Let the Broncos rebuild begin!

By Macca / Roar Rookie

The Brisbane Broncos are no longer the Brisbane Broncos of old, who won comp after comp and lured player after player.

Now, as much my rebuild plan is pie in the sky stuff, the Broncos must get back to the top quick.

Brisbane Broncos 2022
1. Cameron Munster (1,300,000)
2. Corey Oates (450K)
3. Herbie Farnworth (300K)
4. Xavier Coates (500K)
5. David Mead (115K)
6. Kotoni Staggs (700K)
7. Daly Cherry-Evans © (1,000,000)
8. Rhys Kennedy (115K)
9. Brandon Smith (700K)
10. Payne Haas (500K)
11. Keegan Hipgrave (115K)
12. Brendan Piakura (400K)
13. John Asiata (115K)

14. Danny Levi (115K)
15. Patrick Carrigan (200K)
16. Josh Papalii (600K)
17. Jordan Riki (250K)

Signings

Daly Cherry-Evans
The big fish the Broncos need to land and according to Paul Kent they’re luring him in.

Manly’s cap is messy with Tom and Jake Trbojevic both on big money and because of this they could part ways with DCE.

Daly signed a multi-million-dollar deal with the Titans in 2015 but later reneged on the deal and only two years ago there were rumours of him signing with the Broncos.

The Maroons captain has not started well this year, but his legacy could be secured by rebuilding the Broncos into a premiership threat.

Cameron Munster
It would be irresponsible for the Broncos to not pick up the phone and inquire about Cameron Munster. A deal worth $6.5 million dollars for five years would get done.

“If another Brisbane team comes in, I won’t say no to going back home,” Munster told News Corp.

“I do see myself moving to Queensland after football and if a second Brisbane team comes in, I could go back earlier than expected.

Why wait? Why let him go to the other Brisbane team when you can go out and sign him yourself. This is a bloke who is currently on $850,000 per year and is off contract at the end of 2022. He has also stated previously that he wants to play his football at fullback.

For him to play for the Broncos he would be the King of Brisbane for financial opportunities and set up for life.

Dave Donaghy, you have a previous relationship with Munster: get the deal done.

Josh Papalii
Josh Papalii for the last two years has been considered the best front rower in the world and, as an Ipswich kid, he has previously been reported as wanting to go back to Queensland.

So Brisbane should get on the front foot and sign him. He still has at least three good years left.

Brandon Smith
Brandon Smith once again been rumored to sign with the Broncos and Kevin Walters has publicly stated that he is interested in the ‘Cheese’. He is currently stuck behind Harry Grant as the hooker at the Storm and the Broncos are crying out for a solid number 9.

His salary is fitting, $700,000 is the going rate for an international hooker and for the Broncos to rebuild they need a bloke like Smith.

Keegan Hipgrave
A former Bronco, Hipgrave signed with the Eels at the end of last season from the Titans but is not starting consistently at Parramatta, and the Broncos need a player like him.

Hipgrave has grit and grunt and would change the way Brisbane play.

Anthony Milford (Manly)
It’s safe to say Milford will no longer be a Bronco past 2021 and at this point that it is hard to find a club will sign him.

In saying that, Milford was linked to two Sydney clubs and even though the report did not state the exact clubs, Des Hasler has a knack of pulling players out of the doldrums and pulling them into line.

If he does go to Manly it would be as a bench utility. He will not command a million dollars a season. probably $300,000, but Hasler may be make this stone into a diamond.

Matt Lodge (Penrith)
The Penrith junior who is on a reported salary of $700,000 a year is on the chopping block. Brisbane will have to chew some of his salary but there is a lot of upside for the Panthers if they sign Lodge on $500,000.

Thomas Flegler (Cowboys)
Flegler has not lived up to the hype which was created before he debuted and the banana farmer from Tully looks set to have to find another club.

The Cowboys were interested in him before he signed with the Broncos, and Todd Payten has publicly stated they’re looking for another middle forward to bolster their pack.

Tevita Pangai Jr (Roosters)
Pangai was rumored in 2019 to be signing with Chooks, so much so he was reportedly offered dinner at Trent Robinson’s house. Even last year, he was reportedly calling other clubs about a possible release (one being the Roosters).

The shoe might be on the other foot this time, with the Broncos maybe looking for Tevita to go elsewhere and the Roosters are the perfect club.

Jamayne Isaako (?)
I don’t believe Jamayne Issako is the future of the club, he’s not a fullback nor an A-grade winger. The Cronulla junior may find his way back there or play rugby in his homeland.

Brodie Croft (Super League)
I cannot see another club needing his services. Off to England for Brodie.

Jake Turpin (Bulldogs)
Turpin is solid but like Tom Dearden, the Broncos don’t need to experiment with the experienced.

