Scorchers to 'host' BBL final in Canberra

By News / Wire

Perth’s five-day lockdown has forced the city’s Big Bash League club to play their home final in Canberra.

Perth Scorchers, having lost Saturday night’s qualifying final at Manuka Oval, were set to host Thursday night’s semi-final at Optus Stadium.

The Scorchers’ squad were slated to fly out of the nation’s capital on Sunday but those plans changed when news broke of a hotel quarantine worker testing positive for COVID-19.

Cricket Australia (CA), which has largely managed to stay one step ahead of border closures while doing everything possible to ensure players avoid coronavirus hotspots, quickly decided to change its plans.

WA chief health officer Andy Robertson flagged on Sunday that Perth could potentially host the BBL final without a crowd.

But CA, one day after giving the green light for the Scorchers to return home, opted to shift Thursday’s high-stakes clash to Manuka Oval.

BBL boss Alistair Dobson thanked the Scorchers “for their understanding” regarding the shift.

“This has been an unprecedented … BBL season and the ongoing flexibility and cooperation has been vital in getting us to this point of the finals series,” Dobson said.

Perth will play the winner of Sunday night’s elimination final between Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat.

The latest development came after Perth captain Ashton Turner expressed hope that quarantine exemptions could be forthcoming for his team.

If the Scorchers are able to book a rematch against Sydney Sixers then the three-time champions will be required to visit Sydney for Saturday’s SCG final.

WA had eased restrictions on travellers from Victoria and Queensland but anybody coming from NSW is required to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Such arrangements would be a bitter blow for WA and Perth coach Adam Voges, whose charges are scheduled to start their one-day campaign on February 16.

Turner, who is among the group of Scorchers heading to New Zealand after the BBL for Australia’s Twenty20 tour, noted his squad is always hopeful about exemptions.

“That’s a lot of the reason we’re in such strict bubbles at the moment, to give ourselves the best opportunity to get exemptions,” Turner said before Perth’s lockdown announcement.

“Quarantine sucks. There’s no two ways about it, nobody wants to do it.

“We’ve done a couple of stints so far. Some guys have done more than others.

“We had opportunities to win games of cricket and we haven’t been good enough to do that. So we have to bear that (quarantine).”

WA’s squad delayed their departure out of Adelaide after the Sheffield Shield hub earlier this season, waiting for the border to open.

They returned home then were ordered to quarantine because of Adelaide’s COVID-19 outbreak.

I quote: “Another Premier, another stupid decision from incompetent elected officials! “…”we still have state demigods locking doors”… “It attests to the leftwing states inability to train and control its bureaucracy” … “Seriously, I’ll guarantee you leftwing apologists will be patting McGowan on the back for his brilliant management of a crisis” – Your words not mine. My spouse and many other healthcare workers I know have been swamped last year dealing with COVID, and it’s resulting impact on other health conditions. Many have been taking on extra shifts, working in uncomfortable PPE, while also dealing with isolation and quarantining from loved ones. I would be supportive of proposals that relieve this burden. If I felt like generalising to bait and deride I would say some posters are probably the type of person who insists the cashier at ALDI bag their groceries and stand back with their arms crossed, as “it’s their job”. But it’s ok – let’s have the cricket on as that’s more important. See, its fun to generalise isn’t it?

I love it when gross assumptions are made designed to bait and deride and expect an answer, especially as it is already obvious! Gladys having been rebuked by the Federal Government 12 months ago for her bureaucracy’s poor handling of the Ruby learned from that and when there was an outbreak on the Northern beaches, employed contact tracing and closed that specific area. Within a week they were confident they’d sufficiently contained that they had crowds at a Test match with no subsequent outbreak. sounds like effective management. Meanwhile with 12 months of examples and a large country town as a capital Western Australia’s leader won’t have a hit and giggle match because his employees aren’t confident in the processes working elsewhere. Looks more like a leader in election mode than management.

I love it when party politics is brought into a discussion. Wasn't it that avowed communist Gladys who, together with her Health Dept bureaucracy, let the Ruby Princess dock and unload? I'm sure the 600+ resulting deaths were a triviality. Maybe we can accept that complex problems require complex tailored solutions. How would you propose we effectively contact trace someone who has travelled all over metro Perth in 3 days? Pity that doesn't fit in a tweet though. Easier to blame those lefties and their weak desire to preserve human life.

I like your selective reading effort as my statement was ‘it’s stupid not to do everything’. Now who cannot read properly???? This is a funny game!!

Not do anything, who said not do anything? I'm pretty sure I said, 'Identify, contact trace, test, isolate, community and economy moves on. ' . Yet another person not actually reading!

Isn't it interesting that anyone who feels the need to reply, but doesn't have a coherent answer always uses words like fascists and dictators? Who exactly is that sets the tone, trains and oversees a public service to provide the necessary implementation if it isn't the government who designed the policy? We let them choose how, why and when do we? The bureaucracy knew without any instructions from state governments how to contact trace, etc? They'll decide, from some innate knowledge, which groups of people get a vaccine first? Seriously, I'll guarantee you leftwing apologists will be patting McGowan on the back for his brilliant management of a crisis, just Angry Andrews from Victoria. They set the policy, they are responsible for realistic response.

Oh dear, please tell us when you pass your medical degree in virology. The positive case is an Uber driver with the UK variant? The vaccine doesn't cure you and it certainly isn't stopping the spread of community transmission at this time. They are acting on the best science which says act quickly. Wasn't Trump running the train and failing to adhere to stop signs (health advice). Funny how "in ability to train and control its bureaucracy" sound very fascist and the definition of dictator?

Nah- it’s stupid not to do everything possible to avoid spreading a potentially fatal virus. Your comment is based on a philosophy of unattainable liberalism.

Another final for Manuka. There have been some great contests here this season. Hopefully this proves what a great venue this is for future seasons - if and when we return to normality. Should be a great contest on Thursday. The Heat are on a roll and the Thunder have proven to be a very good side this season but need to regroup quickly

The were all a little lucky the Scorchers didn't scrape into top spot - both teams might have been stuck in Perth.

Another Premier, another stupid decision from incompetent elected officials! Twelve months from the first Australian case, nothing learnt! Identify, contact trace, test, isolate, community and economy moves on. Twenty cases in 25,000,000 humans with locked international borders, a vaccine around the corner and we still have state demigods locking doors. It attests to the leftwing states inability to train and control its bureaucracy if they have no confidence in the system which is working in the rest of the country. Inept, insular, incompetent.

Bad luck for the Sixers who would have had to play a team that travelled from Perth a day earlier.
