What Carlton need before next season

By Josh Ward / Roar Guru

It’s been a season of development and growth for Carlton – a team stuck at the bottom end for five long years.

However, if they want to be a finals team, here’s what they need to do during the offseason.

Trade and free agency splash
Over recent years, whenever a team that has improved after a couple of rebuilding years, they go big in trade and free agency acquisitions.

Carlton looked likely to do that in 2019, but only got Eddie Betts, Jack Martin and Marc Pittonet. Now, they must do what the Saints and the Lions did in 2019 and 2018 respectively.

St Kilda bought star players Bradley Hill, Dan Butler, Dougal Howard, Paddy Ryder and Zak Jones, while Bribsane brought in players Lincoln McCarthy, Lachie Neale and Marcus Adams.

Signing stars
The Saints and Lions also did well because they recruited stars in previous seasons.

Charlie Cameron averages 1.5 goals per game and Luke Hodge was a great leader for Brisbane over his two years, and averaged 18.1 disposals per game.

The Saints got Dan Hannebery, who has averaged 21.4 disposals and 3.9 clearances (in sadly only ten injury-marred games).

Carlton have been linked to Zac Williams and Tom Papley (again) but they need to bring in maybe one or two more, especially on the wing, such as Rory Atkins, Jared Polec or even Isaac Smith.

Developing players into stars
Not only did St Kilda and Brisbane bring in stars, they developed their own.

Take Harris Andrews, for example. He was alright his first few years but since 2018, he’s become the best defender in the league, shutting out players such as Charlie Dixon, as well as averaging 13.3 disposals per game.

Jack Steele has become a superstar this year, averaging 22.2 disposals, 10.9 kicks, 5.4 tackles, 4.8 clearances, and 11.3 contested and uncontested possessions per game. He has become one of the best midfielders around.

In the end, despite it being a consolidating year for the Bluebaggers, they still need improvement.

They’re still a fighting chance to make finals this year, but if they improve a lot this off-season, 2021 could be the finals year that supporters have waited so long for.

Stop the we are coming theme and actually do something. Tired of hearing this is going to be the year and while having short spurts of good footy, miss finals yet again. Just Do It already

Could be they need a couple of players that may be available for trade to Carlton next year - Sidney Stack and Callum Coleman-Jones.

There has to be concerns that Charlie Curnow may not play a lot of footy from here on. A fit and firing Curnow would very much change Carlton's fortunes, but he may not be able to realise his potential due to what seems to be chronic injuries. Cripps is clearly restricted by chronic injuries, which have greatly restricted his performance and impact. Curnow seems to be heading the same way and it could derail Carlton's plans for this team.

McGovern has to go, don't care if we trade or delist him. Trade Dow and SPS (we might get a pick in the 20s but more likely 30s for them because of age and potential), delist Polson as he has shown he's not up to it. Murphy, Simmo, Kreuzer and Eddie should be thanked but not offered another contract. Need to go hard at and get Papley and Williams, we need speed with good skills and good decision makers. If Papley costs this and next years 1st round picks then so be it, he's worth it. Marchbank should be put on a lesser contract until he can prove that he can get his body right and that he really wants to be an AFL footballer as I reckon a lot of it is in his head as he can't play with a bit of pain. If he doesn't want to drop a bit in pay then trade him, someone would take him. Time to get tough with these mentally weak players, they need a good old fashioned flogging over pre-season to get fit and learn how to push through the pain barrier over and over again.

Compared by who? And in what way? He isn't doing anything like what a young Nat Fyfe was doing. Academy's need to be scrapped.

Not claiming him as the next Fyfe yet Macca, but has been compared to a young Fyfe. Your point on father sons is valid and Quaynor an academy player too. Looks like we get another top 15 pick as an academy player this draft too, then the newest and most promising Daicos the year after. Where’s the Blues father sons? Harmes ? Wayne Johnston? McLure? Kernahan? Doull? Bosustow? Rhys Jones?

Exactly Tyler has barely played, so lets not claim he is the next Nat Fyfe, Fyfe was dominating games at his age. Speaking of players who have barely played, all those "kids" you are "Not sure .. are up to it". Time will tell whether they work out or not but the blues only need 1 of the 5 to become a high quality player so I like those odd.

Tyler has barely played Macca. I don’t make comparison purely in stats like you. I just love the way the kid plays and see a star in the making.

Isn't Brodie related to one of our recruiters - Paul Brodie? COnstable would surely be worth going hard at, 3 years in the system and only 9 games and only 2 this year. That midfield isn't going to be any easier to get into next year.

Rory Atkins Zac Williams Tom Papley Will Brodie Nathan Broad Charlie Constable Rory could be a back up plan if we don't get Williams Will Brodie and Charlie Constable are big body mids Nathan Broad would be a great get, to shore up backline We need aleast 2 mids, 1 x Inside Mid and 1 x Outside Mid Maybe another half back flanker

Look at his facial expressions, let’s see if he’s learnt his lesson and plays for the team a bit more.

“Tyler has already been compared to a young Fyfe.” By who Eddie McGuire? Tyler looks a good prospect but who knows if he will be better or worse than any of those players. Far too early to tell. What I can say is that the pies fielded 4 father sons and an academy player against the Blues on the weekend – makes recruiting young talent a lot easier when you are getting that many on the cheap. FWIW Peter here is the comparison of Tyler and Fyfe at the same age https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?playerStatus1=A&tid1=5&playerStatus2=A&tid2=9&type=A&pid1=6457&pid2=3333&fid1=O&fid2=O The phrase “not even close” springs to mind.

Sier and Wills are inside mids only. They are slow but Sier has real potential.

Your too reliant on stats always Macca. I’m talking impact. Tyler has already been compared to a young Fyfe. Still, you would no more than me on those Carlton players, it just seems Blues have been saying the same things for 5 years now.

Marchbank had the broken neck, not McGovern. On the draft, the AFL top 25 didn't have a lot of fast mids in it. Trading looks the go to me.

You have seen a lot of those kids play have you Pete? Brown may have only played 6 games but was drafted in 2017, Stocker (5 games) was drafted in 2018, Kemp (0 games), Philp (2 games) & Honey (1 game) in 2019. If you compare Brown (6 games) to Dow (41), Brown is averaging 11.5 disposals, Dow 9.5, 1.2 clearances to 1.5, 1.5 tackles to 1.5, 4.7 contested possessions to 3.5, 10.5 metres gained to 137.5. Not a significant difference apart from the games, which might indicate what has been asked of each player?

Not sure those kids are up to it Macca. Tyler Brown has played maybe 4 games and looks better than all of those? But yes you desperately need some burst from stoppage and support for Weitering too.

Peter - you clearly aren't looking that deep at the blues. Firstly you need to look at the timing of the blues rebuild, KPP's first, mids later - the mids haven't been developing for 5 year. Secondly if you look at the blues list you will see plenty of mids with burst speed like Stocker (battled injury most of last year and then has had some personal issues this year) Kemp (knee reco), Philp (first year player) and Honey (first year player). Then there is Dow who has battled injury all year this year. That said there is a reason we are into Williams.
