches.
Despite hopes Seibold could see out the season, he now leaves the club immediately with assistant Peter Gentle to coach the team for the remaining five matches of the season including Friday’s return clash against the Roosters.
“The levels of scrutiny – some of it bordering on hysterical, if not slanderous in recent times – have placed a heavy burden on Anthony and his family,” CEO Paul White said.
“As a club, we have endeavoured to support Anthony and his loved ones through all of this.
“But at the end of the day only Anthony can understand what it is like to walk in the shoes of a Broncos Coach, and live with he highs and lows of the role.”
Club great Kevin Walters, overlooked by the Broncos’ hierarchy in favour of Seibold in 2018, is the frontrunner for the role with the support of several ex-players.
North Queensland premiership-winning coach Paul Green is also a contender, with Cowboys captain Michael Morgan not surprised his former boss is in the discussion.

You have to admit there’s an established track record there. I don’t know much about Demetriou, only time will tell once he’s appointed

Emotive garbage comment Andrew . Jason Demetriou is a a good coach it's proven, and Bennett has more than given his support the vermin had a victory signing both.

I wonder if Seibold will ever get another coaching gig again? You’d have to think he’d be on the nose for quite a while after this fiasco. But then again no coach has ever succeeded after taking over from Bennett. Ivan Henjak at Brisbane. Steve Price at Saints, Rick Stone at Newcastle & now Seibold at Brisbane again. Bennett goes out of his way to leave a dumpster fire behind him. I’m sure the same will happen at Souths once he leaves.

That would be your right of course, but performance clauses are pretty common as I understand it. Seibold's was unusual by their absence.

If you think it’s a coaching debacle then you haven’t been paying much attention to what’s been happening in the sporting world ........... This whole saga had it’s beginning of the end story when a wanna be somebody CEO Paul white made a power move to move Wayne Bennet on for Seibold .................. This was nothing short of a ceo wanting to take more credit for the broncos success than what the Coaches , players , old boys of the club and fanatical fans have driven the club to be over the years ..... If you watched Michel Jordan’s last dance you would of seen a similar Occurrence where CEO for the bulls jerry Kraus made power moves to make it known he was the genius behind the whole bulls success and then when he knew he couldn’t control the narrative or Jordan and pippens success he took the club apart ....... Sounds familiar ????? Paul white can not negotiate with the powerful player agents who basically shape teams playing roster , but Bennett had no drama with players and their agents Paul white stopped a lot of the old boys of the broncos activities , charities , player welfare mentoring programs because he couldn’t control that narrative Wayne Bennett could and encourages more club culturea a that what’s Brought the most success These young broncos signed up to play for and be coached by the master Coach when that was taken away from them it’s like the last straw So don’t give me the players and coaches on this one blame Paul white and his ego that’s where you should be pointing broncos fans

It's clear that the players didn't buy into Seibold's coaching style and game plans. However, I don't think this is the fault of the players themselves. I lay the following solely at Seibold's feet: 1. Defensive style - The Broncos have zero line speed, and always tackle high. The lack of effort on the line has been pathetic, but this is a result of the defensive style and structure. 2. Attacking style - The Broncos have looked clueless in attack outside of individual brilliance and Boyd's block play for at least 2 seasons 3. Use of the bench - A Seibold trademark. He wasn't good using his bench at the Rabbitohs which cost him come finals time, and he didn't adapt at the Broncos. His poor rotations especially with leaving props on the field for too long, and swapping hookers at inappropriate times, left the team fatigued and giving away momentum. 4. Selections - So many times he would sack a winger, or carry a centre on the bench. That time he decided to throw Dearden in as hooker was laughable. Poor guy couldn't catch a break under Seibold. 5. Darius Boyd - Boyd was useless at times last year at fullback. I have no doubt that Boyd was sulking all year at centre and after having the captaincy stripped from him, and that negative energy has caused the whole team to suffer. Seibold needed to treat this sensitive case with far better management skills. 6. Pangai - How many weeks did this guy need to spend suspended on the sidelines for Seibold to pull him up? Every time he got suspended, Seibold would come out and praise him for his aggression. It was crazy. At the end of the day, it's Seibold's inability to adapt that really left me scratching my head. The makings of a mutiny were there a couple of months ago when Glenn said the players are coaching themselves. He 'lost the dressing room' a long time ago, and has been looking more and more lost himself ever since.

