The teams already dreaming of 2021

By DP Schaefer / Roar Rookie

With the top eight settled for 2020, there are eight other teams for whom dreams of a better 2021 beckon.

It may seem early for this, but as a Dragons supporter living in Melbourne my mind is already drifting to next year.

A brief historic review shows that for the past 15 years at least and possibly longer the top eight changes every year. For this article, we’ll focus on just the past ten to 12 years.

In 2010, a great year when the mighty Red V held the trophy, there were five new faces in the semi-finals. This is rare rather than the norm, and the numbers have been reducing.

In 2011 and 2012 there were four new faces each year, but in the years that followed the number has reduced to the point that, like selection for some national sporting teams, it’s harder to get in than out. Between 2012 and 2020 we have seen only two or three new teams every year, four times on each count.

Representation in finals over the last 12 years has been spread across the 16 clubs:

Obviously are some staple regulars whereas others seem to rarely retain their spot for consecutive years. Two things recent history does tell us is that there will be changes to the top eight in 2021 but that there won’t be many, likely only two or three.

The challenge facing all clubs trying to get in is that they not only need to displace a team above them but they also need to improve ahead of the other seven teams all wanting to get in.

To kick off the debate.

The best teams are those whose game suits the post-COVID and six-again world. They give the ball a bit of air, passing, support and early attack from their own half to pose the biggest dangers to a defence. The teams doing this best at the moment are the Panthers, Roosters and Storm, and it’s no surprise they head the table.

Teams wanting to be near the top need to duplicate this style. Teams playing one-out, predictable patterns are easily defended – for example the Dragons earlier this year and Cowboys, to name just a couple.

Sports opinion delivered daily

The comparison was never more obvious than in the recent Eels-Panthers match in which Parramatta never looked like winning or getting out of their half with one-out plays. Penrith always made ground and always looked dangerous with early and deep passes, bodies in motion and fast ball movement.

Will your team make the eight in 2021?

Gold Coast Titans
This is highly likely because of the way they play, which is similar to the current top three, and their coming personnel. The Titan will have a very competitive pack next year, and with an enthusiastic back, I expect them to be in or on the verge of the eight next year.

Wests Tigers
No. Sorry, Tigers, but you are heading to the bottom four for a year or two, most likely for a new coach in 2022 and a total club rebuild unless they reverse their decision and find a way to keep Benji Marshall. They need to break bread with the Dogs, get them to take Josh Reynolds part sponsored and keep Benji. There is simply nowhere I see tries coming from without Benji or Harry Grant. I have a soft spot for the club, yet I’m concerned about their long-term viability unless they return to the winners circle soon, and they need Benji for that.

New Zealand Warriors
Nope. They have been amazing recently, winning or being highly competitive when they weren’t. I put this down to Todd Payten more than anything else. They have always had a good squad. I also don’t rate Nathan Brown highly, so my prediction would be no change in finish for the Warriors in 2021, just out of eight. With Phil Gould in their corner, they may have better influence with the league and get a better deal from officials. They’ll need that too.

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles
They should and could but need to strengthen their pack after losing Addin Fonua-Blake and need game plans that don’t rely so heavily on Jake Trbojevic. I’d still have some faith in Des Hasler, just some tweaking in the squad and being injury-free.

St George Illawarra Dragons
They could, but with the competition tight it might take them another year. A lot depends on their forward recruits and how Anthony Griffin brings the young backs along. Even if they don’t, they’ll be close and will be a regular 2022 on.

North Queensland Cowboys
They have some very good players and I rate Todd Payten highly, but I don’t think they have enough talent to overtake others into the eight. They’ll be pushing close but just missing for 2021.

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs
Nope. They’ll win the spoon in 2021. Sorry to the decent Doggies fans, but though you have a few players with heart, there are too few pick-ups, too many quality losses and a rookie coach with a poor record. They only clubs who will be going backwards that you could overtake are Tigers and Warriors, so you’ll need to come up with an argument to pass either.

Brisbane Broncos
They’ll head upwards – not enough to make it into the eight a year after their cattle losses, but they’ll push hard and come close. They’ll be there in 2022.

So the Titans and Sea Eagles with maybe the Dragons and Broncos battling for those two or three spots.

Will your team fall out of the eight in 2021?

Penrith Panthers
Young, enthusiastic and in form. Most unlikely.

Melbourne Storm or Sydney Roosters
No way, won’t be happening.

Parramatta Eels
I can’t rule it out, but as long as Mitchell Moses has some form, there is enough strength in the squad to be there. Unlikely they’ll fall out.

Canberra Raiders
It’s been strong a few years running and they’re highly consistent with good talent. They won’t be overrun by any of the challengers.

Newcastle Knights
I can’t rule this one out either. They’re not consistent enough to be sure and there seem to be some cracks in the harmony of the team. They’re in danger.

South Sydney Rabbitohs
I don’t think so. They’ve been underperforming all year, killing themselves with basic errors, and they’ll have a stronger squad next year.

Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks
Yes. The Sharks will definitely not be in the eight next year. Form and cattle as much as statistical history.

So in 2021 out go the Sharks and either (or both) the Knights or the Eels and in come the Titans and one or two of the Sea Eagles, Dragons and Broncos.

So, Roarers, with only two or three changes to the top eight in 2021, who do you think will make it in and who will drop out?

Good article I somehow missed that one. The benefit of bringing on juniors is that they start off cheap & only become expensive once they are established & by then they are committed to the club. I’ve accepted that Norman will be there next year we can only hope Hook limits him to a back up role so Sullivan can get the game time. Amone looks to be the long term replacement for Hunt.

