Where can the mighty Dragons expect to finish this NRL season?

By Paul / Roar Guru

Imagine my indignation when a Roar writer recently had the audacity to suggest my boys, the mighty St George Illawarra Dragons, are going to finish 14th in season 2021.

Not only that, the side that ran dead last in 2020 was going to finish in front of us.

Really?

Once I’d got over the shock, I realised it was probably time to apply some completely unscientific guesswork about where my boys would end after Round 25. This is also known as trying to get the head to rule the heart.

Just to prove I’m leading with my head, I have my boys as no chance to beat the Storm, Raiders or Panthers.

In saying that, I’m almost confident the team can make the finals.

Yes, I know someone decided our best player for the past two seasons was not worth the effort to keep and the same genius (possibly) who managed to let Cam McInnes go to the Sharks was in discussions with Israel Folau.

But Folau’s not coming and McInnes is going next season. So, focusing on now, yep, we’re a chance to make the finals.

This is not so much because the boys are going to turn into overnight superstars but because the bar to make eighth place in the past decade has been set so low.

Over the past ten years, 80 per cent of sides making eighth spot have either had equal win-loss records or lost more games than they won.

The Red V have spent the past two seasons learning how to lose games, so we have that part down pat. The trick is to win 12 games.

That’s where the ‘Hook factor’ comes in.

Anthony Griffin’s a Rockhampton boy. I know a few blokes from that part of the world and they play it hard and straight in the north, which is exactly what Dragons players need right now.

No mucking around with playing guys in different positions every week, Griffin will play them where they’re best suited and if they don’t shape up, he’ll find someone else.

The real Hook factor though is his ability to speak Queenslander, a key element that’s been missing since Ben Hunt and Corey Norman came to the club.

Paul McGregor is a good bloke I’m sure, but he struggled to get his message across to these two. I’m confident a Rockie boy like Hook won’t have the same problems.

Assuming I’m right, we should see a serious improvement in their play, which will translate into wins.

Looking at the Dragons’ draw and the term that best fits is: it sucks.

We’re a chance to win 12 games in the first 19 rounds and one in the last six. That’s because from Round 20 we play Souths, Canberra, Penrith, Easts, North Queensland and Souths again.

If absolutely everything goes right, we might – maybe – sneak into the finals.

But I don’t think so.

Realistically, a pack of teams will fight to decide who finishes from eighth to 13th. These sides, including the Dragons, will have an 11-13 win-loss record, which is a four-win better season than last year and three wins more than 2019.

If the boys can manage 12 wins, they’re a chance to play in the finals where, as the saying goes, anything can happen.

But way too many things have to go right across a long year for that to be a genuine chance of happening.

So I’m guessing the club will finish ninth, much to the annoyance of Tigers fans. We’ll be competitive against premiership contender for long periods, which leaves me with a far better feeling about this year compared to the last few.

Can’t wait for our first game and a win against the Sharks.

I went one step further and had the dragons last in the standings. That was funny when you talked about a roar writer at the start of the article

Bennet at the Knights was a disaster for he was more interested in his love life. I believe that his current wife worked in the front office at the Knights. As for the others, one suspects that people were expecting miracles without progressing through a re-building process. I may also add that in general poor performing clubs have poor performing boards & management structures in place

I agree. Dragons should be in the fight for the finals this year and finish around 9th or 10th. Despite the poor performances they were in a position to make the 8 with 5 games to go in 2020. There should be a few finals spots up for grabs this year. The Sharks and Knights are vulnerable and the emergence of some bottom 8 teams like the Warriors and Titans should ensure more competition. Add to that the return of crowds, raft of coaching and player movements and a year for teams to adjust to the new rules and the gap between the top and bottom should reduce. The Dragons have a lot of talent in the backline and a group of middles around 24-25 years of age like Lawrie, Kerr and Faamausili who should be entering their prime years. Everyone is reportedly hungry and if the halves can improve, which is possible, the likes of Dufty and Lomax have proven they can capitalise. If DeBelin returns in April/May that would also be a huge bonus. I hope for a finals berth this year, but 9th or 10th is probably about right.

Why does news corp keep talking about Brisbane needing a new hooker? No one thinks McCullough was going to be first choice but the Murdoch journos seem be convinced we need to spend that cap space saved from McCullough going to the dragons on a hooker. That is so far from the reality it is not funny. To not know Turpin exists or have just not noticed him when he was running around as one of our few good players is bizarre. I wish McCullough all the best at the Dragons but I am not going to miss him as a player in 2021. Very good in the past but not now. Turpin is great and will be even better this year with the new rules. Just need to be a 80 min player.

McInnes is gone for the season so there's a big minus for the Dragons before the season starts. DeBelin is still hovering over the Dragons like the sword of Damocles. Maybe not fourteenth but I would be surprised if they bettered 12.

I assume McCullough will be feeling more secure now ? Though Billy Brittain might be closer to a spot as well ?

yep, we didn't need that at all. Obviously every team cops injuries but losing arguably the best player in a squad before round 1 will be a real kick in the guts. Hook had a tough job before McInnes' injury, it certainly got a lot harder. In saying that, I look forward to seeing whether the rest of the squad can step up and cover his absence. Equally keen to see what they do about a replacement, given we still have a few squad spots open. Thankfully, I don't think Folau can play hooker.

Looks an even tougher task this season now Paul, with the news McInnes tore his ACL today. Apparently gone for the year !

As the song goes, don't worry be happy, DP. I think we'll get a decent start and be around 3 wins, 3 losses after 6 rounds. We'll likely do a tad better through to round 20 but then I reckon we'll do it tough against the sides likely to be serious contenders this year. If we can get 11 or 12 wins, give our young guys a good grounding in first grade to see how they go AND be competitive with top 4 sides, I'd count that as a "winning" season. Oh yeah and don't be completely distracted by what ever happens with JdeB.

I'm not sure I have a LOT of confidence in Hook, TB, just more a belief that he has to be better than Mary. And a winning percentage of 55 is not the worst, especially when the team's winning percentage in the past 3 seasons has hovered around 35%. As for our finishing spot, certainly outside the top 8 but given how close I think 5 or 6 teams are this year, including your boys and mine, I may well be right or you may well be right, it will be that close come round 25 finishing.