But as a coach why would you sign anything with a performance clause? Especially in year 1. If I got a contract that said, 'you'll do x,y and z better than the last guy but with the same infrastructure'. I'd tell them all to get stuffed

I just don't get what could be so confusing about the game plans. Without knowing exactly how tough it is, but these guys are full-time athletes and other clubs seem to cope with complicated strategies just fine (Storm and Roosters springs to mind). I just think their is a little bit of a can't give a stuff attitude in Brisbane and they don't care to learn

"Greed is good"......well maybe not. This is a prime example where greed turned out to very bad indeed. He landed in a great coaching job in one of the NRL's founding clubs (a job I might add that most up and coming coaches would cut off their right arm to get).....and after a hugely successful first year decided to throw it all away by taking a job that was clearly way above his abilities at that stage of his career. How did this happen? Did he start to believe his own hype? Did he forget he had a very astute assistant in David Furner, not to mention a stable full of experienced premiership winning players including Sam Burgess, GI, John Sutton and Adam Reynolds who made his job pretty easy that year. That team basically coached itself. Hard to feel sorry for the guy...especially considering the way he left the Bunnies after basically stringing them along for 6 months while he did deals with the Bronco's in the background. Despite that though I still kind of do feel sorry for him. He must be wishing he had a functioning time machine right about now.

Totally agree, as I've posted elsewhere the position is fast proving to be a poisoned chalice, has ended the career of Henjak and now possibly Seibold, I wouldn't be surprised if the constant media scrutiny in the Brisbane bubble played a part in Bellamy turning down the role in '18 and if this plays a part in the club's ability to attract the best coaching talent in the years ahead

I take the effort thing with a grain of salt. Other than Boyd these guys have their careers to play for. The way they were going ... would a player sabotage their credibility in the market that much deliberately? They looked, as individuals, like they were trying to me. Boyd has even been ok since he gave up the leadership role. But those bad defensive reads, schoolyard stuff, the lack of direction in attack. That’s coaching when you consider the constant stories about how what he was trying to get across was confusing.

This was doomed from the start for both parties. Siebold had less than one years experience as a head coach before the Broncs went hard after him. This is one of the biggest, most prestigious coaching jobs in the game and they entrust the services of a guy with 7 months head coaching experience at the time of approach. Utter madness from the Broncos. Siebold had Souths playing very well however one guy that doesn’t get a lot of credit for that is the attack coach at the time - David Furner. Siebold clearly wasn’t ready for such a pressure cooker and should never have taken the job. Who would want to replace a legendary coach in any sport. He had a good job at Souths with less expectations / pressure than in Brisbane. As a Souths fan I was hoping Furner got the job instead of Siebold, Furner had previous head coaching experience and a successful stint assisting Paul Green at the Cowboys. Why the Broncos haven’t thrown the kitchen sink & open cheque book at Bellamy & Smith is bewildering.

I feel for Siebold. Alright, maybe his methods and selections were debatable. But all clubs go through bad patches, and now it's the turn of the Bronx. The coach isn't the only part of a team, and quite a few of the players haven't been doing much to "earn" their salaries. Any future coach had better get an iron clad contract in their favour, yes another one, given the past performance of the board and the playing roster. There has been a lot of speculation that Walters will walk into the job. This presupposes that he'll want it. A board that tries to sack its way to success is treading a dangerous path. This may make applicants a bit wary about taking on the Bronx and its underperforming team.