Schiller – that’s him, cheers. Forwards yes and here’s what I ran across with Amone but not much since. https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/dragons-close-door-on-widdop-return-after-signing-gun-half-20200814-p55lu5.html#:~:text=St%20George%20Illawarra%20have%20officially,spot%20no%20later%20than%202022. The fullback is James Schiller I’ve seen some tape of him he looks a similar talent to Ramsey. Don’t know anything about Junior Amone. We need some forwards coming through!

More than enough backs. I would even say, that given there are 4 centres (Williame is last on the pecking order for mine) from what I saw of the Feagai's, I don't think we need another - unless he's like a Josh Morris and into his last year and cheap. I wouldn't want a roadblock for these young guys and I agree, we only need to spend on 2/3 top forwards with some aggression and we'll be around the top 4 for years. We may have to give the young backs a learning year, but kept together this will be a gun backline for a long while. Have you heard of Junior Amone?? Apparently a young gun half with plenty of wraps and there's another good young fullback on the rise.

So far our backs & halves for 2021 are; 7 Hunt & Clune 6 Norman & Sullivan 5&2 Saab, Ravalawa, Ramsey, Pereira & Feagai’s 3&4 Lomax, Feagai’s Williame 1 Ramsey & Dufty a. If Norman is traded we’ll need to pickup a backup 6 from somewhere perhaps Sailor if he’s still unsigned b. My personal opinion is that there’s enough coverage there for us, if anything we could add an experienced Centre for injury coverage but I’d prefer any cap space we have on forwards.

Hi Andrew, sorry I'm slow. Good review of the forwards we need, I'd agree with all your choices but don't expect to see JDB next year. Got to relocate Norman. I'd keep Dufty somewhere, he is setting up the most of our tries. I'd like to keep the juniors coming through so I don't want new backs and happy to wait until 2022 for a serious hit on the comp. Cheers and bring on 2021

The finals will be the goal for the Dragons in 2021. When you consider Penrith have gone from 10th to Minor Premieres in one season you’d have to say anything is possible right? But for the Dragons to win 16 or 17 games to make 7th or 8th a few things need to go their way; - Jack de Belin needs to beat his rape charges & make a successful comeback after a full off-seasons training - Corey Norman needs to be moved on & off the 2021 roster regardless of the cost. The Dragons can’t win enough games with Norman in the side. - Dragons need to obviously recruit well they need; a mobile prop Jack Hetherington is top of my wish list. a quality second rower Joe Ofahengaue looks likely with the club in talks with him. Should this deal fall through John Asiata’s name has also been mentioned a seasoned veteran with a tough edge that can set an example for our younger forwards Josh McGuire is my choice - Ben Hunt needs to return to halfback & play like the player we thought we were getting. With JdB back in the team McInnes returns to 9 & unfortunately Clune misses out. Perhaps Clune might get a chance during the rep season or if Hunt’s form collapses. In any case with Tristan Sailor not retained Clune is a very handy backup. - Cody Ramsey needs to be transitioned to fullback, it’s his best position & he’ll be a more complete player than Dufty. I don’t think we’re a semi final team with Dufty at 1. - James Schiller will begin to emerge in 2021, James is another talented young Fullback so I’d like to see Dufty get a run at 6 in Canterbury Cup. - Finally the Dragons need to get off to a good start to the season, something like 5 from 7 including a win over the chooks on ANZAC Day. We need to get some confidence early & build momentum. If the Dragons are chasing wins late in the season I don’t think we’ll make it. I rate our chances 60/40 in our favour. Hook is only signed for two years so he’ll be looking for success early he can’t afford 2021 to be a throw away otherwise the calls will come to hook Hook.

Good luck to them, I like the Sharks. I just see some problems with loss of key attacking players and some experience + I think Morris will be in undeserved pressure with Flanno around. And as said, the 8 WILL change and not by many, so stats say the Sharks are under pressure.

Warriors looked great, I just put that down to Payten and I don't rate Brown. They should be like Broncos and Melbourne but I'm not sure if I see it.

True, and I actually give Roosters a couple of years before they start finding it hard. They'll lose a lot of talent in 2022 and beyond. Melbourne without Smith... we'll see.

The sharks have the most important thing in football, culture. Yes there weaker than a few years ago but they will be better in 2021. You cant buy culture in 1 year so lets just see how the Titans go. Its been the weakest competition for some time and there hasnt been much player movement due to limited stock and contract timing. So I dont see massive changes in teams next year. In 2022 the sharks will be even better with the release of Dugan, Moylan for starters and I think Johnson might be looking for a new home or taking a pay cut. I have a feeling Andrew Fifita may retire this year or next year. There might not be new faces in the sharks but theres plenty of regulars at Cronulla having only 15 to 30 games first grade games and they will be better for the experience of 2020. Making the 8 is success for some teams and thats about the only thing Cronulla may well achieve.

Yeah, but there is always change HY. I didn't go back past 15 years but if I'd bothered I doubt I'd find any years of the same. I go back a long way and I can't recall any year where the finals were contested by the same group two years running. Someone's got to dip out.

Good content DPS. I dunno. I don’t see much change from this year. At a stretch, and highly speculative, maybe if you believe the propaganda the Titans might reach in. But the Game Day is mightier than the Word. Which raises the question of who might get squeezed out if the Titans jagged it? Maybe the Sharks? But really I’d be talking myself into that scenario. Generally the Titans have been bums, so I’ll stick with that and say the same as this year.

If you go back a few years the Cows and Broncos were considered by many as entrenched in the top 8. The Storm and Chickens keep on rolling on but it's not permanent and the end probably won't be predicted , it will just happen. Form at the end of the season as displayed by teams like the Titans should be a great spring board in to the next season but often it doesn't mean much.
