The AFL has officially denied Port Adelaide's prison bars jersey request

Port Adelaide’s request to wear their historical ‘prison bars’ kit has been rejected by the AFL.

The Power wanted to wear the black-and-white striped guernsey in their two matches against city rivals Adelaide this season.

But the AFL has cited an almost 25-year-old edict in denying the request.

When Port entered the AFL in 1997 they were prevented from using the prison bars jumper, worn by the club in the SANFL, amid opposition from Collingwood who maintain the design is too similar to their own guernsey.

But last year, the AFL, Port and Collingwood agreed the Power, in their 150th year, could wear the prison bars jumper in a one-off match against the Crows.

“That agreement, signed by all parties, stipulated the guernsey was specifically approved for Port Adelaide’s use only for that single match in 2020,” the AFL said in a statement on Thursday.

“And Collingwood’s approval did not bind it with respect to any other future proposals … in respect of the guernsey.

“Collingwood … has made it clear that, at this time, it does not agree to further use of the guernsey by PAFC.

“On that basis, and consistent with the arrangements that have applied to all previous instances of use of the prison bar guernsey by Port Adelaide since the club joined the AFL (i.e. with the approval of the AFL and Collingwood) the AFL does not grant permission for the guernsey to be worn.”

The AFL is a joke Mark, I get that. West Coast was forced to play numerous "home" finals in Melbourne, the last of which was Essendon in the late 90's, all because the AFL didn't have the integrity to just compensate the MCC for the missed MCG final, to let West Coast (rightfully) play their home final in Perth. (and I actually support Essendon!)

One could easily Make the argument that the contract was unconscionable, Eddie (and clearly the AFL as well) having knowledge pertaining directly to the key term of the contract that was not made known to PAFC could be deemed as being directly misleading one party or brings into question the key convenient of all contracts 'good faith'.

G'day Micko ,there was an agreement to give the interstate teams more access to the MCG for screwing them over MCG GF deal! The AFL has no integrity when it comes to honouring agreements !

Picking and choosing tradition.??? Hmmm ,like the AFL picking and choosing Collingwood and Essendon as the 'traditional' teams to play on anzac day . The AFL needs to be completely severed from Victoria ! If you after tradition, how about the AFL's tradition of running a protection racket for the former vfl teams. Case in point would be the AFL have a tradition of protecting Collingwood from traveling to Tassie and Geelong . There's your tradition

Maybe they could get that material where some people couldn't agree on the colour. To Port fans the bars appear White and to Pies fans it appears Teal.

Wear the black prison bars on their blue. Nobody can argue that there's a clash....

Quoted by Matthew Richardson. We have never seen or have any knowledge of anything which suggests we are not allowed to wear the guernsey in games of heritage significance … and yes we have spoken with each CEO and President of the Port Adelaide Football Club since 1990

1. Because Port agreed NOT to! 2. I'm a neutral too (believe it or not) 3. Collingwood changed to majority black specifically because of North (ironically it was Geelong playing Collingwood that did my head in in the 90s!) 4. North actually had to change their jersey to join the VFL (now "AFL") because they clashed with Carlton...so a precedent had been set.

Just don't see how there is an issue in regards to wearing a heritage Guernsey once a year in a game that doesn't include Collingwood. I'm a neutral so I don't have a foot in either camp, but to me it's just a non issue if more than one team has a similar jumper. You could argue Norths home jumper is more similar to Collingwoods in terms of the design than the prison bars of Port anyway...

Common sense approach would be for Port to wear whatever they like and when they play Collingwood, the winning team gets to pick the jersey for the next match. This stays until the other team wins. Eddie has been cancelled now, so there is nothing stopping it.

Why in Showdowns? The prison bars jumper has elevated significance for Port Adelaide and our people, so we believe using it as a special purpose guernsey for heritage reasons is the perfect solution. The Showdown has deep historical significance to South Australian football and our heritage prison bar guernsey is synonymous to Port Adelaide and SA football. The Showdowns bring to the AFL a rivalry whose origins date back long before 1997.

What sense of entitlement. Its a request to wear a jumper we wore as a club for 120 years put of a 150. The jumper we wore when we were approached by the the AFL as an established football club to come and join in the national competition. Its not that much to ask to pau respect to your heritage especially when it was that heritage that lead to you joining the national competition.

Years of Victorian arrogance informs my view. No state hates another state like SA does Victoria. ----- My issue is that Collingwood could for one game a year, in SA, not affecting Victorians let them wear it. It appears Victoria is trying to culturally misappropriate that that has nothing to do with them. SA is the most parochial state. We don't have much but we defend it.

Absolutely agreed there! But this still doesn't alter the scenario regarding PA: who agreed not to wear the SANFL strip in the AFL, unless given specific permission.

Doesn't matter, it's a common sense approach.. there are only so many colours in the rainbow. Teams are going to have colour clashes.. they all must have a legitimate clash Guernsey.
