All four Super Rugby AU teams in action this weekend have made changes to their line-ups for Round 3 of the competition.
Tim Sampson has made the bold decision to move Force captain Ian Prior to the bench to allow Argentinian international Tomas Cubelli into the run-on XV, as well as dropping Jono Lance out of the match-day 23 entirely.
Lance is replaced at flyhalf by Jake McIntyre, while Domingo Miotti comes joins the reserves.
The Force’s Friday-night opponents, the Waratahs, have made just the one change to their squad, with Wallabies prop Angus Bell missing out on selection. He’s been replaced by Chris Talakai, while Tetera Faulkner and Dave Porecki have both been promoted to the starting front row. Tom Horton moves back to the bench.
In the Saturday game, the Brumbies have exchanged one international prop for another, with Scott Sio returning from a back injury to come straight into the starting XV in place of James Slipper. Slipper is out with a knee complaint.
The veteran prop is one of three players missing from the squad which thrashed the Waratahs last week, along with bench lock Nick Frost and backup halfback/winger Isaak Fines-Leleiwasa. They’ve been replaced on the pine by James Tucker and Solomone Kata respectively.
The Rebels’ horror casualty ward has only grown larger after last week’s agonising loss to the Reds. Jordan Uelese is out for three weeks with a broken hand, and fellow front-rower Rhys van Nek is out for around three months with a serious hamstring injury. They join Dane Haylett-Petty, Cameron Orr, Isi Naisarani, Campbell Magnay, Matt Gibbon, Emosi Tuqiri and Jeral Skelton in the list of unavailable Rebels.
There is some good news for the Melbourne outfit, though, with Argentinian signing Lucio Sordoni named for his first appearance for the club on the bench and James Hanson to make his return for the side in the starting side at hooker.
Ross Haylett-Petty has also been added to the side in the second row, while Dave Wessels will wait until closer to kick-off to choosing which two of James Tuttle, Brad Wilkin and Tom Nowlan will get the nod on the bench.

Looking forward to watching the 9 & 10 combo start. Could be a revelation.

I am concerned about the Force. They have put a very good team up but I am concerned that they may be over anxious and impatient. i know they have the experience but I am still concerned. TAH's have nothing to lose and will be a more dangerous team to contain as a result. They will fancy their chances I reckon. I am also concerned that Prior is a great kick at goal and McIntyre may struggle to be as effective. We will see :) Still, Force by 10 for me

I agree

I think Kahui can play 12 ok. TK is a great 13 but in an emergency could cover 12 (not ideal)

Yep Maddocks has had 4 years and 50 games at super level and just hasn`t quite nailed it yet. He may need to go to Canberra as he is only 24 , he will possibly have to play in the local comp until an injury occurs but he will improve down there im sure. He was good 2018- 2019 especially 2019. Seems to have gone downhill in 2020 2021 seasons. His game has been stifled at the tahs. If i was his manager id be calling Dan McKellar asap.

Couldn’t afford him. The offers elsewhere vs what the Tahs could afford to pay on 80% of the cap meant there are a heap of guys Penney wanted to keep but couldn’t.

Because he got more money offered in Japan. He had signed before the Wallaby season.

Jez didn`t Hanigan play lock for the Tahs last year? Why wasn't he kept on ? Why did he leave.? His test career was revived by Rennie then he just leaves. I don't get it.

Good to see Bell dumped out of the 23 ,he needs to work on his scrummaging to be a considered a super rugby player.

It is good, but as you say there are some unexplained absences which is annoying.

Wykesy is a leader. Old man and reached his rather high ceiling playing super rugby. To me he wasn't up to test level but every time I saw him play he was trying his hardest. Ran himself into the ground. And dare I say it highly experienced at this level.

 I've been wondering where the mighty Wykesy is. Surely he should have been given a trot against his old team.

We have locks... bugger me!

On the bench, don't think his work rate has been high enough. That said, I've not been impressed by any of the other locks either.

That was more a function of the Rebels game plan to not do too much though I'd say.

Seriously? He just turned 24.

They publish an injury update on their website every week: https://melbournerebels.rugby/news/2021/03/03/melbourne-rebels-injury-report It doesn't answer all the questions though as there are a number of backline players not listed as injured (Holland, Tonumaipea, Vudogo) who aren't being selected while they're bringing in guys like Ili from out of the squad to fill positions.

If Moeroa was breaking tackles it might have changed that a bit, but even the small guys like Lolesio and Muirhead weren't having any real trouble making their one on one tackles on him.

I like JL, but I did think Jake McIntyre was a step up when he came on in week 1.

And don't that just sum things up presently :unhappy:
