Time to remove the dead wood: Who should your NRL club let go?

By Tony / Roar Guru

With only three rounds to go before the finals, many clubs will be looking at their player rosters and salary cap calculators to determine how to be more competitive next year and improve their position on the table.

The bottom eight are pretty much set in concrete and, of the top eight, Cronulla and Newcastle are just hanging on to premiership aspirations by their fingernails.

Apart from the hot topic of coaches, who are apparently 100 per cent responsible for team results, it’s ultimately the quality of the playing roster that is the key to either success or failure.

A look through most playing rosters reveal both some bad salary cap investments, and players who are not playing up to club expectations.

In order to move forward, clubs need to take action to remove the dead wood and use the salary cap savings to not only retain their quality players, but also make the required squad additions.

Here are some players, signed beyond this season, who will be put under the microscope by club retention committees in coming weeks:

Broncos: Jack Bird (player option for 2021); Matthew Lodge (signed until 2022); Anthony Milford (2021)

Canterbury Bankstown: Dylan Napa (2021); Josh Jackson (2023)

Cronulla: Josh Dugan (2021); Nene McDonald (2021); Matt Moylan (2021)

Gold Coast: Bryce Cartwright (2021)

Manly: Brad Parker (2021); Moses Suli (2022)

Newcastle: Tim Glasby (2021)

New Zealand: Adam Blair (player option for 2021)

Cowboys: Jake Granville (2021); Esan Marsters (2022); Justin O’Neill (2021)

Parramatta: Daniel Alvaro (2021); Blake Ferguson (2021); Michael Jennings (2022)

South Sydney: Ethan Lowe (2021)

St George – Illawarra: Trent Merrin (2021); Corey Norman (2021; Korbin Sims (2021); Tariq Sims (2022)

Roosters: Ryan Hall (mutual option for 2021)

Wests Tigers: Russell Packer (2021): Josh Reynolds (2021)

Interestingly, I couldn’t identify any dead wood in the playing rosters of either the Panthers, Storm or Canberra.

Not everyone will agree with the above list and I’m sure that I’ve missed a few, but there’s quite a number of players who may receive a tap on the shoulder in the next couple of months.

Of course, identifying the dead wood is one thing, but moving players on is another. There are contracts to consider, for what they’re worth these days, and where will these players go?

No ones mentioned A Fafita.Sharks don’t have the heart to take him out the back paddock .Given his GF heroics I’m happy for him too play as long as his Body lets him.BB your a bit harsh on Nene , he’s hardly had a game.I agree on that oxygen thief R Packer but apparently Madge still loves him

A bit rough on Tim Glasby to lump him in with the lazy & overpaid, when the reason he can't play is repeated concussions & he's set for medical retirement.

That's going to be the tricky bit

And there has to be a willing buyer to take them off the current club's hands.

I thought HSS was the best of the young backs that Ricky has tried this season - looked very composed for a young bloke. I'm surprised and disappointed he hasn't been given more opportunity. I think Valemei and Timoko show promise but I think HSS has Cotric like potential. He should have been given 3 or 4 games by now - ready to take Cotric's spot next year. I really fear what Croker will bring if he's signed to a long-term deal. If this is all he is delivering at the moment I reckon it will be even less in a couple of years time - diminishing returns. Its tough as Jarod bleeds green and everyone knows he's a good bloke but you have to be ruthless to win comps.

I reckon Parker is the best of those three at the moment, and that's saying something

I don't really see Croker as a winger

Agree, they've got work to do in order to bolster their outside backs.

Well, they've certainly got some identity issues now

You're not wrong but Croker is about to sign for another couple of years, Looks like he'll play out his days at the Raiders unless he is hit by a career ending injury. One option is to move him to the wing. He should be a good finisher and is smart enough to learn how to do the flying leap try. He is good at following through kicks and grubbers so he would be useful there. As for Scott, he has been ordinary, but apparently Melbourne are carrying a fair bit of his freight so comes really cheap for the Raiders. Rapana is probably the best of them, apart from Cotric - who is leaving. His aggressive runs and decent defence make him a keeper. The big issue there is that each of those players would be fine if there was only one or two of them in the back line. Yes, a centre and a winger are needed. But who? We have not seen enough of the players coming through to know if they fit the bill... Valemei, Timoko, and Harley Smith Shields each have only one or two games under their belt. Simonson is decent but he has not set the world on fire. The other issue is CNK. He is a decent fullback but not in the top echelon. Im afraid its just a waiting game to see who grabs the spots next year. Hopefully one or two of them have a bit more pace than the current backline.

Agree - I was surprised Scott wasn't on the Barry's list - hardly dead wood but he certainly hasn't delivered up until now. Dare I say it - should Sia be on the list - club legend that he is? I think the effort is there from both of them but you need to make some tough decisions to manage an NRL squad. And for the Raiders to progress to be a regular top 2 or 3 team they may need to look at bolstering their backline. Does Jarod Croker do enough to justify his spot? He makes very few metres coming out of defence and hasn't scored many tries this season. He needs to do more than just be a good bloke. Do you keep Jordan Rapana for another couple of seasons? I actually think so. He does so many tough carries compared to some of the others and is capable of doing something brilliant. The Raiders have some tough decisions to make with Cotric leaving and the relatively poor performances so far from Scott. We really miss BJ's explosive x factor (minust the brain explosions). I'd be looking at recruiting a centre and a tall winger with the leaping ability of a Vunivalu or a Daniel Tupou.

I've always thought that if they never won that 05 premiership they would have disappeared a decade ago.

Hoffman is a level below what is required of a fullback in the NRL now. He’s not played fullback in the NRL since July 2016. His last 3 seasons in the NRL were at wing and centre. Milford is an option purely because he’s already on the books.

Joe, Earl yes, good guy but.... Hynes? Do you see that much in him? I haven't seen much wrong but nothing to suggest he's more than only average and not a long term halves solution. He has good hair though so there's that. Probably not paid much though which would be a plus, maybe he needs more opportunity? Jacks was punted once and might be again?

Hoffman faster & more heart than Milford & Boyd & can actually play FB. Milford doesn't have the chops for FB anymore.

None will ever be as good as Hoffman is right now! He scored a double this time last year against the Broncos & a 90m try against the Cows for Parra. He has 2 things the current FB or Milford don't have: Heart & speed. Barely an ISP Player? Ran for over 200m & scored a try in the last 4 games at Wenty last season; as captain. Came back to Qld with his wife & 3 kids but couldn't go into the Cows bubble this year because of Covid. A Porky Morgan medal winner......would be a great leader for the outside backs at Broncs.

Terry, I agree that he was a top player before he went to Penrith but I just don't see it these days. Hopefully for the Dragons, you are right and I'm wrong. :stoked:

A couple of seasons ago Merrin was our best performed forward consistently and our pack leader ..... his longetivity suggests that he is professional and prepares properly .... of course I could be way wrong but I see in him the forward leadership for the young blokes coming through.