The Bulldogs need a hooker like Turpin who is able to bust his gut for 80 minutes. Linked to the Dogs back in 2019, he will stroll into their 9 jersey.

Tesi Niu (Titans)
Niu has loads of potential but he has defensive lapses in him and is better suited at the Titans, where he was rumored to be heading in 2020 as a package deal with David Fifita.

The rest
Jesse Arthars (Super League or ISC)
Keenan Palasia (Super League or ISC)
Cory Paix (Super League or ISC)
Richie Kennar (Super League or ISC)
Tyson Gamble (Super League or ISC)
Ethan Bullemor?)
Kobe Hetherington (Super League or ISC)
Alex Glenn (retire)

I don't think Munster would be interested in leaving a successful club to go to the basket case the once mighty Broncos have become

Didn't Munster sign a long term deal and why would put him as fullback. I would be chasing someone like Kalyan ponga. The team list is not realistic.

I think you know yourself this is really no chance of happening. The only rumours circulating about either Munster or DCE are extremely airy and the small concrete details that exist only specify the new Brisbane team. The two clearly want to only associate themselves with a clean slate rather than the existing basket case of a franchise that the Broncos are currently. I also think your valuations of players are a bit off. Carrigan at only 200k? I mean he's been off the boil a bit this year, but he was captain last year. He got called into the Qld origin squad. Clearly he's better than a tick over minimum wage. Asiata isn't even close to minimum wage either. He literally moved to the Broncos for more money. He's currently on twice that at least. And Haas for 500k? At his level? He'd need to find a new manager if the Broncos gave him that deal. That's a downgrade on what he currently earns and he clearly deserves more than what he's at now.

Seriously, I think if you put that list, in that order in front of any FG coach and said "here's your lineup" their first instinct would be to check the calendar to see if it was April 1. Macca, are you a current member of the Bronco's board?

I understand it’s a wishful thinking squad Macca but it wouldn’t matter how good the spine is if your selected outside backs stay in the team. Oates, Coates, Mead & Farnworth all have no idea how to defend under the current rules, both wingers rush in, both centres are indecisive so DCE & Munster would be forever trying to put out fires. Coates & Farnworth are young & worth persevering with but Mead is just there as a Covid 19 safe harbour & Oates (his poor read lost the GF) is there because he married Geno’s daughter. The broncos recruitment of Qld talent has gone down hill since Cyril Connell passed away, he had that statewide network of high school coaches through his role at Education Qld. Nowadays they put every kid on scholarships, give them little attention & wonder why they go elsewhere. The saying ‘sort the wheat from the chaff’ doesn’t apply at the broncos any more. Connell got to know the families & had the nous to identify the more coachable kids. The more recent guys just threw out the nets & hoped for the odd red emperor amongst a load of mullet & carp.

Ok mate I don't know if you know but we do develop. In fact the best we develop Walsh, Walker, Fifita, Arrow, Hunt, Nikorima, Wallace etc. Our problem is attracting outside players. You can attract players by signing Munster and DCE

The salary cap & draft systems in various codes are designed to create as close to a level playing field as possible. In a perfect world all clubs should be competitive however other factors I.e. mismanagement, poor recruiting & retention processes can nullify the evenness of a competition. I’m sure the term “rebuild” wasn’t in the sporting vocabulary back when I first started following the game. A cynic may think it’s an excuse if a club doesn’t perform for a season or two however do members, fans & sponsors have the patience to wait until the perceived rebuild is complete without losing interest?

Titans shameful? Well, here’s some stats for you- of the starting 13 this week, 6 players came through our system as juniors and 11 are SEQ/Northern Rivers kids (our catchment). If you’re talking about recently signed team, well think if it as the tables being turned after decades of other clubs raiding Gold Coast talent. The vast majority of the signings are about bringing Queenslanders (and Northern Rivers) talent home as stated by the club as a core principle. Also, dig into what the Titans are doing (and gave been since 2018) around junior development, and you can see you’ve had a huge miss on this line!

This article highliigts why people who don't suport the Broncs cheer for any team that plays them. The arogance to asume that because the Broncs don't want a player some other team will be glad to take them because they were a Bronco. You had better start to realise that the days of waving a flag & offering a player unders to play for you are gone, get in line, get off your throne & your horse & enter the real player market. I would hope that all the other make offers to the players that you want to keep & make you use more of your brown paper bag money. oldcowboy

Apologies if i am wrong in that. i always understood that they had an active and successful junior development program. that might not be correct - pretty certain about the other three clubs though.

I started reading the article and came to the line "according to Paul Kent they're luring him in." If you take serious notice of Kent and any of his News LTD mates then you would believe anything. They are gossip, scandal mongers with the credibility of a gumboot. Some wishful thinking in that team, nevertheless.
