Are Perth Glory finals contenders or pretenders?

By James Renton / Roar Rookie

I’ve been supporting ever since 2012, but this season has been one that I haven’t seen in a very long time.

Obviously with COVID, things were clearly going to be different in terms of recruitment and fixtures, and especially for Perth, with a late start to the season.

When it was announced that Richard Garcia would be managing the club, I was of course surprised but happy that the club chose to go in a different direction than the last three years.

When Tony Popovic was the manager, the first season was a dream come true, but the second was a complete disaster in terms of how Perth played, the performances and some of the decisions from the manager.

I remember watching Garcia’s first press conference in September to try and get an idea on how he wanted Perth Glory to play, and it was music to my ears.

He said the two magic words: attacking football. Having been exposed to dinosaur football in the 2019-20 season, it would be a breath of fresh air to see something different.

The Asian Champions League campaign was always going to be a difficult prospect, considering Perth didn’t have many players and the club were sending for the most part kids from the academy to compete with Asia’s elite. To be fair to Garcia, Perth weren’t that bad.

Clearly coming away from five games with one point from the outside isn’t good, but for the most part, the performances from many players were outstanding, given the fact that the players barely had any pre-season training and the other teams had just finished their season. Performances against Shanghai Shenhua and Ulsan Hyundai did not go unnoticed by the fans, as many were optimistic for the season ahead.

January 20 finally arrived, with the commencement of the Glory’s 2021 A-League season against Adelaide United at HBF Park. That game was sensational, as every single player played with their heart in that match, which resulted in a very comfortable 5-3 win. Young players were tearing the game apart, with Perth’s experienced heads controlling the game. The chemistry within the team was unreal.

What followed was entertaining performances match after match and despite not beating Western United and Melbourne Victory, there was a lot to like about this young Glory side. Young players were given an opportunity, and everyone gave each game a red hot go.

Effort was then rewarded with three wins in a row against Melbourne City, Adelaide United and Brisbane Roar. Glory were finally finding their rhythm. Then came the game against Central Coast on March 2. For some reason, Perth’s fortunes changed. Perth weren’t the same daring, exciting and entertaining attacking side that you would want to see every week.

The players became lethargic, slow, predictable and sloppy, which resulted in one point out of a possible 12. Two humiliating performances against Wellington and Western Sydney both resulted in 3-0 thumpings, and caused a few Glory fans to question the manager. I backed Garcia then, and I continue to back him now despite a 2-0 loss to Macarthur.

So what’s gone wrong? There’s a collection of problems. One of them is Perth’s approach on the ball. From the outside, it looks as though Perth’s possession play is slow and Perth don’t really have a plan aside from giving the ball to Diego Castro and hoping he can create everything. Sure, it does work from time to time, but he’s getting old and that strategy won’t work every week.

Another glaring problem is the defence. Perth have the second worst defence in the competition, and haven’t kept a clean sheet. A potential cause is the fact that Perth rarely have the same back line week in and week out.

Generally it is Darryl Lachman and either Jonathan Aspropotamitis or Luke Bodnar. Perth haven’t really got any consistency down there and it’s showing.

Furthermore, the amount of goals Perth have conceded from switching off and not being organised is a glaring problem. I recall one of the goals Western Sydney scored against Perth, where almost Perth’s entire team was outside the box and they still picked Perth apart with a few clever passes.

Finally, Perth’s attacking play is not the same as it was. For some reason – it could be a confidence issue – Perth’s players don’t want to take on the defender. It’s as if Perth are too scared to. It feels as though Perth would rather go backwards or side to side than take a creative attacking risk to make something happen.

Having said all that, the question is whether Perth are finals or even title contenders, or are they just a bottom-table side? Glory fans in particular will know the answer after Perth’s next five home games in a row. Those games are a great opportunity for Perth to pick up points, as Perth’s home fixtures this season have been where the club has picked up the majority of their points.

A lot can happen in football, so there are obviously reasons to get excited about the Glory, but there are also reasons to be concerned. Time will tell.

Castro is Perths big problem, he is waiting for players to make runs whereas Foranroli wants the ball played into him , the two are incompatible. Castro wants players to rush forward and then he doesn;t want to defend after the ball is lost, those players who get forward then have to run back exhausting them. When they had Chianese and Davidson who were able to cover huge distances this worked, then it was half baked once they lost Davidson they at least had Chianese, now they have no one capable of it. There is no way I can see Perth getting out this, Castro can do the odd thing against the poor defensive teams that keeps him looking good and staying in the team. Perth are better off going to what they had at the start of the season, Fornaroli would hold up the ball while the others ran forward and they would get a lot more bodies into box.

