Pro14, South African rugby clubs form United Rugby Championship

By News / Wire

Sixteen clubs from the northern and southern hemispheres will compete in a new United Rugby Championship next season.

Plans have been unveiled for a new United Rugby Championship next season, featuring northern and southern hemisphere teams.

The 16-team league, forged from an agreement between PRO14 Rugby and SA Rugby, will start in September.

It will comprise South Africa’s four Super Rugby sides – Sharks, Stormers, Lions and Bulls – along with current PRO14 combinations Cardiff, Ospreys, Scarlets, Dragons, Leinster, Munster, Ulster, Connacht, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Benetton and Zebre.

For the first time, and subject to contract terms being finalised with European Professional Club Rugby, South African teams will be eligible to play in the Heineken Champions Cup from season 2022-23.

URC chief executive Martin Anayi claimed the new league would “begin to reshape the world of club rugby,” while SA Rugby boss Jurie Roux described it as “a watershed moment in South African rugby history”.

The competition format comprises four regional pools of four, with teams playing each other home and away in their group, plus one fixture against each of the other 12 sides.

The top eight teams in a single table after those 18 regular season encounters will then enter a straight knockout phase, culminating in a grand final.

All points won during the URC season will contribute to rankings in the regional pools, and the highest-ranked team in each of the four groups will earn a Champions Cup place for the following season.

The remaining four allocated Champions Cup spots will go to the four highest-placed league teams that have not already qualified through their regional pools.

“Fans have always asked more of our league, and now we are taking it to new heights,” Anayi said.

“Forming the United Rugby Championship will begin to reshape the world of club rugby.”

SA Rugby chief executive Roux added: “Our teams will be pitting themselves against the leading clubs from four nations, steeped in rugby tradition and folklore.

“They will do it without having to cross time zones or acclimatise, while 100 per cent of matches will kick off in South African prime time.”

all airlines have taken a bath over the last year and will continue to hemorage money for ages. travelling from S.A. to europe and back will be a big cost. all of the european teams will immediatley face a huge increase in travel and associated costs. dont know whether this will be much more sustainable than super rugby was.

Was not thinking along those lines TWAS. Only H&A against all teams is "fair" in my opinion. Having said that though, it is only "unfair" on the order of also rans, typically the teams ranked 7 and 8 on the table. By and large the best four teams were in the semis, best two in the final etc. The biggest inequity in these competitions is the disadvantage of being a contender but playing away from home. One Kiwi team (i think) had to fly to SA, won, and fly back to NZ for the next game. I was mainly talking about the financial metrics where the "tribalism" (surely the most over used word in sports administration) of conferences would be a boon to attendances and TV ratings.

You have never presented any proof for the claim that "About half live and play in NZ”, and obviously, you never will hence it is another blatant lie. And it is pretty obvious that my ability to understand English is superior to yours, but here is some news for you: that doesn't mean that all Swedes are better at English than people from English-speaking countries, it only means that I am better than you. In general, pretty much all Kiwis I know have much greater English skills than me. And they are honest and humble men too.

Haha enjoy your neutral day...if proof ain't enough then I give up. Yeah of course you swedes are better at English than us English speaking people...hahahahaha

Psycho, that you lack basic knowledge in the English language and can't even understand what you written yourself is pretty sad to see but not really my problem. But it is pretty amazing that you can't even understand what your claim "Where do you think the PI test teams mainly come from? About half live and play in NZ”. means. You clearly state that about half of the PI Test team players live and play in NZ. And that is a blatant lie. You are a dishonest man with a poor attitude. It has been proven over and over again. The big problem is that you believe your feelings are facts. Real facts, you probably don't know what it is.

Neutral 15 of a squad of 32 is "ABOUT half...SORRY its actually only 47%... Does Sweden not teach basic maths. SO...That makes me correct and my maths correct...Goose!!! but I do dislike dishonest men like you – regardless of where they come from. Gees you must hate yourself then. Particully when you accuse me of being a liar and I prove my facts. Im on here enjoying discussions about MY country and OTHER countries playing rugby. You dont even come from a country that plays pro rugby yet you come on and prove your hatred for everything NZ and everything ABs.....WHY????? Enjoy your day Psycho!!!! Liar!!! Dishonest!!! BS artist etc etc etc...

NV, even those Top 14 clubs have made big losses overall over the years of professionalism, and goodness knows whether they will ever make an actual return on investment. Meanwhile other Top 14 clubs are in big trouble. You also have to take into account that they are massively reliant on a single customer, Canal+, which seems willing and able to continue, but it's a risk. The other thing is, apart from massive help from local government, even the French clubs are subsidised by the FFR, paid for by, that's right international rugby.

JD, to my knowledge there are several French clubs that have a very healthy economy. I think you are confusing things by constantly painting all Euro clubs with the same color. It is English Premiership clubs (bar Exeter) that have poor business models and is propped up by their owners, not the French (there are exceptions but they are few). French club rugby is actually pretty healthy with over 40 professional teams.

I really respect your “intellectual honesty” and I do apologize for an unnecessary dig at you before. Clearly I was wrong about you. Hopefully, we will see two Pasifika teams in SR next year which is a great first step. Giving the PIs a proper helping hand is long over due, I think we all agree on that. And I also hope this is just the beginning of a long term plan – from NZR, RA, and Word Rugby – to really work hard to strengthen PI rugby on all levels.

You are correct here me Sweed. Most do not play their game in NZ. However they do get their start there. They are NZ born to Tongan or Samoan families who dream of being ABs. When they don’t get the offer from the mighty ABs they take the next offer which is the county of their family. Once they make this decision most if not all are pushed aside by the super franchises (as they are no longer AB potential) and head to Europe or Japan to make a living. They are highly sort after as they are obviously super rugby quality players and as the PI teams don’t get much action as teams outside of world cups they don’t have to release them as often as other internationals. Watch the Fijians who play in Super Rugby AU head OS either next year or the year after as the Aussie sides will want to focus on developing Aussie talent.

You gotta be really unlucky every time you are thinking, Psycho. You claimed half of the player's lives and plays in NZ. Here is a direct quote from you: "Where do you think the PI test teams mainly come from? About half live and play in NZ". The fact is if one is a professional rugby player who wants to represent a PI nation at Test level, the options to make a living in NZ are close to zero. And again, I don't hate NZ (quite the opposite), but I do dislike dishonest men like you - regardless of where they come from.
