NRL Round 9 teams: New backline for Bunnies, still no Suaalii for Roosters

By The Roar / Editor

The NRL Round 9 teams have been revealed, with South Sydney naming a new-look backline ahead of Thursday night’s blockbuster against Melbourne.

Injuries to Adam Reynolds (thumb), Jaxson Paulo (wrist) and Campbell Graham (hand) have forced the Rabbitohs – already sorely missing the suspended Latrell Mitchell – into a complete reshuffle.

Steven Marsters and Taane Milne will line up on the wings, Braidon Burns will join Dane Gagai in the centres, Cody Walker moves back to five-eighth and Benji Marshall gets the starting halfback job against the Storm.

Meanwhile, hopes of a surprise Joseph Suaalii debut for the Roosters have been dashed, with the schoolboy sensation again named amongst the reserves.

Come on MJ, don't bring that sorts of theatrics as an examples into this, as that is absolutely ridiculous and not the case here. Benji was obstructed and the rules were applied, I've seen worse and softer obstruction rulings in the NRL that stopped unbelievable and spectacular tries, these are the rule and part of the course.

I never said the rule wasn't applied correctly. It was. Just as it is when a soccer player is slightly clipped by a defender, then rolls on the ground until the ref points to the penalty spot.

That is NOT THE POINT here MJ, rules are rules irrespective of what you obscurely think and make Benji out to be? If you don’t get a fair dinkum chance at a tackle and you are obstructed especially when that player scores a try, then we might as well play apply the NFL rules and be done with it.

No he didn't Joey, have a look at it again! Benji initially went to his left thinking that Wighton will sidestep that way but Wighton stepped to Benji's right (you can see Benji going to his left then right) and that is where the obstruction was, if Wighton would have gone to Benji's left there would have been NO obstruction and Benji would have had a fair go at a tackle, as Benji said, that its irrelevant if he would have made a stoppable tackle or not and stopped Wighton but, that is not the point here, the rules are clear on obstructions and this was a clear example of why the NRL has an "Obstruction Rule", simple.

It certainly was a joke. A defender making no attempt to get to the ball carrier, instead pretending he couldn't get past an opponent who was barely in the way. Even my souths mates admit he milked it. But I don't blame Benji. He was no chance of stopping Wighton so he took advantage of a rule that he knew would be strictly applied and result in a penalty for his team. So good luck to him, but he has to expect a bit of a ribbing.

They have had the roster to cover but I’m not sure it will stretch much further.

Benji has no eyes for the ball carrier, only his own choice to move towards the decoy runner. Can’t really be obstruction if he makes no attempt to get to the ball carrier. Not like the decoy runner was giving him a big bear hug. Pretty lucky to get called an obstruction, and with so much about it, it won’t get called the same next time.

Is that suppose to be a joke MJ? As you mustn't know the rules, read up on them sometime.

Makes a nonsense of the refs call of milking in the play-the-ball. They are obviously are against milking in the general. Refs need to wise up and call out this kind of play. Hey video ref - whichever one, doesn’t matter who, just once from now on in, call that kind of play out as milking, and award a try. The bunker would win back the support of fans far and wide in an instant.

Also can’t go wrong getting green lights each time they drop a ball over the try line.

Roosters must be counting on easing Suaalii in on an easier game then. Just that at their rate of injury per game, and Origin coming up, they may not have too many easy games for the rest of the season. Best to throw him in asap. I think it only gets harder for them from here on.

Except with those acting skills, he would be lip synching.

Papalii dropped didn't help either. No go forward without the big man.

As long as he continues to hide behind opponents and gain obstruction penalties, Souths will be fine. :stoked:

I tried responding earlier Albo but my comments seemed to disappear. A few players are getting dropped and supporters keep wondering why. Ricky is obviously looking for a response but its not quite happening. I thought they were better last week against Souths and a bit unlucky in the final 20. The place is a bit of a mess at the moment - players and wives are upset - and its getting played out in the media which is a bit concerning - some senior players are getting their noses out of joint. But they need to harden up and tough this out. A couple of wins would help. Getting away to Wagga might be good for the squad. They should drop in to the Jugiong pub on the way home for a team bonding session, a parmie schnitzel and a few pints of Kosciusko pale ale. Hopefully after a win.

Koroisau and Edwards have been missing for much of the season so far but the Panthers continue to perform. Confidence is a wonderful thing. And we should give credit to the Roosters who have been smashed by injuries but continue to find ways to win. The top 5 have been superb.

I'm waiting to hear from Mrs Ryan James ! What the hell did Ryan do wrong to go from starting prop , getting only 23 minutes game time , to completely dropped the next week ? What is going on down there ? Is he injured ? He looked their best forward early last week .

One thing that a lot of GF winners have in common is a low injury rate throughout the year

That Panthers side continues to chug along with minimal injuries to key players as their main competitors fall apart around them.