Sage’s company Cyclone Metals is currently suspended from trading on the ASX - and this is at a time where Australian mining companies are supposed to be doing really well. Could Sage finally be about to fall on his sword?

Nick Tana was the best football administrator Australia has even seen. Yes, even better than Frank Lowy. Tony Sage on the other hand is the Aussie version of Mike Ashley.

That is a major problem: our best player is soulless. After his refusal to play finals last year his is dead for me. But instead of getting rid of him, Sage brought back old Keoh, the guy responsible for the salary cap breach (which, officially, sage didn´t know about). In more than 15 years under Sage rein, Glory has been a joke and embarrassment for WA. Tickets in Perth are double the price of any other team and football just had some grace when they breach the rules. Soulless team: loose and dont fight back - leave the pitch full of smiles not giving a s*it. Sage whip about constant financial losses in the club, but when questioned about selling it he says the club worth 30 million. Me and half of WA pray every night for a new foot club in the state

Thank you so much Stuart. Yeah probably a little bit too optimistic to be thinking that they could contend for the A-League, with the defense being a bit of an issue. Castro is definitely the key to us making the finals and if the defense gains a little bit of consistency, then things may turn out for the better.

Well done to one of Perth Glory's most passionate supporters for his first article on the Roar. At the moment, Glory are far more pretender than contender. Aside from the short time under Popovic, defensive lapses have plagued their last decade. Unless that is fixed, Perth can forget about finals this season and with the same folk in charge, next season as well. The only thing that potentially changes that course of events is Castro. A genius at A-League level, he is capable of winning games on his own. Sadly, his defensive unit are wasting much of his good work.

Thanks mate! Well this will be an interesting season for Perth and it already has been, so hopefully they can make the finals. Yes, we were very good back in the NSL days and hopefully in the near future we can carry that success over to the A-League.

Great article, James. The Roar needs more fans to jump onboard, as we readers love a good story. I’ve always been fascinated with Perth. Certainly they can make the finals, but it’s going to take some spirit. Back in the NSL days (before it folded), Glory were Australia’s premier football team. I believe their ongoing success assisted the A-League being conceived.

Yeah we have a few decent players (i.e. Timmins for CM, Bondar for CB and Bramwell for ST) but I feel we still need to recruit more players.

Any good kids coming through the system in key areas ( centre mid, centre back and striker)? Is cook still your 3rd choice keeper?

Yeah fair enough. It's not always easy to back up games scoring 4/5 every week. But players like Castro and Fornaroli have been drying up recently. Investment in younger attackers must be a high priority.

Well to be fair, for the most part of the season we didn't have those three players. Instead we were relying on players like Dane Ingham or Josh Rawlins (players who don't have a lot of A-League experience). I don't think it's fair to blame Garcia when he's had a lot of things go against him, in particular the congested fixtures and the injuries to key players.

He's about 1-2 weeks away from fully recovering from an ACL injury. The club is being very cautious and want him to be 100% before they even think about playing him.

Yeah fair enough. Consistency was always going to be a problem, and having spoken with Richard Garcia, he acknowledges that playing for the majority of the season with young players, there will always be a consistency problem. Am still backing them to make the finals though.

I can see why you would have Glory finishing outside the top 6. Yeah, it will be interesting to see what will happen in the next 2-3 years at Glory in terms of their recruitment, as we are relying on players who are not far away from finishing their careers (i.e. Bruno and Castro). Also agree that the club has to invest in a new GK and CM, ideally people who are young and have a good potential!

After watching the round 1 game, a couple of us predicted that as long as Perth could score 4 or 5 goals a game they will do well this season. The simple reason being that the defence will struggle and consistently leak goals despite the best efforts of Liam Reddy. So far that has proved to be pretty much “on the money”. The attack has been blunted in recent weeks and last night someone produced an anagram of Fornaroli and using seven letters came up with “Forlorn” and that is exactly how he looked for the most part. There is still a heavy reliance on Castro to create some magic and Keogh is ok in fits and starts so maybe more teams are learning how to cope with what looked to be a really potent threat earlier in the year. I hope Chris Ikonomedis recovers as he could make so much difference going forward. The recent acquisition of Guerra should help at the back but it isn’t the complete solution imo.

Since the season started Langkamp, Geria and Ota have come in but that hasn’t resulted in any clean sheets and the attack shown in the first two games is all but gone. Garcia has been the constant in all this.

Does anyone have news about Ikonomidis? It has already been one year injured.
