Mushi, what would the metric be in RL? P.A.R? Points Above Replacement? How much PAR would each of these be against the halfback who meets the NRL bare minimum ability for a contract? It would have to be heaps I reckon. Interesting trying to apply sabermetrics to NRL.

Sorry universe, but Cooper Cronk is superior to Johnathan Thurston

Willie, Tim Glasby has returned off field also. He is another one of the quality people who create and lead the culture. I would like to see Bellyache in a Coaching Director role based on QLD, mentoring and supporting the coaches up there, including the Netball, and helping with talent spotting as well as the Melbourne crew. That way I think he gets to be closer to the grandies etc but can still leave a mark on the Club without the burdens of being the Head Coach. I think Jason Ryles may have been earrmarked and the RU job is just more experience.

All hail the new kings of Melbourne

BS, I think the plan must be to not contest defensive breakdowns!

GP, undoubtedly there will be winners and losers but it’s just a commercial reality that not evrything will be on one provider otherwise there would be no competitive tension and the subscribers would be getting screwed over by the monopoly.

The Wrap: A great new broadcast deal for rugby? Depends on who’s telling the story

Comment 1 – I think DR was being honest when he said “we’re 3 games into a 4 year journey” so with that in mind, injuries and the Bled lost changes maybe less surprising when you are trying find out what your group can do. It worked out well!
Comment 2 – an “opinion” piece without a byline? Mmmmm, wonder who that could be! A well reasoned article from someone who understands Australian Rugby at the moment, cheers.

Dave Rennie's influence starting to shape the Wallabies

Macca, it’s not the player’s fault they were offered those contracts but they are the ones thrown under the bus! Very poor culture.
This is a massive salary dump. I don’t understand when contracts expire and I know there is back and front ending etc but I would be sending the salary cap auditors in if Collingwood had to take such drastic action to get (or stay) under.

AFL trades 2020 report card: Every club graded

RB, pretty sure the forests south of the border, down Dorrigo way, have the best pot. Allegedly. So I’ve heard. Maybe.

How the bench warmed Australian hearts in Brisbane

Goady, see I just don’t get this. The fact is there are several subscription services and they all compete for product. I would love to live in the perfect universe where all the things I want to watch are on one provider but reality says that isn’t going to happen and will probably get worse. There will always be decisions to make about which services you subscribe to based on what the value proposition is to you individually and that will vary from person to person, from year to year as rights are bought and sold. So Rugby is now 9 / Stan, it either suits you or it doesn’t but after the 3 year term it could easily be another combination. There is no point whinging as many are about “I’ve got XYZ but now it’s on ABC boo hoo I might have to change”. Either change or don’t change, it’s your money Ralph.
Another option is to pick up and drop subscriptions seasonally where that is possible.

New broadcast deal puts Rugby Australia on cloud Nine

Greysy, yep, so many generalisations in just 2 meagre pars!

New broadcast deal puts Rugby Australia on cloud Nine

Peter, “However, Rugby AU interim CEO Rob Clarke confirmed that at least four regular-season Shute Shield and Hospital Cup matches will be shown on free-to-air TV, as well as one match per round of finals per competition.”. Also while the Shute Shield has been on FTA I don’t think it’s been free in that I understand the SRU paid to broadcast it until the rights were bought back by RA in February this year. Someone else may understand the technicalities of that better than I but it was a net cost to SRU.

OFFICIAL: Rugby AU locks in new free-to-air broadcast deal as Nine launches Stan Sport

Prez, “In both matches, Head failed to reach double figures in his first innings as the Redbacks collapsed to a below-par total. In each game Head watched as his side conceded massive first innings deficits.”. Maybe if Head scored big in the FIRST INNINGS his team wouldn’t be chasing those big deficits and he wouldn’t have to “compartmentalise his game” so much. It seems a bit odd to be praising the bloke for 2nd innings heroics when he is failing in the first and creating the necessity for those heroics.

Four takeaways from Round 3 of the Sheffield Shield

CPB, I have a recollection of him working in an Abbatoir or as a meat carter but I could be mis-remembering! Harder than nails and even the hammer would go missing rather than hit him.

Canterbury's greatest NRL team

BB, Johns was like Billy Slater before there was a Billy Slater

TB, Bill Noonan, Henry Tatana, Phil Charlton? I loved Peter Kelly too, now there’s a bloke you wouldn’t “step outside” with. Even if you hit him a) he wouldn’t notice and b) you’d break your hand on his head.

Canterbury's greatest NRL team

JA, I think by his being left out he was actually chosen.

Canterbury's greatest NRL team

MR, I agree. If no El Masri Steve Gearin would get a jersey before Brett Dallas, over 100 games and 900 points.

Canterbury's greatest NRL team

DS, too many good centres to have Greg Brentnall in there I feel, even if he is from my home town! Although, TBF half of Canterbury seemed to be from Wagga!
