Fiji knock pointless Australia out of Rugby 7s, and Argentina stun South Africa

By The Roar / Editor

Fiji – the reigning men’s Rugby 7s gold medallists – outclassed Australia 19-0 to knock the Aussies out at the quarterfinal stage.

Fiji, playing without NRL star Semi Radradra, still had enough, and were helped by a bad blunder from Lachie Anderson who spilled the ball over the line after being set up by Maurice Longbottom.

They were 7-0 down at the time and Fiji were clinical in shutting out the game in the second half, scoring two tries in quick succession to end Australia’s tournament.

Australia only made it into the quarters on points differential after losing to Argentina and New Zealand.

While Australia’s loss was expected, Argentina made the semis with a stunning win over South Africa.

Argentina played most of the match with six players, after Gaston Revol was red carded in the third minute.

Argentina held on for a famous 19-14 victory despite being reduced to five players by a late yellow card.

I'm just watching the final, someone should tell these blokes how to run into space. They stand there waiting for the pass instead running some angles.

He was a member recently since 2019. Not sure why Rodney is not playing, he was certainly signed up to be part of the Olympics squad. Is this the best Australia side on offer? it probably is, I cant think of anyone else that could fit in a Sevens environment this year. It is a total different game to the 15s. Apart from Kerevi, Walsh picked the best he had. I think he needs to go back to the drawing board and work out what type of team he wants. All the top teams in the world: GB (Eng), NZ, Fiji, SAfrica, Argentina, USA have distinct players and styles. Australia unfortunately has been behind the 8-ball for some years now. I have really been watching the 7s rugby circuit since 2009 and Australia has never really been that good or that consistent. The women's team on the other hand, are always a threat and Walsh did some really good work with them while he was their coach, he looked outside the box when he came to picking players. He needs to review the men's team again after this Olympics and start rebuilding. He can't rely on just a few good players like Longbottom, Malouf, and Pietsch. Hutchison needs space, he was a really good flyer when he first came on the scene. He is very ineffective now. What has happened to his speed? Walsh does not have to replace his whole team, but he needs to look at the balance of it. It is not right at the moment.

Well fought lads. I thought they played really well but just a few simple mistakes cost them against Argentina, NZ, and Fiji. They will be gutted I reckon because they were in with a chance and all those games.

Ahhh we choked against darkness, and to go down to Fiji like we did, gees. It’s been a long long time between drinks, not sure where our men’s 7 stocks lie whilst our women’s game is still on the rise. Big SAMU K was good and playing 7 s hopefully will strengthen his game.

I see no reason why this isn't our future in 15s either.

No I don’t think it is. Walsh went with a squad he knows and trusts because most of the new guys in the setup haven’t had any time on the 7s circuit. So he decided to play it safe. Sadly it didn’t pay off. His biggest positive was Kerevi who was the only risk he took with his selection.

I thought Rod Davies was once upon a time in the Sevens squad . Is this the best Australia can offer?

Anyone tell me how I can watch a replay of Argentina v South Africa? Talk about a David v Goliath match. this will go down in history as one of the great epics in Olympic history.

They look so ponderous compared to other teams. Very disappointing. I hope the women get it together.

They’ll need to pick up their form if they want to get past the quarterfinals.
